! 10/13: Start of my research projects at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA.
Practical experience prior to my specialization in ENT: From 2003 to 2012, I often worked in my father’s doctor’s office. In 2004, I performed a voluntary traineeship for four weeks in the department of
internal medicine at the hospital St. Johann in Tirol, Austria. In 2007, I did a medical training for three weeks in the department of trauma surgery
at the hospital St. Johann in Tirol, Austria. In 2008, I performed a medical training for four weeks in the department of internal
medicine at the Singapore General Hospital, National University of Singapore. I worked as a tutor for students in their second semester at the division of
biochemistry at Innsbruck Medical University in spring 2009. In summer 2009, I performed a medical training for four weeks in the department of
neurology at Concord Clinical School, University of Sydney, Australia. From September 2009 until June 2010, I spent a year in Paris, France with the
ERASMUS programme (student exchange between countries of the European Union), where I worked in different hospitals for at least six hours every day next to my courses – amongst others: Pitié-Salpêtrière, Val-de-Grâce, American Hospital, Hôtel-Dieu, Necker, Lariboisière, Cochin, Saint-Vincent de Paul...
Additionally, I wrote an article on “Correlation between HPV and HNSCC: should boys in the European Union be included in HPV vaccination?” at the department of otolaryngology at the Institut Curie (Service de chirurgie cervico-faciale et ORL).
From August 2010 until November 2010, for the first part of my final practical year, I
worked for three months in the department of internal medicine (one month each in the ward of internal medicine, the ward of infectious medicine, and consultations in internal medicine) at the Hospital Universitario de la Princesa, Autonomous University of Madrid (“Universidad Autónoma de Madrid”), Spain.
From November 2010 until February 2011, I performed a medical training for eight
weeks in general surgery at the Charité - Campus Virchow Klinikum (CVK) in Berlin, Germany.
In February / March 2011, I performed a medical training for four weeks in the
department of otolaryngology (ENT) at Innsbruck Medical University. In March / April 2011, I worked for four weeks in general medicine at the
“Ambulatorium und Praxiszentrum Augarten/Ordination Dr. Molnár” in Vienna, Austria.
In April 2011, I performed an elective for four weeks in research ophthalmology at the
Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, USA. During this stay, it was possible for me to work on five different papers with foci on dry eye disease, tear
osmolarity, and omega-3 fatty acids in relation to ophthalmologic problems and to get an insight into clinical and operative procedures as well.
In May / June 2011, I went for four weeks to Heidelberg, Germany, to gain
experience in the field of anesthesiology at the local University Clinic. In September 2011, I was one out of 50 students from other universities per year who
were given the opportunity to go to the University of Oxford, UK for a clinical rotation. During the four weeks there, I worked in the department of otolaryngology (ENT) at the John Radcliffe hospital and wrote an article on the “Effects of postpartum administration of valganciclovir on infantile hearing loss after in utero infection with the human cytomegalovirus (HCMV)“ under the supervision of Mr. James Ramsden, BA, BM BCh, FRCS, PhD.
In October 2011, I performed an elective in orthopedic surgery for four weeks at the
University Hospital in New Orleans, USA. This exchange was organized by the Austrian Medical Students’ Association (AMSA), which ranks students every year to assign placement. In this competitive program, I was the only Austrian medical student that received a place in the USA during this academic year.
In November 2011, I organized a research rotation at the Massachusetts Eye and
Ear Infirmary in Boston, USA, the primary teaching and research facility for otolaryngology and ophthalmology for Harvard Medical School. There I worked for four weeks with Michael S. Cohen, MD, from the department of otolaryngology (ENT) on projects concerning auditory neuropathy, familial congenital cholesteatoma, and enlarged vestibular aqueducts. I also attended clinical and operative procedures.

Trainee Member of the American Neurotology Society (ANS) since 2016 Language skills: My mother tongue is German. In addition, I have knowledge of several other foreign
languages:
I started to learn English in 1995 and was taught the language for 10 years at school. I passed the CAE (= Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English) in 2004 with the grade B, the TOEFL iBT (= Test Of English as a Foreign Language internet-Based Test) in 2010 with 114 out of 120 points, and the IELTS (= International English Language Testing System) in 2011 with 8.0 out of 9.0 points. Furthermore, I’ve traveled to various English-speaking countries including four times to the US and several times the UK to spend language holidays there. I’ve also passed the course “English for Clinical Purposes” / ”Hospital English for Clinicians”, which is the highest certificate concerning Medical English skills available at the Medical University Innsbruck and where I acquired “a very good command of the language skills required for working in a clinical setting”. My medical trainings in Singapore, Sydney, New York, Oxford, New Orleans, and Boston have helped me to enhance my English as well.
I also studied French for six years at school and participated in a language exchange
for two weeks during that time. I went to Paris in 2006 to practice French again and in 2008 I studied French at the University of Innsbruck for one semester (level C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Of course, my stay in Paris with the ERASMUS program ameliorated my language skills tremendously.
I learned Latin for four years at school, which helps me now in studying medicine. Furthermore, I studied Spanish at the University of Innsbruck beginning in 2007 for
three semesters (level B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), and I’ve been to Spain several times to practice the language. I made huge progress concerning my knowledge of this language during my working experience in Madrid and also while staying Barcelona for a month in June / July 2011.
Hobbies: Football, snowboarding, golf, sailing, scuba diving, reading, music, running
(successful participation in the 2018 Boston Marathon after raising $8000 for hearing research)
