A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR It is both an honor and a privilege to serve as the Director here at the Cuyahoga Valley Art Center during the rejuvenation of Front Street. The role has provided me with an opportunity to lead this energetic and passionate organization at a time when there is so much potential for modernization and growth.

I would like to personally thank our membership and students for their continued patronage of our art center during the redevelopment of our surrounding landscape. The walking path that once adorned the front of our building has officially been transformed into a beautiful two-way street that is now open. Street parking is available and the construction in our three parking decks is close to being completed. We are fortunate here at CVAC

for all of the free parking at our disposal thanks to the generosity of the City of Cuyahoga Falls. The city of Cuyahoga Falls has planned the official celebration for the opening of Front Street for June 2nd.

2017 marked our 30th year of dedication to the artistic development of our membership, students and the local community in this building. With the help of our Board of Directors and the generosity of CVAC’s Women’s Auxiliary were been able to update and repair the roof and our north-facing wall. Now, our attention has been pulled inward as we complete our updates to the lower level of our building. We thank you for your patience as we strive to improve our space for our members, students and the community.

With accessibility restored to our front doors, we are now ready to welcome the community in to see all that CVAC has to offer. Stay tuned for some fun and exciting changes this 2018 calendar year as we begin to modernize CVAC’s image to keep up with our exponential levels of growth.

Thank you again for your continued patronage of the Cuyahoga Valley Art Center.

Danielle DieterichDIRECTOR, CUYAHOGA VALLEY ART CENTER

SPECIAL THANKS!We would like to extend a special thanks to everyone who attended our Annual Member Holiday Dinner. Our holiday spirit shined bright as CVAC members celebrated the art centers growth and toasted to the new year during this exclusive event.

SNOW SHOW EXHIBITIONCVAC provided the community with an insider’s look into the amazing art that our participating artists created during these chilly winter months. This popular annual exhibition opened on Tuesday January 16th, kicking off the People’s Choice selection process. We invited the public to participate in our People’s Choice voting process selecting the Best of Show, Second-place and Third-place awards. This voting concluded during the public reception held on Friday, February 2nd in the main gallery. Sandra Dennison was selected as the Best of Show for her watercolor painting titled, Overlook. William Roush received Second-place for his water-color A Warm Memory, and Dennis Stoiber received Third-place for his watercolor Early Season Snow. The top 12 images can be found on our Facebook page CVartcenter under Albums.

STUDENT & FACULTY EXHIBITIONAny person who took a class here at CVAC within the 2017 calendar year was invited to participate in our annual Student Faculty Exhibition, displayed from November 20th through December 15th. This exhibition, different than others held here at CVAC, placed emphasis on first time exhibitors. “Taking that first step can be scary” stated CVAC Director, Danielle Dieterich. “It is one thing to create art, it is another to display it.” CVAC is pleased to announce that 45 artists submitted a total of 87 pieces of art during this year’s exhibition.

The reception for the Student Faculty Exhibition, held a on dreadfully chilly night on December 8, attracted over 70 attendees. The students were excited to catch up with their fellow classmates, instructors and friends as they submitted their last-minute People’s Choice votes. The exhibition’s People’s Choice voting process drew many people to CVAC for the first time. Our community truly enjoyed voting for their favorites as we received over 200 ballots.

Taking Third-place, Mo Mosyjowski for her painting Farina, Second-place went to Sandra Dennison for her work Before They’re Gone, and Rob Bobel took First-place by a landslide for his wood carving Carolina Wren-1. It was wonderful to see the reactions on these artists’ faces as they received their prizes. It was also indicative of how much the wood carving program has grown under the superb direction of Tom Baldwin.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: DINO MASSARONI From the age of four, I have loved to draw. My artwork often elicited approval and encour-agement from friends and family which gave me confidence and self esteem at an early age.

On a field trip to the Cleveland Museum of Art when I was ten, I became bored and disappointed with the abstract works of art in the galleries we were marched through by our teacher. I wandered away from my herded classmates to explore other galleries in hopes of finding something interesting. As I descended a flight of steps and rounded a corner, I found myself alone and face-to-face with

“Le Repos,” a large oil painting by William Adolphe Bouguereau. The illusion of natural realism so impressed me, and I remember thinking, “I want to paint like that!” The memory of that experience has inspired me and remained a driving force in my work.

As a portrait artist, I work from life in the studio which has taught me the importance of first-hand observation. Painting “all’aperto” (Italy’s term for “in the open air”) broadens and enhances the studio experience, and my paintings benefit from the melding of the two. This experience also helps when it becomes necessary to work from photographic reference.

I believe that natural realism has a powerful effect on people. I create artwork that honestly describes a subject’s visible texture, and in so doing, honestly describes its hidden texture – its spirit. Notwithstanding this 268 word state-ment, it’s important that my artwork speaks for itself – to communicate in a language so universal as to be understood by anyone throughout the world.

AN INTERVIEW WITH ANN FERGUSON KAH by Annie FryJanuary 22, 2018: I recently had the privilege of sitting down to talk with Ann Ferguson Kah. Born in Scotland, she came to the United States when she was three. A prolific artist, involved with the art community, Ann has been a member of Cuyahoga Valley Art Center for a number of years. She is a member as well in the Hudson Society of Artists, Whiskey Painters of America, Ohio Watercolor Society, Akron Society of Artists, Ohio Plein Air Society and the Crooked River Gang. Ann has been in shows across the country. Three of her Plein Air paintings were recently chosen to hang in the Riffe building in Columbus,

and will go from there to a Plein Air exhibit in the Portsmouth Museum of Ohio Art.

Ann has always loved artistic expression, but did not start in earnest until a time when her children were young. Ann said “everyone is an artist to start with, until they train it out of you”. She has studied with Clarence Perkins, Don Getz, Hal Scroggy and Fred Graff. She credits Marc Moon with her interest in oil painting. When she paints she tries to channel Moon. “Marc’s paintings tell you what time of day, even the temperature in the scene you have painted, and I’d love to be able to express that as well as he did.” He taught her to be a keen observer of the light and the weather.

Ann’s objective in painting is simply to become a better painter, and her love of nature and frequent hikes in the parks have led her to specialize in landscapes. She doesn’t begin with detailed drawings: “Paint the big shapes, get to the point of the painting right away, and make the rest of the scene harmonize with the focal point”. She is careful not to overwork a painting, but would prefer to paint boldly and simply. She says she is often found at her easel shouting “Ump. Ump.” (“Use more paint!”) Ann loves to paint Plein Air, but finds she is painting more in her home studio these days. But even there, her objective is to paint in the same way she would have painted outdoors. She paints something almost everyday. Her experience and love of painting is clearly expressed in her beautiful paintings.
