On the third Saturday of September each year, volunteers around the world take part in the world’s biggest coastal cleanup, known as International

Coastal Cleanup Day. The event has been held internationally each year for

over 20 years, when people head to the beaches and begin removing debris and rubbish from shorelines, waterways and oceans. This year the event took place worldwide on Saturday, 18 September 2010.

The problem of marine debris does not necessarily start in the ocean, but is dumped further inland and washed down into the oceans. Statistics from the 1999 ICC showed that 59% of debris collected was from land sources. Each year there is a vast increase in the number of marine animals injured or entangled in debris found in the oceans. Turtles mistake floating plastic bags as food and thousands of seals, whales, dolphins, sharks and birds die from entanglement in fishing line and other debris.

The aim of the cleanup is:

• To remove debris from all bodies of water;

• To collect valuable information about debris;

• To heighten public awareness of the causes of litter and debris;

• To make a positive change and to promote water pollution prevention efforts worldwide.

In order to promote this day and clean up the world weekend one organization has formed in Australia named as “clean up the world”. This organization will monitor this day in collaborating various organizations throughout the world, on getting the plans from other organizations in the world - clean up the world activity will send them the promotional materials to appreciation certificates. This is the organization which will frame out a theme for this day. This year the theme is “communities caring for Nature”-2010.

With reference to this The Association for Environment Conservation Advocacy & Solutions (AECAS) organized a event at famous Natural resort”Perupalem Beach on 18th September -2010 on behalf of clean up the world activity –Australia.

Note: The 2009 Banner is used here because we are against using Flexi Banners

in our District, and also it is very happy that our Honorable district collector

strictly banned using plastic and polythene. Apart of this we printed this year

theme posters and badges on papers rather than Banners. Every participant

tagged a badge containing this year cuw theme.
