The cutting is easy for this colorful quilt that is far easier to make than it might appear. The diagonal setting connects the blocks in a clever woven pattern that floats on the same solid white used in the blocks. You’ll cut only strips, squares, and rectangles from the prints in the three distinct colorways of the Washington Depot collection by Denyse Schmidt. So grab your rotary cutter and “cut loose” but with accuracy, as you prepare the pieces for this modern quilt.

Sewing InstructionsAll seam allowances are 1⁄4”wide (.64cm). Sew the pieces with right sides together.

Block AssemblyYou will make a total of 32 blocks in various fabric combi-nations using the same assembly method and the fabric combinations shown (Figs. 4-9). Refer to Fig. 3 for the cut sizes of each piece in each block row. The piece layout is the same for the 6 block variations in the quilt.

Quilt Top Assembly3. Following the Quilt Layout for the block placement

and orientation, arrange the blocks in diagonal rows with the 4 corner triangles and 14 side setting triangles of Fabric X.

4. Sew the units together in each row and press the seam allowances as directed by the arrows. Sew the rows together in order, matching intersecting seamlines. Press the seam allowances toward the lower right corner of the quilt top. Square up the quilt top as needed, cutting away the sashing strip excess that extends at the top and left-hand edges.

Quilt Finishing5. Prepare a 76” x 93” (193.04cm x 236.22cm) backing

panel. Trim away any stray threads on the back of the quilt top. Press the backing and the quilt top to remove all wrinkles.

6. Layer the backing, batting, and quilt top; baste the layers together using your favorite method. Quilt as desired. Trim the backing and batting even with the quilt-top edges.

7. Sew the (9) 21⁄2” x WOF (6.35cm x WOF) Fabric K strips together with diagonal seams to make one long strip. Press the seams open. Fold the strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and press.

8. With raw edges even, sew the binding strip to the top of the quilt and miter the corners as you reach them. Turn the binding to the back of the quilt and hand-stitch in place.
