Providing a framework for the coordination of the management of events that constitute a public health emergency of international concern and improve the capacity of all countries to detect, assess, notify and respond to public health threats.
Diseases can spread via international travel & trade. Health crisis in one country can affect livelihoods and economies in many parts of the world.
Crisis can result from emerging infections like Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) or a new human influenza pandemic.
IMPORTANCE OF IHR IN TRAVEL & TOURISM
First adopted by WHO members in 1969, the old IHR applied to cholera, yellow fever & plague.
Travel & trade increased over the last 35 years and the major revision updated rules to prevent international spread of diseases while minimizing interference with world travel & trade.
While health measures to control spread of diseases at borders remain one important element, rapid response at the source as well as fast & sincere reporting play an role in preventing spread of communicable diseases.
In this context, UNWTO conducted the workshop : “Communications and Incentive: The Importance of Fast & Sincere Reporting”
