Rob Rice Homes has been working with Canyon Creek for over 25 years. Helena, Rob’s wife, oversees design choices and recently expanded the cabinet selections to include Legend, a Shaker-like door style in five of Canyon Creek’s top-selling finishes. The cabinets feature drawers with dovetail construction, and full extension drawer guides with soft close functionality. There’s also a painted finish upgrade for new home buyers to choose.

Helena says: “We are excited to offer more choices than ever before, so a buyer’s home will be unique—just the way they like it. We will also now be using rich, Beech wood for our cabinets. These choices reflect current, but timeless trends.”

The company has won the “Best of South Sound” for three straight years beginning in 2013. This is a distinction made by voters throughout the region who are readers of this popular local newspaper.

According to Dave Irion, regional sales manager for Canyon Creek, “Over the years, Rob Rice Homes have changed with the times. They are always on top of the trends, looking for improvements and the latest in design,” he continues. “They take care of their customers and build a great home. We couldn’t ask for a better partner.”

Rob and Helena have lived in the area for many years and are committed to supporting their community through financial donations and the sponsorship of various children’s organizations. Rob is also a lifetime board member of the Olympia Master Builders trade association, Thurston County Economic Development Council and Commencement Bank.

Colors of the Year

Every year the Pantone Color Institute chooses a color of the year that is a snapshot of what is being seen around the globe. This color tends to influence everything from fashion to make-up, automotive, décor and more.

Greenery, the 2017 Pantone Color of the Year, is a lively green hue that according to Pantone, “signals consumers to take a deep breath, oxy-genate and reinvigorate.” This color might seem a little too exuberant for some people to put in the home on a large scale, but as seen in the image above, it makes for a great accessory color.

Pantone isn’t the only one to choose a color of the year. Houzz put together a list of what various paint manufacturers believe to be the 2017 Color of the Year. For the most part, the paint companies’ choices are much softer than Greenery, leaning towards greyish blues and purples—with one exception being a bold yellow.

Dunn-Edwards Paints, located in the Southwestern US, chose Honey Glow—a happy yellow color—as their 2017 color of the year. This burst of color is similar to Mojave, found in our Curated Collection (featured at left).

Colors of the Year (continued)With grey being the “up and coming” trend this past year, it’s not surprising that many of the paint manufacturers’ picks lean towards a grey hue.

Benjamin Moore’s Shadow, a deep dark purple-grey, will add drama to a home. Shadow is best used in a light filled room, as it can shift to gloomy in the wrong space.

Keeping with the purple-grey hue trend, PPG Paints, Glidden and Olympic all went lighter for 2017. These soft shades are perfect for adding a peaceful feel in your home. And for small doses, Kelly-Moore proposes Kettleman. As a dark-grey, neutral, Kettleman pairs well with many lighter hues.

The image below showcases Poised Taupe, a cool medium grey-brown. Being the perfect mix between warm and cool, it is Sherwin-Williams choice for color of the year.

Shelf Life 101: When to Toss Pantry Items

Spices won’t spoil, but should still be tossed three years after they’ve been opened. Any longer and they won’t taste as good.

Honey will eventually start to crystalize, but it won’t ever go bad

Olive oil is good for 18 months

Baking soda starts to lose its potency once opened. If it still bubbles after mixed with vinegar, it’s still good to use.

Vinegar should be pitched after two years

Flour stored in an airtight container will last up to a year

Brown rice spoils before white or jasmine rice due to its oil content. To keep it fresh longer, try storing it in the freezer.

Dried beans kept in an airtight container will keep for two years

Dried pasta can be kept for three years before you should throw it out

Peanut butter only lasts for three months

It can be difficult to tell if a pantry item has gone bad or not. Some don’t carry an expiration date or it’s difficult to tell if it applies to an unopened container. Avoid using stale ingredients with this guide to opened pantry items.

Cutting Boards: Wood vs. PlasticIf you are in the market for a new cutting board, there are endless options to choose from. But how do you decide between wood and plastic?

If you plan to use your new cutting board for meat and fish, a plastic one is the way to go. Plastic cutting boards aren’t absorbent like wood ones, but they can still hold bacteria so it’s a must to wash and dry them after every use. Fortunately, plastic cutting boards are both durable and can usually go in the dishwasher.

Many people are drawn to wood cutting boards simply because they look good on kitchen counters. Wood is also softer than plastic making it a better choice if you are worried about damaging your sharp knives. A downside is that wood cutting boards absorb everything and should only be used for fruits, vegetables and cooked meats.

There are pros and cons to both plastic and wood cutting boards. Keep your chopping as efficient and clean as possible by having both.

Door Style of the Month:Shaker Family

Top left: Shaker’s flat center panel and minimal detail gives it the versatility to work well with traditional, modern and contemporary design styles.

Lower left: Nothing beats the clean, simple lines of the Shaker family. With chameleon-like qualities that blend well with many types of décor, they continue to be one of the most popular door families. (Valley Forge shown.)

Top right: Our Shaker Family includes a range of doors with similar, yet distinct characteristics. (Lynden shown.)

Lower right: For those who like the Shaker style door, but are looking for something with a little more detail, Normandy is the way to go. The groove at the mortise and tenon joint adds visual texture and highlights the construction style.
