Meet Our Spokesperson — A Three-time Olympian

Who better to inspire people to eat fresh vegetables than Suzy Favor Hamilton? A native of Stevens

Point, Wisconsin — the heart of Wisconsin’s potato farmlands — Favor Hamilton won eleven state titles in

high school, is the winningest female collegiate athlete at the University of Wisconsin, won nine NCAA

championships and was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Decade in the 90s. She also won seven U.S.

National Championships. Today, she lives in Madison, Wisconsin with her family and travels the nation as

a motivational speaker, helping people adopt healthier lifestyles and support their local growers by eating

fresh produce.

Wisconsin Healthy Grown Potatoes

What we do on our farms impacts the world around us. To preserve today’s resources, we need to farm

sustainably.

In 2001, the WPVGA partnered with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the International Crane

Foundation, the World Wildlife Fund and the Defenders of Wildlife to establish the Wisconsin Eco-Potato

partnership and develop a sustainable standard for growing potatoes — Healthy Grown®. Each year, our

farmers, packers and shippers are audited by Protected Harvest — an independent oversight

organization that ensures strict adherence to sustainable agriculture standards.

Our Healthy Grown sustainable farmers work with ecologists, conservationists and University of

Wisconsin researchers to:

Develop and utilize integrated pest management techniques that do not harm the environment.

Restore natural ecosystems and remove invasive plants to benefit native plants and animals.

Prevent erosion, conserve quality water and improve production.

Potatoes Are Packed with Nutrition

Potatoes provide incredible nutrition at an incredible value. A skin-on medium potato (5.3 oz) costs only

25 cents per serving and:

Is gluten-free, cholesterol-free, fat-free and sodium-free.

Has only 110 calories.

Offers 45% of your daily recommended Vitamin C.

Provides you with 2 grams of fiber.

Is the most affordable fruit or veggie source of fresh potassium — 620 grams, which is more than a banana provides.

Why Buy Wisconsin Potatoes?

There’s no place on earth like Wisconsin for growing potatoes.

Because of our climate, we experience less plant disease and invasive pests.

We enjoy vigorous, consistent growth due to our rich glacial, low-density soils.

Our state’s vast network of dairy farmers provides us with manure to enrich our soils.

We utilize precision groundwater irrigation, which improves food safety.

Our centralized location is supported by a robust food production, processing and transportation infrastructure that can deliver produce in under 48 hours while offering a lower food-miles option for states east of the Mississippi.

Wisconsin offers a wide variety of quality potatoes — Russet, Round White, Round Red, Yellow Flesh, and Blue and Purple.

We preserve our natural resources and have an eco-friendly sustainable potato brand — Healthy Grown®.

Our growers have access to some of the best seed, research, packaging and potato storage facilities in the world.

Our Growers Are Supported by a Robust Network

Established in 1948, the Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association (WPVGA) is a vast

support network that provides over 150 Wisconsin grower organizations with the resources to produce

and market the highest quality potatoes for our nation. The WPVGA offers grower education, legislative

support, environmentally sound research and consumer education, advertising and promotion. The

WPVGA also supports the research and initiatives of the Wisconsin Healthy Grown® brand, helping

growers produce quality potatoes in an eco-friendly and sustainable manner.

Pick the Perfect Potato

Wisconsin Russet potatoes make for a light and fluffy baked potato, creamy mashed potatoes and a

crispy, yet tender, French fry. In Wisconsin, we grow Century Russet, Frontier Russet, Goldrush, Ranger

Russet, Russet Burbank, Silverton, Shepody and Russet Norkotah potatoes.

Wisconsin Round White potatoes are versatile and can be used to make mashed potatoes, gratins,

soups, salads and casseroles. They are perfect scalloped and roasted too. In Wisconsin, we grow Atlantic

and Superior round white potatoes.

Wisconsin Round Red potatoes are well suited for salads, roasting, boiling, and steaming. We grow

Cherry Red, Chieftin, LaRouge, Norland, Pontiac and Red Bliss round red potatoes.

Wisconsin Yellow Flesh potatoes are best prepared as a baked, mashed or roasted potato. Wisconsin

growers provide Ruby Crescent, Sierra Gold, Yukon Gold, Yellow Finnish and Russian Banana Fingerling

yellow flesh potatoes.

Wisconsin Blue and Purple potatoes have a subtle nutty flavor that is accentuated when steamed or

baked. In Wisconsin, we grow All Blue and Caribe blue and purple potatoes.
