From the Bay to The A, From The Big Apple to The Big Peach, and From Everywhere In BetweenLarge Companies Stake Their Claim in the Capital of the South
Atlanta has emerged as a hot spot for corporate relocations and large regional and technology hubs. As the economic and social engine of the Southeast, the city is No. 3 for Fortune 500 companies with 18 (not to mention the headquarters for Waffle House and Chick-fil-A) with more on the way. Atlanta has established itself as one of the most desirable places in the nation to do business.
The largest city in the No. 1 ranked state for business climate has proven particularly attractive to tech companies looking to capitalize on Atlanta’s deep and diverse talent pool and entrepreneurial spirit. An abundance of young talent calls the city home, and as the nation’s top moving destination, Atlanta is predicted to see one of the nation’s largest increases in residents aged 25-39 comprising its population in the 2020s.

Ranked the No. 3 city for startups, behind just New York
and San Francisco, Atlanta is home to 10 tech unicorns,
three of which joined the list of companies valued over $1
billion within the past six months: Greenlight, SalesLoft,
and Calendly. Funding to Atlanta hit a five-year high in
2020 with $1.9 billion invested. Atlanta is quickly gaining
a reputation as a tech city, bolstered by its position as
the world leader in FinTech, with more than 70% of all
payments processed in North American going through
companies located in the Metro area. Atlanta boasts the
second highest number of tech jobs in the South behind
only Dallas, with more than 50,000 added in past decade
and another 20,500 forecasted by 2030. More than 50
tech companies and a myriad of corporate tech operations
already have a presence in the market, with its low cost
of living making it an attractive alternative to the nation’s
more traditional tech hubs.

Atlanta also boasts a highly educated workforce, with
36.6% of the population having earned a bachelor’s degree
or higher. A whopping 292,000 students are enrolled in
54 two- and four-year colleges and universities within the
Metro Atlanta/Athens area. In addition to Emory University
and Georgia Tech, the latter of which leads the nation
in the number of engineering and bachelor’s degrees
awarded, Atlanta is home to the Atlanta University Center
Consortium, the world’s oldest and largest association of
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs): Clark
Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Morehouse School
of Medicine, and Spelman College. Atlanta’s diverse talent
pool will be further boosted by Apple and IBM, both of
which plan to establish technology and innovation centers
for HBCU students.
Atlanta’s diverse population is a key differentiator for the
market, with many companies citing it as a key factor in
their site selection process. Airbnb’s early 2021 decision to
establish its Southeast technology hub in the metro was
driven in large part by Atlanta’s “commitment to diversity
and inclusion” as well as its “robust and diverse technical
talent pool.” Operating in Atlanta will be a fundamental
part of the San Francisco-based company’s efforts to
increase the share of underrepresented minorities and
women in its workforce by 2025.
Atlanta’s business friendly environment and access
to talent is expected to continue to drive corporate
headquarters and relocations making their mark in The Big
Peach.
