------------------------------------------------2. Interface------------------------------------------------

a) Following the interfacing manufacturer's instructions regarding heat setting & press time, apply the fusible interfacing pieces to the WRONG side of the corresponding focus fabric pieces.

diagram to right) ✔ Wristlet strap -- center interfacing piece on strap (see

diagram to right).

b) Place the following sew-in interfacing pieces on the WRONG side of the corresponding fabric pieces. Pin in place if desired.

✔ (1) sew-in interfacing A -- (1) focus fabric A✔ (1) sew-in interfacing A -- (1) lining A✔ (2) sew-in interfacing B -- (1) lining B✔ (2) sew-in interfacing B -- (1) lining B

------------------------------------------------3. Wristlet Strap Footing------------------------------------------------

a) Fold the strap footing piece in half, WRONG sides together, along the 2.5" length.

b) Press to create a crease down the center.

c) Open the piece up, and fold one side in to meet the center crease and press.

d) Fold the other side in to meet center crease and press.

e) Fold the footing piece in half again at the middle crease.

f) Pin, clip, or hold the open side closed.

g) Beginning on the open side, edge stitch at 1/8" down both 2.5" (64mm) sides.

h) Slide the d-ring over the strap footing piece and fold the footing piece in half.

i) Stitch across the footing as close to the d-ring as your presser foot will allow.

j) On the RIGHT side of (1) focus fabric piece B, measure down 1.5" (4cm) from the top on the right hand side.

k) Place the footing piece so the upper edge of the footing is at the 1.5" (4cm) mark, and the footing is facing toward the center of piece B.

l) Pin, clip, or hold the footing in place.

m) Sew the footing to piece B, stitching close to the edge (1/8" - 1/4").

------------------------------------------------4. Wristlet Strap------------------------------------------------

a) Fold the strap piece in half, WRONG sides together, along the 15" (38cm) length.

b) Press to create a crease down the center.

c) Open the piece up and fold one side in to meet the center crease and press.

d) Fold other side in to meet center crease and press.

e) Fold the strap piece in half again along the center crease.

f) Pin or clip the open side closed.

g) Beginning on the open side, edge stitch at 1/8" down both 15" ( cm) sides.

h) Insert one end of the strap into the bottom of the lobster clip, and fold the strap up about 1.5" (4cm). Pin, clip or hold the end in place.

i) Stitch across the strap a few times to hold the end firmly in place.

j) Fold the other end of the strap down to overlap the end stitched in place.

k) Sew the second end in place by stitching a box shape over the overlapped ends. Tip: The fabric will be thick and the strap is quite thin, so you may find it easiest to hand crank the needle to sew the strap end in place.

l) Stitch across the strap just above where the two ends overlap.

------------------------------------------------5. Focus Fabric Shell------------------------------------------------

a) Mark darts on the WRONG side of the (2) focus fabric B pieces.

b) Sewing directly on the markings, stitch darts in place on the WRONG side of both B pieces.

c) Press stitching to shrink and set thread.

d) Place the (2) focus fabric B pieces RIGHT sides together.

e) Match up the dart sets on each side, folding one dart toward the center and one dart away from the center (i.e. darts are going in opposite directions).

f) Pin matched up darts in place.

g) Finish matching the side & bottom of the B pieces and pin in place.

h) Sew around the sides & bottom.

i) Clip or notch curves.

j) Press stitching to shrink & set thread.

k) Press seams open flat at the top on both sides, and along the bottom center.

------------------------------------------------6. Make Flap------------------------------------------------

a) Place focus fabric A and lining A RIGHT sides together.

b) Match edges, and pin or clip in place around sides & bottom.

c) Sew around sides & bottom, leaving the flat edge open.

d) Trim the sew-in interfacing back close to the seam on both sides of the flap.

e) Notch curves.

f) Press stitching to shrink & set thread.

g) Turn the flap RIGHT side out through the open end.

h) Press to neaten the seam.

i) Topstitch at 1/4" around the sides and bottom of flap.

j) Mark snap placement for both snaps, just above the topstitching, on the RIGHT side of the flap lining.

k) Snip slits for the snap prongs, cutting through lining A and the sew-in interfacing on the back of lining A.

l) Insert snap prongs of one male snap through the slits. Tip: Place a piece of scrap fabric or batting over the prongs to provide a buffer between the snap prongs/washer and the fabric.

m) Fold prongs out flat to hold the snap in place. Tip: Prongs can be folded inward, but will be easier to feel through the fabric on the front of the flap.

n) Repeat steps l) - m) for second snap.

------------------------------------------------7. Attach Flap------------------------------------------------

a) Turn the focus fabric shell RIGHT side out.

b) Center the completed flap RIGHT sides together with the focus fabric shell. Line up the corners of the flap with the top of the bag shell.

c) Pin the flap in place.

d) Place the focus fabric shell, with the flap on the bottom, on your machine. The presser foot is resting on the inside of the bag shell, and the lining side of the flap is face down on the throat plate.

e) Sew the flap in place using a 1/4" allowance, following the curved edge of the bag shell.

f) Trim the flap fabric to match the curved top of the bag shell.

------------------------------------------------8. Sew Pocket------------------------------------------------

a) Lay the pocket piece RIGHT side facing up, with the longer edge as the length and the shorter edge as the width.

b) Fold the top edge down to meet the bottom edge, so the fabric is now RIGHT sides together.

c) Match up the sides and bottom and pin in place.

d) Sew around the sides and bottom, leaving an opening for turning along the bottom edge. Tip: Sew the opening closed first.

e) Clip corners.

f) Turn pocket RIGHT side out through the opening.

g) Press.

h) Slip stitch opening closed. Tip: Closing the opening can be skipped, as long as you make sure when you stitch the pocket to the lining piece in step 9. g), the stitching is close enough to the edge to close the opening.

i) Topstitch at 1/8" - 1/4" across the top folded edge of the pocket.

------------------------------------------------9. Lining Shell------------------------------------------------

a) Mark darts on the WRONG side of the (2) lining fabric B pieces.

b) Stitch darts in place on the WRONG side of both B pieces, sewing directly on the dart marking.

c) Press stitching to shrink and set thread.

d) Clip extra fabric from lining darts if desired (these darts can be quite thick).

e) Center the completed pocket, 1" from the bottom, on the RIGHT side of (1) lining piece B.

f) Sew around the sides and bottom of the pocket, attaching it to lining piece B.

g) Place the (2) lining B pieces RIGHT sides together, matching the dart sets on both sides. Pin in place.

h) Finish matching the sides and bottom of the B pieces, and pin place.

i) Sew around the sides and bottom, attaching the B pieces together.

j) Clip or notch curves.

k) Press stitching to shrink & set thread.

l) Press side seams open at the top on each side.

------------------------------------------------10. Attach Lining------------------------------------------------

a) Place the focus fabric bag shell inside the lining bag shell, with the pocket & flap on the same side. The focus fabric and lining fabric are now RIGHT sides together.

b) Match up top edges of bag shells and pin in place around top.

c) Beginning on the the front (side without flap/pocket), sew a few stitches and then backstitch. Lengthen your stitch and sew about 3". Backstitch again.

d) Return to your regular stitch length, and finish sewing around the top of the clutch.

e) Press around the top of the clutch to shrink & set thread.

f) Press the seam on the front of the clutch open flat.

g) Remove the long stitches between the backstitching.

h) Pull the focus fabric bag out from inside the lining.

i) Turn the clutch RIGHT side out through the opening.

j) Tuck the lining down inside the focus fabric shell. Use your fingers to massage the seam into place if necessary.

------------------------------------------------11. Finishing------------------------------------------------

a) Stuff the clutch with tissue paper, clean plastic bags or scrap fabric to simulate fullness.

b) Fold the flap down into the closed position.

c) Double check that the flap is straight, and in the position you want it to be when closed.

d) Mark snap placement on the clutch body.

e) Snip slits through the focus fabric layer of fabric only.

f) Insert one female snap.

g) Attach snap washer & fold prongs to hold the snap in place.

h) Repeat f) - g) for second snap.

i) Slip stitch the opening closed. Tip: Follow the crease created in step 10. f) to sew the opening closed neatly.

j) Topstitch around top of clutch at 1/4". If the clutch does not fit around your sewing machine arm, topstitch from the inside of the clutch. Tip: Cover the snaps on the clutch body with scraps of fabric or batting to keep them from being scratched as they pass over the throat plate.

k) Clip any stray threads and attach wristlet strap.
