Guide Wheel Based Motion Basic principle

Guide wheel rolls on matching track surface

• Wheels are ball bearings with external running surfaces

•  Rails are linear profiles with running surfaces

•  Rings are curved rotary profiles with running surfaces

Page 13: Curved Motion System Design for Machinery and Automation

Guide Wheel Based Motion Key Advantages

Vee surfaces generate a “wiping” action when used on matching linear vee rails

•  Difference in peripheral speed = velocity gradient

Works in harsh environments exposed to dust, dirt or debris

•  Wiping action pushes debris out of the way•  Often the best solution for dirty applications

Page 14: Curved Motion System Design for Machinery and Automation

Guide Wheel Based Motion Key Advantages

Bearing balls are internal, protected and lubricated for life

•  Seals or Shield options

Big advantage over recirculating ball linear guide technology

•  Balls run on exposed rails directly•  Limited seal protection•  Debris ingress leads to rapid failure

Page 15: Curved Motion System Design for Machinery and Automation

Guide Wheel Based Motion Key Advantages

Provides smooth & quiet operation with high load carrying capacity

•  High quality bearing grade steel  Carbon and stainless steel

•  Hardened for durability•  Precision ground surfaces

Very low stiction and coefficient of friction  Industrial grade and performance

•  Suitable for continuous use

Page 16: Curved Motion System Design for Machinery and Automation

Guide Wheel Based Motion Key Advantages

Adjustable eccentric bearing mount•  Set preload between wheel and rail/ring•  Adjust play due to wear•  Longer usable life•  Replace rail/ring, or wheel

  Profile rail must replace both

Page 17: Curved Motion System Design for Machinery and Automation

Motion Components Guide Wheel Designs

Slimline bearing type•  Single row ball bearing•  Low profile, lower capacity•  Lowest cost

Twin bearing type•  2 individual ball bearings•  Compliance, smoother running•  Tolerates misalignment

Slimline

Twin

Double

Double row bearing type•  Single piece double row ball•  Higher load capacity•  Slightly more debris tolerance

Floating bearing type•  Needle rollers•  Axial movement•  Prevents binding on parallel rails

Floating
