As part of my NIH Research Supplement grant, I spend an average of fifteen hours a week in the laboratory of Jay Kolls, MD, establishing a skill set in basic science research through the study of the effect of acute and chronic alcohol intoxication on tumor necrosis factor production in monocytes and macrophages using both in vitro and vivo models. Specifically, I am working with the Kolls lab to determine whether chronic ethanol affects histone methylation in the TNF alpha promoter region and if ethanol affects methylation within the interferon regulator factor 3 region of the promoter. Data from this work and the work on my Masters thesis in the Molina Physiology lab will be the basis of the K-23 grant which I will submit in mid-2011.
