Jan 2005 – Founder and CTO, Amphotonix Limited. Present Founded Amphotonix Limited and raised finance to acquire and use

the IP and know how of Kamelian Limited which went into receivership in July 2004. Performed this role whilst seconded 50% from the University of Glasgow until September 2010.

June 2000 - Co-Founder and Principle Design Engineer, Kamelian Ltd. August 2003

I was one of the co-founding team of Kamelian Ltd, a start-up company specialising in the design and manufacture of advanced devices for the telecommunications sector. Subsequent to contributing to the business plan and raising finance, I was responsible for device design, test and the running of a systems test-bed and design of the manufacturing back end processes whilst running the Glasgow office.

Feb. 2000 - Senior Scientist, Corning Research Centre. (formerly Photonics July 2000 Technology Research Centre of BT Laboratories)

The short period spent under new management focussed on bringing new components to the market place (in tandem with other company units across the world). I acquired an appreciation of commercial considerations as opposed to the largely academic environment which prevailed at BT.

Oct.1997 - Senior Management and Professional Grade, BT Laboratories. Jan. 2000

Promoted to Senior Management and Professional Grade, and continued to develop high speed transmission and optical switching concepts. Managed several European projects culminated in a successful 40Gbit/s field trial of transmission between Ipswich and Norwich.

Apr.1996 - Management and Professional Grade, BT Laboratories. Sept. 1997

Appointed on the completion of my PhD and contributed to two of the main thrusts for BT corporate project work at this time; devices for fibre access networks and ultrahigh speed transmission and optical switching.

Research Activities The themes of my research activities to date are expanded in the following sections this includes work performed both at BT Laboratories and the University of Glasgow Optical Switching

The first project conducted at BT Laboratories was concerned with the design, fabrication and characterisation of optoelectronic switch matrices. Progress was made on the reduction of the insertion loss of these components by improving the dry etching of the mirrors in the structure. Since Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers (SOAs) were central to the operation of these switches and the next design iteration was focussed on changing and improving this component. I subsequently became manager of the SOA development effort at BT Labs. Experimental demonstration supported by theory showed for the first time that travelling wave effects in the SOA allowed operation of this device when used as a nonlinear optical switch at speeds in excess of the effective carrier lifetime. Access Network Devices For the access network devices, cost reduction was the main aim and therefore devices suitable for low cost packaging were of great importance. This was achieved by integrating mode expander regions with SOA devices. This resulted in work describing the first travelling wave SOA without antireflection coatings and the lowest noise figure SOA. High Speed Transmission Managed the SOA effort on the ACTS-HIGHWAY project, an EU funded high speed transmission activity looking at ways of using existing standard, dispersive fibre. The work centred on using the nonlinear properties of SOAs to create a phase conjugate signal by four wave mixing which could then be used for dispersion compensation via mid-span spectral inversion. Record transmission distances and wavelength translations were achieved at 40Gbit/s demonstrating the efficacy of the optimisation. This project culminated in a successful 40Gbit/s field trial of transmission between Ipswich and Norwich in the UK. Optical Logic Research also focussed on replicating electronic functionality in the optical domain, and progress was published on optical subsystems carrying out routine electronic functions such as binary counters, PRBS generators, parity checkers and regenerative memories. This all optical logic work was justified by the fact that the building blocks of these subsystems were suitable for operation at speeds above those possible in electronics. It was therefore extremely important to demonstrate extremely high (80-100Gbit/s) operation of these all optical regenerative gates and this formed the core of my work for most of this period. Record demonstrations of 100Gbit/s wavelength conversion by cross gain modulation and four wave mixing were stepping stones to the demonstration of the worlds fastest regenerative logic gate at 80Gbit/s, the output eye diagram of which appeared on the front cover of Science in November 1999. Ultra-fast Phenomena in Semiconductors

Ultra-fast time domain measurements using a commercial Optical Parametric Amplifier system giving 150fs tuneable pulses form 0.4um to 2.3um. I upgraded an existing test capability to perform time domain measurements on a variety of devices such as all optical wavelength converters, photonic band-gap devices, vertical cavity dilute nitride lasers and AlInGaAs saturable absorbers for passive mode locking applications. GaN microLEDs and Visible Light Communications GaN is an extremely important material system which is driving the move to solid state lighting. The material properties of GaN are not well understood and this work has been looking at the bias dependencies of the carrier lifetime and trying to relate this back to the device physics. This has been done by studying microLED devices (radius<100um) and their modulation bandwidth. This work has produced the worlds highest bandwidth GaN LED and demonstrated prototype visible light communication systems including integrated CMOS drivers. Low Cost Lasers for PONs The price point for PON lasers is extremely challenging. This project is concerned with the design for manufacturing of F-P and DFB lasers for the PON markets given this price point in collaboration with a local SME in this market segment.

Commercial Activities This section provides more detail on Kamelian Ltd and Amphotonix Ltd with regard to the roles and responsibilities performed.

Responsible for device design. This was a full design from the ground up including epitaxial layer structure, waveguide and optical interface designs. Devices were made which had world leading PDG and noise figure performance with the necessary yields for manufacturing.

Internal delivery of mode expanded devices for hybrid integration. Active devices suitable for hybrid integration are very challenging to make since the required modes are very large. This leads to compromises in the electrical and optical performance. High performance devices were successfully delivered with the necessary alignment features, layer thicknesses and tolerances.

Equipment development and procurement. The Kamelian production line required automated bar, CoC and packaged device testers. After the development of a suitable test algorithm and strategy, my role here was to manage a team who successfully defined, procured and commissioned these automated test stations

Qualification strategy and implementation. This was the development of the back end chip burn-in and qualification process. This had not been done before for SOA based devices so the approach was based

on the modification of Telcordia 468. The work included the definition of EOL criteria, the measurement and verification of the relationship between ASE output and other parameters such as gain and saturated output power, the procurement of elevated temperature testing equipment and writing of customer facing qualification reports.

Research to support customer interaction and product definition. Systems research to define the required device specification for a given application as required by the customer using a 10Gbit/s systems testbed.
