SHORT SUMMARY/BIOGRAPhY

Miguel A. Guevara López obtained his BSc degree in Mathematics at the Higher Education Institute “Jose Marti” Camaguey, Cuba in 1987 and completed a PhD degree in Technical Sciences at the Computing, Mathematics and Physics Institute of Cuban Academy of Sciences, Cuba in 1997. He started his research activities in 1988 being his research interests mainly focused on digital image processing, pattern recognition and machine learning, data mining and artificial intelligence techniques with applications in image and data analysis. From April/1988 to December/2008, he worked as computer sciences professor at University of Ciego de Avila, Cuba (UNICA), where he attained the scientific category of Auxiliary Researcher in 1996 and the category of Titular (Full) Professor in 2005. There, he built a solid position as independent researcher, contributing decisively to the scientific development of UNICA through: (1) in 1992 he created the Computing Group at Center for Plants Biotechnology that he headed until 1998; (2) in 2000 he founded the Faculty of Computer Sciences, being its Dean until 2001; (3) in 2001 he introduced a MSc programme in Applied Computer Sciences, being its coordinator until 2007; and (4) in 2006 he founded the Centre for Advanced Technologies in Computer Sciences. He has performed and coordinated teaching activities in courses related to the Computer Sciences area in several University/Institutions. In 2008, he obtained a contract as Auxiliary Researcher at INEGI - Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management, Faculty of Engineering at University of Porto, Portugal, where he founded and leads the Biomedical Image and Data Analysis (BIOIDA); a multidisciplinary research group devoted to fundamental and applied research in biomedical image and data analysis. Summarizing, Miguel A. Guevara López published 54 articles: 22 in international and national peer reviewed journals; 3 books; 8 in book chapters and 21 in peer reviewed congress’ proceedings. He participated as researcher in 19 national and international scientific projects (10 as coordinator). He is a member of scientific national and international associations such as “APRP - Associação Portuguesa de Reconhecimento de Padrões” and “IAPR - International Association of Pattern Recognition”. He supervised 8 MSc Thesis, one PhD Thesis and one postdoctoral student.

Miguel Guevara worked as Computer Sciences Professor for a period of 20 years (April/1988 – June/2008) at University of Ciego de Avila (UNICA), Cuba and from 2003 to 2008 he was an Auxiliary Invited Professor at University of Aveiro, Portugal (in periods of 6 months each year). During this period he taught several disciplines/curricular units such as: “Database Management Systems”, “Algorithms and Programming Techniques”, “Programming Languages”, “Operative Systems and Computer Networks”, “Digital Signal and Image Processing”, “Intelligent Computer Sciences Systems” and “Digital Systems” among others. From 2003 to 2007, he was regent of the curricular units: “Intelligent Computer Sciences Systems” and “Digital Image Processing” at UNICA. 5.6 IN PORTUGAL 2012: BCDR: Breast Cancer Digital Repository

This research aims to develop a wide-ranging annotated BREAST CANCER DIGITAL REPOSITORY (BCDR) with two main objectives: (1) establishing a novel reference to explore computer-based detection and diagnosis methods, and (2) training medical students, formed physicians and other medical-related professionals. The creation of the BCDR was supported by the IMED Project (for Development of Algorithms for Medical Image Analysis), which was carried out by INEGI, CETA-CIEMAT and FMUP-HSJ, between March 2009 and February 2012. The IMED project aimed at creating medical image repositories and massive exploration of Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CADx) methods on GRID computing resources. Now, the three institutions continue to actively augment and develop the BCDR. (As project coordinator)

2012: (DISIAT) Software System Prototype for Evaluating Dental Implants New and Robust segmentation method for biomechanical and clinical evaluation of dental implants, in partnership with Faculty of Medicine, Univesity of Coimbra, supported by the FCT project PTDC/SAU-BEB/108658/2008 entitle «Avaliação Clínica e Biomecânica de Implantes Dentários Sujeitos a Platform Switching». (As advisor and researcher)

2010: (MIWAD) Mammography Image Workstation for Analysis and

Diagnosis. This workstation is being used and tested at Faculty of Medicine - Service of Radiology - Centro Hospitalar São João, University of Porto. MIWAD allows capturing and manipulated patient’s cases with breast cancer, producing datasets of features for exploring machine learning classifiers, and evaluating produced CADx methods. (As project coordinator)

Management of Lubrificants. This is a taylor-made integral database system to optimize the billing and Management of Lubrificants that was introduzed and applied in 14 agencies/enterprises of CUBALUB – for Cuban National Lubrificant’s Enterprise (as coordinator)

1995-1998: Set of Computer Vision-based Systems for automatizing Biotechnological Image and Data Analysis processes, developed at Plant Biotechnology Center (Bioplants), Ciego de Avila University, Cuba, focused to the following tasks (as coordinator):

� Image data acquisition and determination of microorganism’s

concentration. � Image data acquisition and growing evaluation of callus cells culture. � Image data acquisition and classification of sugar cane somatic embryos

in bioreactors environments. � Image data acquisition and analysis of electrophoresis bands to determine
