15. Deputed abroad:
I have been the leader of delegation of Youth at an International Live-in Experience of Youth at
Taize, France for two months (June-July) in 1994; as part of my research I have been to Singapore,
Sydney and Fiji Islands in 1999 to explore the receptivity to Indian spiritual traditions in Non-indic
cultural settings. I have represented the College at the World Level Summit of Salesian (Don Bosco)
University Institutions in Rome in 2001, 2004, and 2007. Participated and presented paper at the
Second Plenary of the delegates of Education Group of IUS at UCSH Santiago de Chile, 9-12
November 2010, the third plenary at Salesian University, Madrid, 2012, fourth plenary at Venice
Mestre 2014 and the fifth at UNISAL, Sao Paolo in September 2018. I was on Sabbatical in US from 1
January 2016 till 20 May 2016 during which did independent research work in the libraries of Yale
and Princeton Universities. In June-July2016 I was nominated Mentor for the IASACT by the United
Board and hosted in ChungChi College of Chinese University of Hong Kong. These were experiences
that helped in the present task as Indian representative of an International forum engaged in
devising a common research across the continents on the Impact of Education in transforming the
Identity Perceptions.
16. Any other relevant information
Analyzing and contributing to the impact of education on society has been a core concern in my
teaching as well as research and other activities that interfaced with the civil society. Therefore,
I attempt to follow an Inter-disciplinary approach in my teaching and research, involving
especially the fields of Social Philosophy, Literature, Hermeneutics, Sociology, History and

In May 2008, the Nepali Sahitya Sammelan, Darjeeling conferred a citation and memento for the
contribution made through the institution in promoting Nepali Language and Literature of Darjeeling.
In December 2008, the Rotary Club of Darjeeling presented a citation and memento for the
contribution made towards community building through the promotion of literary and other art forms.
In January 2012, by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Darjeeling at its Golden Jubilee celebrations for
services rendered in education, youth welfare, and social harmony in the region.
In November 2019 on 15th at Umrao Hotel, the IAF award for Salesian College by the International
Association of Facilitators.
George Thadathil: Personal Profile
Rev Prof George Thadathil is presently the Principal of Salesian College Sonada and Siliguri Extended
Campus. He has pastoral experience as co-pastor of a parish, and as diocesan and regional youth
director for the Catholic Youth Movement in India besides teaching experience in the seminary and
college. He has travelled much in connection with his administrative and academic commitments since
his own research in the University of Madras, completed in 2000, as a Fellow of Indian Council of
Philosophical Research (ICPR). His area of specialization is Cross Cultural Social Philosophy. He has
organized various research seminars engaging local scholarship with contemporary concerns of identity,
language and ethnicity. He is the author of Vision from the Margin: Study of the Sri Narayana Guru
Movement in the Literature of Nitya Chaitanya Yati (2007) and has edited and co-edited books like
Communities and Identity Consciousness: South Indian Trajectories (2004), Cultural Identity in Nepali
Language and Literature (2005), Subaltern Perspectives: Philosophizing in Context (2005), Cultural
Linguistic Transitions in the Nepali Speech Community of Darjeeling (2009), Teesta on the Run:
Development Induced Displacement in Sikkim 1975-2010 (2016), Brahmarshi Narayana Guru
(Translation from Malayalam to Nepali, 2016) besides contributing to a number of journals and edited
volumes on Philosophy, Literature and Social Sciences. His publications are the outcome of an attempt
to apply the research findings in South India (Ezhava Movement) onto the Language and Ethnicity based
identity formations in Darjeeling District, North East India. His administrative concerns of expanding a
Higher Educational Institution has also brought him into academic organizational bodies like Xavier
Board (association of catholic colleges of India), AIACHE (association of Christian Higher Education in
India), the IFCU (International Federation of Catholic Universities) and to be the member of the Court of
North Bengal University, to which his institution is affiliated. As part of his Sabbatical programme he has
been on the libraries of Yale, Princeton, Stanford and San Francisco Universities, on research work.
He has taught the basic courses in philosophy at the undergraduate level for over twenty years. He
continues with research in this field and is in the process of bringing out a volume on "Owning Locations:
Transforming Small Worlds". He is the Founder and Series editor of Salesian Journal of Humanities and
Social Sciences in its sixth year of publication as a biannual peer reviewed journal with ISSN: 0976-1861.

Identity Perceptions of marginalized communities.' Invited to be the mentor for 16 scholars from Asian
Universities at the IASACT (Institute for Advanced Studies in Asian Cultures and Theologies) Programme
in May-June 2016. He was co-director of the AsiaNetwork ANFEP 2018, in selecting and organizing the
learning experience for 10 US scholars about North East India and Eastern Himalayas. In this connection
he was also invited to the Annual Conferences held in Philadelphia in April 2018 and in San Diego in April
2019. He was part of the Indian China Indonesia Research consortium on changes in society and religion
organized for three years consecutively by the United Board and University of Hong Kong and was
invited to the EAO Translators Workshop held in Anisakan, Myanmar from 27-29 August 2019. He co-
organized the ACCS-AIACHE conference on "Socio-political Realities and Implications for Practical
Theologies and Higher Education in Asia" held at ACCS, Panayur, Chennai on 5-9 September 2019.
