I. RESEARCH, SCHOLARSHIP AND CREATIVE ACHIEVEMENTS SCHOLARLY FOCUS My scholarly focus centers on understanding human behavior in physical activity and sport within the conceptual framework of self-efficacy theory. Self-efficacy refers to people’s judgments of their capability to successfully perform a task or activity in a specific situation or context. People form their efficacy beliefs by combining and weighing different sources of efficacy information, and their perceptions of these efficacy beliefs affect their thought patterns, motivation, emotional reactions, and behavior. My early research focused on the development of self-efficacy in children. I examined which sources of information children selected to form their efficacy beliefs and how their self-efficacy influenced their motivation (choice, effort, persistence) to participate in sport and to be physically active. My research contributed to the literature by suggesting:

• There are developmental differences in children’s self-efficacy in terms of their accuracy of appraisal, their ability to overcome performance fears, and the sources of efficacy information they select to form their efficacy beliefs.

• Measurement of children’s self-efficacy beliefs should be modified and assessed differently than adults.

• Children can benefit from mental skills training focused on the enhancement of their self-efficacy.

• Coaches and physical education teachers have a significant impact on children’s self-efficacy in terms of how they design learning experiences, modify equipment and practice, and provide verbal and non-verbal feedback.

The important impact the coach has on children’s self-efficacy led me to examine more closely the role of the coach. My research has investigated the ways in which team and individual efficacy are influenced by coaches, how coaches’ self-efficacy predicts team performance, and how coaches’ conceptions of their own coaching ability impact their leadership ability and coaching effectiveness. Throughout my career, I have been involved with a research team as we conceptualized the term coaching efficacy and developed instrumentation to measure coaching efficacy. Coaching efficacy is defined as the extent to which coaches believe they have the capacity to affect the learning and performance of their athletes. Our coaching efficacy model proposed a conceptual framework for studying coaching efficacy that includes sources of coaching efficacy, dimensions of coaching efficacy, and outcomes for coaches and athletes. Our research culminating in the development and validation of three coaching efficacy inventories has served as an important psychometric impetus for the continuation and expansion of research on coaching efficacy in the field of sport psychology. My research in coaching efficacy has contributed to the literature by suggesting:

Melissa A. Chase 3

• Team and individual efficacy, performance, and satisfaction of athletes are positively

influenced by the coaches’ efficacy and athlete’s perception of the coaches’ competence. • The Coaching Efficacy Scale and revised Coaching Efficacy Scale II – High School Teams are

valid and reliable instruments to study and advance our knowledge of coaching efficacy in high school and collegiate coaches.

• The Athletes’ Perception of Coaching Competency Scale II – High School Teams is a valid and reliable instrument to study and advance our knowledge of athlete’s perception of the coaches’ competence.

• The Coaching Efficacy Scale II – Youth Sport Teams is a valid and reliable instrument to study and advance our knowledge of coaching efficacy in youth sport coaches.

My current research continues to examine the impact coaches have on children’s participation in sport. This research specifically examines the youth sport parent-coach (a coach who is also the parent of an athlete on the team). An estimated 80 to 90% of all youth sport coaches are parent-coaches, and yet we know very little about the dynamics and implications of this dual-role phenomenon for effective youth sport practice. My research has examined the levels of coaching efficacy, qualifications, and motives of youth sport parent-coaches in relation to youth sport coaches, from the perspective of the coach and youth sport administrator. My next study will examine the impact of parent-coaches from the perspective of youth sport participants. My overall motivation as a researcher is to utilize the tenets of self-efficacy theory to understand and thus enhance the sport experience for children and adults in sport and physical activity contexts. I am committed to this theory to practice endeavor, based on my prior life experiences as an athlete, physical educator, and coach, as well as my belief that self-efficacy theory provides insightful explanatory concepts that enable us to more fully understand human behavior. Selected Student Comments from Course Evaluations in 2015: Online Courses:

• She enhanced the online experience through an engaging online academic online experience. • The course overall was very well done for a J-term class. excellent lay out. • Professor Chase is the best, the class was great • I have taken a number of online classes to complete my college degree and Dr. Chase has been one of the most

flexible and responsive online instructors I have ever encountered. A great person to work with and learn from!! • Great online course! Loved the class and content

Classroom Courses: • Dr. Chase has so much coaching knowledge, and you could see her passion shine through every day. Dr. Chase

made me really think about what I would be doing in my future coaching career. • Dr. Chase is the best teacher in our department. She teaches in an innovative way that is focused on the students

learning and not traditional teaching ways. • Dr. Chase made me want to make a change in the coaching world. She is very passionate, and really has helped us

be ready for the real world if we want to coach. Having us demonstrate skills so we learn first hand how to teach to a team and what we can work on.

• Through the many projects and group discussions Dr. Chase made us think about cultural aspects of sport that I had never really thought about before. It was good to do different assignments besides papers to show that we understood the course content. The assignments that were given made the material fresh and more exciting to learn and understand. good projects, liked the digital storybook She challenged us to open up, and really express our opinions.

• Dr. Chase is the best teacher in the department! It is clear she has her focus on the student learning the material and not traditional teaching ways

• Dr. Chase found a way to make the course content interesting and present it in a way that was different than just lecturing all the time. Offered different ways to learn from many of the typical styles.

• The instructor enhanced my learning by showing passion for the class and respect for students She would give us real world examples, or used clips from movies to show us the leadership style in common movies, and media that we've seen before.

• Very good at describing assignments, easily accessible for questions. the assignments that we were assigned in this class pertained to my career so all the work felt like things I should be doing for my career anyways.

• Dr. Chase challenged my learning and made class fun. She kept the students involved. She was very approachable and laid back and cooperative She was very willing to give many visual examples (pictures and videos) which really helped her get her point across.

• Dr. Chase is one of the best teachers I've had so far at Miami. She's great in the classroom and also is very willing to meet and help you outside of class

• Honestly, the professor can make or break a class. The style the professor uses to relate the material to his/her students is key to their learning.

• Dr. Chase used various teaching tools to give each student an opportunity to learn the material with their own style. She used videos, articles, lectured, small groups, and brought in outside sources (speakers) to class.

• Dr. Chase not only taught us the material, but also how to find the answers; they all don't just come out of a book. • Dr. Chase, Dr. Vealey and Dr. Weinberg are by far the best instructors I have ever had, and your teaching styles,

although very different (which is a good thing), compliment one another very well. Thanks for a great semester! • I really admire Dr. Chase and her teaching style. I think she does a great job finding creative ways to learn and

apply material. • I really liked how the course was set up, encouraging graduates to take ownership of learning, applying and

facilitating course content. I also thoroughly appreciated the exam format. • This was one of the best class structures I have seen. • Dr. Chase created an environment where there was thoughtful discussion every week and active learning

opportunities throughout the semester. • Dr. Chase is a great instructor. I always felt challenged in her class, but experienced success and felt like I was

learning all the time. It was my favorite class here so far.
