Philosophy statement of teaching
Supporting Pedagogic Paradigms for Mentoring Architecture Students:
This effort incorporates experimenting wide spectrum of innovative teaching methods all
over the architectural education curriculum involving variety of conventional and emerging topics.
These topics are varying starting from innovative higher soft skills like inspiration and creative
thinking and ending with mastering lower hard skills like crafting and materializing.
Soft Skill topics include Computer Mediated Design, Virtual Reality techniques, Heritage
Conservation, and Integrated Design Approaches. On the other hand, Hard Skill topics include
Computer Graphics, Computer Aided Drafting, Digital Media and Representation, Augmented
Reality techniques, History of Modern Architecture and Art, Heritage Recording, Close-Range
photogrammetry, Digital Image Metrology, 3D Data Acquisition, Virtual Object Reconstruction,
Dr. Samer Al -Ratrout CURRICULUM VITAE Page 3 of 25
Remote Optical Sensing, Remote Recording, Building Construction, Design Representation, and
Construction Drawing skills and Protocols
Some topics integrate both ends of skills like Architectural Design Studio, Mixed Reality
techniques, Digital Architecture, Generative Design, Sustainability and Green Practice, Lighting
Design, Building Technology, and Building Information Modeling.
Experimental teaching methods are adopted and developed to target employing innovative
pedagogic approaches to motivate development of skills. The methods are supported by various
novel technologies in the classroom including web-based interacting, virtual education and
distance learning methods.
Philosophy statement of researching
Researching Islamic Heritage, Inherited Sustainability and Rethinking Creativity:
In Islamic Heritage, the research area incorporates investigating the inherited body of
Knowledge. This includes conservation philosophies, Regulations, Charters, Pedagogies,
Approaches, Strategies, Best Practices, Procedures, and Management. It targets also adopting and
developing appropriate contemporary procedures for soft and hard Documentation of Heritage.
This includes Information Modeling, 3D Digital Recording, Erosion Quantifying, Deterioration
Monitoring, Digital Simulating, Virtual Assessments, Virtual Reconstructing, Augmented
Displaying, Exploring and Exhibiting.
Focusing on Inherited Sustainability, the research area involves investigating heritage to
support developing contemporary Green Built-Environment Concepts. This involves Pedagogic
Approaches, Rating Systems, Best Practice Trends, Legislations, Implementation Methods,
Sustainability Information Modeling and Public Participation Strategies, Public Motivation tactics,
as well as stakeholders Engagement and Awareness Generating.
The research in this domain considers different aspects of life-cycle for the built
environment, starting with creation philosophies, and going through concepts, evolution,
simulation, construction, performance, management, maintenance and ends with maintaining
collective human experience through physical preservation or physical demolition. It considers
also the associated preserving, documenting, disposing or recycling processes and procedures.
In rethinking creativity, the research area involves revealing the essence of inherited
cultural legacies. These learned lessons are employed for introducing innovative approaches of
investigation and comprehension. The approaches are employed to understand the ever-evolving
processes of creative thinking, designing and creating of the Built-environment.
In this domain, the employed research methods support introducing and integrating best
practices guidelines including emergent theories of investigating, as well as grasping gains from
heritage milestones, markers and pointers.
Philosophy statement of professional practice
Involving Engineering Professional Practice:
In professionally practicing architectural consultation and projects management,
I realized the critical role and the vital involvement of the client in the Engineering
Creation Process. With this awareness, my knowledge and experience are developed to actively
provide affirmative, realistic, superior and proficient support to engage clients in decision
providing. This support is employed to facilitate realizing and envisioning the client’s aspirations
while appreciating and sustaining the inherited environment, professional concerns, and heritage.
In this regard, my professional experience is developed through researching while
practicing. My practice domain includes Architectural Design, Architectural Engineering, Urban
Design, Heritage Recording, Urban Planning, Graphical Representation, and Project Management
in Jordan, Egypt, KSA and USA.
Dr. Samer Al -Ratrout CURRICULUM VITAE Page 4 of 25
For the professional society, my efforts are building towards spreading Architectural
Consciousness among local architects and engineers’ societies through pursuing memberships and
professional affiliations.
Philosophy statement of serving cultural diversity
Targeting Multi-Disciplinary Aspects developed in Diverse Cultural environments:
Realizing the vital role of the Public Community in the Engineering Creation and collective
acceptance, I target public community engagement and involvement in the process. This
involvement includes groups with diverse cultures, geographic locations, different disciplines and
mutual concerns.
In this scope, my experimental research efforts are progressed through engaging pedagogic,
professional, and communal affiliations. These efforts are progressed until now through
establishing networks with concerned Universities, Schools, Professional Societies, Associations,
NGOs, Task-Groups, Virtual Societies, and Professional Boards and Councils in Jordan, KSA,
USA, German-Jordanian University, and Egypt.
These contributions are intentionally spent on supporting the communal efforts to elevate
different communities’ awareness and to expose the global and local benefits of employing green
and environment-friendly practices. The significance of appreciating the architectural heritage and
collective human experiences is also introduced to support this awareness.
Philosophy statement for Architecture domain future
Future Plans
For future research efforts, my plans are to invest my gained knowledge and experience in
the Arabic and Islamic regions to narrow and focus research work into deeply explore Islamic art
and architecture.
Other plan is to continue seeking comprehension of the values and ethics behind the
continuous heritage and culture to gain benefits for humanity better future and welfare. This will
be supported by my profound understanding of Arabic literature, Islamic history, architecture,
character, and culture.
Moreover, the similarity and contradiction will be traced with my research key arguments
of Innovative verses Heritage, Intervention verses Prevention and, Natural verses created. These
arguments will still be within the key domains of Multidisciplinary Sciences and in relation to the
local diverse cultures of this domain, and in relation to time. The efforts will be for the benefits of
the target groups of Students, Clients, Professional Societies and, Public Communities.
This mission is expected to produce beneficial knowledge to comprehend the correlation
between Islamic Regions Ideology (the individual), culture (the society), the built environment
(architecture) for the benefit of the human global production and concern (humanity civilization).
