Halekas is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Iowa. Dr. Halekas studies plasma physics in the interplanetary medium and the environments of planets and moons. Recent research topics include the near-surface plasma sheath above the surface of airless bodies, basic processes and sources of instabilities in plasma wakes, plasma interactions with sub-ion inertial scale magnetic fields, magnetic reconnection in the Martian magnetotail, and the composition and dynamics of the tenuous lunar atmosphere. Dr. Halekas has worked with data from spacecraft, including Polar, Wind, Lunar Prospector, Mars Global Surveyor, and ARTEMIS, throughout his career, and is active in designing and building space plasma instrumentation, including silicon semiconductor detectors and electrostatic analyzers. He is the instrument lead for the Solar Wind Ion Analyzer for MAVEN, instrument lead for the SWEAP-SPAN electron instruments for Solar Probe Plus, acting deputy PI for ARTEMIS, a Guest Investigator on LADEE, and the lead plasma investigator for the NASA Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute DREAM2 team. Dr. Jasper S. Halekas is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Iowa. Dr. Halekas studies plasma physics in the interplanetary medium and the environments of planets and moons.
