DETAILS OF INNOVATIONS/CONTRIBUTIONS IN TEACHING & RESEARCH:
TEACHING:
Having been trained by world renowned Professor John E. Halver on Fish Nutrition and Feed Technology at the School of Fisheries, University of Washington, USA, I reoriented the syllabi related to Fish nutrition, introduced teaching of Feed Technology and started imparting advanced knowledge on Feed formulation and techniques of preparing Semi-moist diets, Compressed dry pellets, Extruded dry pellets, Crumbles, Flax feed, Rolled pellets and Micro-encapsulated diets at Diploma and Post graduate levels. Development of models of feed manufacturing plants, hatcheries and intensive culture systems have been introduced by me long back in the year 1992. Induced breeding technique was demonstrated to the students for the first time by me. I am actively engaged in imparting technical know-how to the fish farmers by showing them the films on methods of fish culture and equipping them with the methods of on-site feed formulation and its proper dispensing into the culture system.
RESEARCH: Due to ever increasing demand for high quality protein food, a need has been felt to meet this increasing demand through aquaculture as the wild stock has been exhausted due to overexploitation of the natural resources. The main constraints in augmenting the production through aquaculture is the lack of data on the essential macronutrients like protein and the essential amino acids.
I initiated research in the area of fish nutrition about two and a half decade ago being closely associated initially with an internationally acclaimed Fish Nutritionist, Prof. John E. Halver at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA and later during my extensive collaborative research programmes with the same laboratory. My pioneering contribution is the dynamics of protein turnover, nutritional efficacy of oilcakes and animal wastes, feasibility of replacing fishmeal, effects of ration size on growth, quantitative amino acid requirements of Indian major carps and catfishes. A nutritionally balanced diet in terms of protein and amino acids can be formulated using the data generated by me on these aspects in a more cost-effective and eco-friendly manner. Data generated on better management practice particularly in terms of the amount of feed to be allocated will also help in reducing the nitrogenous load in aquaculture and cut the operational expenditure directly. All these information generated by me which are published in high rated international journals, if considered by the feed manufacturers will add to more proteinaceous supplements to the diet of the people on a more economic and environment-friendly manner. I have developed a number of cost-effective quality protein feed formulae for the commercial production of Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala, Catla catla, Heteropneustes fossilis and the formulae are being reassessed for their performance in out-door ponds which would be then processed for getting patented. This monumental work will

give a new fillip to fish culture which could not attain its full potential for the lack of above basic information on Indian cultivable fish species. Publication of my research papers in the journals of international repute is the ample testimony for my outstanding contribution to the existing knowledge.
Hence, the science here would directly add to the food security and will help in alleviating the protein calorie malnutrition which has become a global challenge. These are the most innovative contributions by me as most part of the world is facing the protein calorie malnutrition which has become a critical health issue world-wide.

DETAILS OF PARTICIPATION IN FIELD OUTREACH ACTIVITIES:
For the last 25 years I am solving the problems of fish farmers. Most of the farmers come to me with their problems related to water management, disease and feeding. I provided remedial measures and imparting training to the fish farmers of Aligarh region in above areas. The main problem the farmers facing is the poor growth of fishes which is because of the lack of knowledge about the feeding management. I have equipped them with the skills of preparing on-farm feeds and the methods of their proper dispensing into the culture system. This has resulted to the fast growth of fishes fetching them more profit. A number of cost-effective feed formulae developed by me have been passed on to the farmers for their benefits.

CURRENT RESEARCH PROGRAMS
Successfully completed the project sanctioned by Department of Science
and Technology, Government of India under FIST program. Nutritionally
balanced practical feeds for mass production of Indian culturable carps
are developed. Nutrition Research Laboratory headed by me has filled a
long standing gap in generating significant information on the
indispensable amino acid requirements of Indian major carps. Since
studies conducted so far have been limited to the requirement estimates
for only few amino acids of the Indian major carps, there is a dire need to
further extend the study on remaining indispensable amino acids
requirements. Our research group is also conducting feeding trials to
determine vitamin requirements to develop vitamin premix for inclusion in
the diets. This vital array of information will immensely boost our ongoing
efforts to intensify fish production.
