Since beginning my faculty appointment at Ohio State University (OSU) in 2014, I have built a research group that is integrating engineering technology with cancer research with the purpose of bridging the gap between in vitro and in vivo research. Microfabricated devices can provide cultured cells with a microenvironment similar to that in vivo, including the correct extracellular matrix (ECM) composition, chemical species, associations with other cells, and mechanical signals. These extrinsic cues can all be specified and controlled to mimic actual tissue microanatomy, but it is also relatively straightforward to apply controlled perturbations not possible in vivo. Moreover, the microsystems that my group has developed are readily amenable for incorporating novel molecular and genetic approaches, force probes, and imaging and detection techniques through collaborations with biomedical scientists, physical scientists,

and engineers. Using this interdisciplinary approach, my group aims to elucidate the physical and chemical (or physicochemical) processes that underlie different pathophysiological conditions. Furthermore, we wish to leverage our microsystems approach as tumor disease models to test for new therapies and understand the mechanisms that confer resistance to current therapies. Collectively, my research accomplishments provide evidence of innovative synergy between engineering and biology to put forth conceptual advances in biomedical research. My research efforts are directly synergistic with my primary education and outreach initiatives, which aims to increase the pipeline of engineering students contributing to cancer research. These efforts are supported by a NSF CAREER grant awarded to me and is buoyed by the strong appeal that cancer research has as a top priority societal as an avenue for attracting, retaining, and promoting resilience with engineering students with an emphasis on students from underrepresented groups. My efforts towards promoting diversity in engineering are achieved through a series of initiatives that start at the middle and high school level and proceed to the senior undergraduate level while also engaging the local community. In addition, I developed a senior undergraduate/graduate-level technical elective titled “Engineering Principles in Cancer.” This course was first offered in the Spring 2015 semester and continues to be offered annually. For the Spring 2018 offering, this course became the first one that was cross-listed in three engineering departments (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering) and taught by a solo instructor. Collectively, this course instills that cancer biology and research is not just the domain of biomedical scientists but can also prominently involve students from all of the engineering disciplines with potential for significant impact. I also have a strong emphasis in training and fellowship writing, both at the graduate and undergraduate-level. Two of my graduate students have received OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center Pelotonia Graduate Fellowships (Avendano – 2017 and C.W. Chang – 2017) and one of my students has received an OSU Presidential Fellowship (Akbari – 2018). In addition, my undergraduate students have received multiple national accolades, including two Goldwater Scholarships (Spychalski – 2017 and Zhang – 2019), a NSF Graduate Research Fellowship while an undergraduate in my lab (J. Chang – 2018), an Amgen Scholars Program at the University of Tokyo recipient (Zhang – 2018), and a NIH Summer Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program Fellow (Enders – 2017). My undergraduate students have also received over a dozen OSU fellowships and scholarships based on their research in my lab that has totaled ~$81,000 awarded to them to support their education.
