INTERNSHIP APPOINTMENT

June 1991 – June 1992 This was a 12 month rotating House Officer Post, held at the

Princess Basma Teaching Hospital, the largest referral centre

in the north of Jordan.

This post provided experience in general and subspecialty

medicine (4 months); general surgery (3 months), obstetrics

and gynaecology (2 months), paediatrics (2 months), accident

and emergency (1 month) and one elective month in

pathology.

GASTROINTESTINAL AND LIVER PATHOLOGY EXPERIENCE:

During my training in Glasgow I had the privilege to work with well-known

authorities in the field of GI and Liver Pathology like Professor RNM MacSween

and Professor Fred Lee, where I become more interested in these specific and

challenging areas of pathology.

Between March 2000 and April 2001, I have undertaken a specific training in GI

and Liver pathology. Most of this period was spent at the pathology department in

Glasgow Royal Infirmary. This hospital is the specialist hospital for this service in

west of Scotland and has five upper GI surgeons, four lower GI surgeons ,two

pancreatic surgeons, three specialist gastroenterologists, and two lead consultant

GI pathologist. This enabled me to have a wide experience in handling and

reporting all kind of GI, liver and pancreatic specimens and biopsies.

I was also involved in preparation and presentation of a number of GI clinic-

pathological meetings that take place on weekly basis.

For this purpose I have also arranged a rotation round the leading UK and

international experts in GI and liver pathology in the United Kingdom.

I have spent two weeks in Edinburgh with Professor David Harrison discussing

liver pathology with a particular emphasis on liver transplantation. A further three

weeks was spent in Newcastle with Professor Alistair Burt who is an

international expert in Hepatopathology.

Three weeks were also spent in Leeds with Professor MF Dixon who is a well-

known international GI pathologist. A further week was spent with Professor

Bryan Warren in Oxford who is a leading pathologist in upper GI pathology and

Barrett’s disease in particular. After starting my post at Department of Pathology &

Laboratory Medicine in Jordan University of Science & Technology and King

Abdullah University Hospital I worked as a lead consultant in GI & Liver pathology

where participated and lead all relevant multidisciplinary meetings, research

activities, and reported or consulted on the difficult biopsies and specimens from

inside and outside the hospital.

In 2004 i started with other colleagues the Gastrointestinal Group (GIG) through

the Arab Division of the International Academy of Pathology.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE:

During my training in Jordan I was involved in undergraduate practical classes for

medical and dentistry students and lectures to nursing and medical technology

students.

At the Royal Infirmary, I have been involved in the teaching of medical students,

including taking tutorial groups and practical sessions.

I have also undertaken the short programme to become a facilitator in the new

(problem-based learning) undergraduate medical curriculum in Glasgow

University.

At the moment and as a Chairman and Associate Professor of Pathology I am fully

involved in undergraduate teaching for medical, dentistry and pharmacy students.

I have been coordinating the respiratory and Hematopoietic modules for the last 8

years.

I’m also supervising the post graduate training programme at the Pathology

department in JUST where regular teaching sessions including slide seminars,

journal clubs, and presentations are held.

Five years ago I have initiated with other pathology chairman colleagues the

Jordan School of Pathology where the different country departments host a

regular monthly meeting to present interesting and educational cases for the

trainees.

Since 2007 I was honoured to chair the Arab School of pathology which is the

main training and educational arm of the Arab Division of the International

Academy of Pathology (IAP).

Through this floating school, I have managed so far to organise about 12

workshops in different Arab countries. Some of these schools were sponsored by

the British Division of the IAP.

The Arab Board of Pathology has been initiated in 2010 and since that time I am

honoured to be the Secretary of the Board and active member of the examination

committee.
