The “Chemists Online” Self-study Award Scheme
1. Introduction
“Chemists Online” is a collaborative project between local universities and secondary schools
funded by the Quality Education Fund. Leading by Lok Sin Tong Young Ko Hsiao Lin
Secondary School and Hong Kong Virtual University, the project had organised 18 seminars
for secondary school students in the 2011/12 and the 2012/13 school years. The seminars
cover a wide range of chemistry topics, including synthetic polymers, gastronomy,
nanomaterials and food chemistry, etc. All the seminars were delivered by experts from
local universities. The contents of the seminars were designed to link with the senior
secondary Chemistry curriculum and further extend the reach to the latest advances in
chemistry.
The award scheme is developed from the contents of the aforementioned seminars and other
related resources, with Dr. CK MAK, the school head of Lok Sin Tong Young Ko Hsiao Lin
Secondary School, as the advisor.
2. Aims
- To enhance students’ scientific literacy
- To encourage students to take initiative to learn and pursue more knowledge
- To cultivate students’ interest in chemistry
- To facilitate students to understand the interconnection between science, technology,
society and environment.
3. Target participants and enrolment
Students taking Senior Secondary Chemistry or Combined Science (Chemistry Part) are
welcome. Students should apply via schools. Only one application form is needed for each
school.
4. Contents of the seminars
The seminars will be disseminated through an e-Learning Open Platform (eLOP; URL:
http://hkvu.hk/hkvu/cosas/), which is developed and hosted by Hong Kong Virtual University.
The participating students will be provided with login information to access and attend the
seminars online and engage in the online exercises related to the seminars. The 18 seminars
will be released by batches. The first batch will be released in early 2014 and the whole
award scheme will be completed on 15 August 2014.
The topics for the 18 seminars are as follows.

Mathematical Olympiad 2016 Logo Design Competition’ (‘the Competition’).
Details
2. The International Mathematical Olympiad is a renowned global mathematics
competition for secondary school students, and has been held each year in a different country
since 1959 with the aim of providing a platform for exchange and contest for young
mathematical talents around the world. The International Mathematical Olympiad Hong Kong
Committee will host the 57th International Mathematical Olympiad in Hong Kong in July
2016 and the Education Bureau will be a supporting organisation. It is estimated that more
than 100 countries will participate in the event.
3. To promote the awareness of mathematics education in society through this
opportunity and to enable more students to participate in this event in various ways, the
Organising Committee of the 57th International Mathematical Olympiad 2016 (‘the
Organising Committee’) now holds the Competition and invites all secondary school students
in Hong Kong to submit logo designs for the event. The champion design will be used as the
official logo of the 57th International Mathematical Olympiad 2016. Winners will also be
awarded with trophies, book coupons ($7,000 for the champion, $5,000 for the first runner-up,
$3,000 for the second runner-up and $1,000 for the honourable mention), books and
certificates.

Chinese text, in A4 format, with the name of the school and the title of the project
as the file name (e.g. ABC_Secondary_School_Magic_Square.doc). If the file is
larger than 8 MB, the written report must be broken into smaller files so that each
file is not larger than 8 MB. Each written report must be submitted together with
the “Information Sheet” (Appendix 11a). The “Information Sheet” must be in MS
Word format, with the name of the school and the title of the project plus “_info” as
the file name (e.g. ABC_Secondary_School_Magic_Square_info.doc). Each
