WORK EXPERIENCE:
Postgraduate residency programme in Orthopaedics (March 2001-June 2004):
I gained experience in primary and definitive management of fractures. Learnt concepts of closed and
surgical management of fractures, dislocations, compound injuries, spinal trauma etc. I operated and
assisted a variety of spinal surgeries. I assisted lot of joint replacements, surgeries related to paediatric
Orthopaedics and a few arthroscopies and deformity corrections.
Consultant orthopaedic surgeon at a multispeciality hospital in an underserved area of Gujarat state –
India (July 2004 – July 2005).
I started Orthopaedics department in a 100 bedded hospital run by a charitable trust in a peripheral town
of about 1 lac population. I managed a variety of cases including vehicular, industrial and agricultural
trauma. I performed more then 150 surgeries independently.
Specialty training in Orthopaedic Oncology (July 2005 – May 2007):
I worked as a clinical fellow in Orthopaedic oncology service – Tata Memorial Hospital – Mumbai, India. My
consultants were Dr. Ajay Puri and Dr. M.G.Agarwal. Under their guidance, I gained valuable experience in
management of bone and soft tissue tumors. I was involved in more then 500 tumor surgeries in those 22
months since my appointment as a fellow either as an assistant or as primary surgeon. I have learnt
concepts of megaprosthetic reconstructions around knee, shoulder and hip. I am now experienced in using
customized endoprosthesis including imported systems like GMRS, Stanmore implants and ISIQU. I was
also exposed to variety of intercalary resections of long bones and reconstructions using allografts or
biological methods like vascularised fibula & tibialisation of fibula. I assisted/did arthrodesis at knee, ankle
and wrist for variety of disorders. I was fortunate to assist in pelvic surgeries including internal and external
hemipelvectomies and sacral resections and curettage, as it was being quite commonly done at Tata
Hospital. I am familiar with rotationplasties as I have witnessed more then 20 rotationplasties. I have
gained valuable experience in treatment of GCTs. I also got experience in treatment of skeletal metastasis
and extremity soft tissue sarcomas. I have performed many percutaneous, CT guided and open biopsies.
Tata Memorial Hospital is a high volume center and on an average, we used to see around 150 patients
(including new patients, references and follow up) in OPD every week. As a fellow, my duties also included
video assisted counseling of the patients undergoing surgery and to discuss possible complications, future
consequences and financial aspects. I had also been looking after data collection, updating follow up
details, maintaining audits and coordinating ongoing prospective rendomised trials in the service.
Assistant Professor at GCRI (May 2007 – June 2014)
Since May 2007, I have been working as Assistant Professor at Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute (GCRI),
in Orthopaedic Oncology service. GCRI is situated in Ahmedabad city. It is the largest regional cancer center
for the state of Gujarat. It is a 600 bedded dedicated cancer hospital and is a part of Government civil
hospital which is the biggest hospital of Asia. GCRI is a high volume center and I am practicing and
implementing the concepts which I have learnt at Tata Memorial Hospital. During these 7 years, I
performed more than 1200 major surgeries in the department including variety of limb conservation,
ablative and palliative surgeries.
Private practice venture
First ever exclusive Orthopedic Oncology clinic in private sector started in May 2010 by me. This is the
only clinic in the whole state of Gujarat which is dedicated to treat the patients with musculo – skeletal
neoplasia. I have performed more than 1800 tumor surgeries in private sector since the clinic has been
started. The results have been comparable to the international data.
