bility ofSMZ in water. The in vitro release ofSMZ in the presence ofdifferent generations ofleffamine®cored PAMAM type dendrimerswas slower than pure SMZ dissolved in rnethanol, Anti-bacterialactivity of SMZ in dendrimer solution higher than the pure SMZdissolved in dimethylsulfoxide(OMSO). The results indicated thatjeffamine®cored PAMAM type dendrimers could be used for drugdelivery applications under suitable conditions.doi: 10.1 016jj.copbio.2011.0S.423

Today the antioxidant properties of plants with fewer sideeffects were interested. In this research, the antioxidant activitiesof Hypericum extract by lipid peroxidation, phenolic determinationand frap method were evaluated. The plant was collected from FarsProvince and plant extraction was obtained using ethanol. Lipidperoxidation was done using ferric thiocyanate method, pheno-lic compounds determined by Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and in frapmethod TPTZ was used. Inhibition of lipid peroxidation of Hyper-icum extract, BHT,Vit Cwere S9.17%, 66.9% and 64.06% respectivelyin tenth day. The amount of phenolic compounds in Hypericumextract was 0.02 mgjg as gallic acid equivalents (GAE). In Frapmethod, the reduction potential of extract was higher than con-trol (which had not plant extract). Hypericum extract possessedantioxidant activity specially inhibition of lipid peroxidation.doi: 10.1 016jj.copbio.2011.0S.424

The study of plant responses to abiotic stress and stress toler-ance mechanisms is a very active field in plant biology research, due to its unquestionable academic interest, but also be cause abi-otic stress conditions (mostly drought and high soil salinity) are

the major causes reducing crop yields worldwide. Several con-served mechanisms of res pons e have been defined at the cellularlevel, based on the control of ion homeostasis, the maintenance ofosmotic balance, the synthesis of'protective' metabolites and pro-teins, or the activation of antioxidant systems. Paradoxically, mostofthese studies have been performed using stress-sensitive modelspecies - such as Arabidopsis thaliana - under laboratory or green-house artificial conditions. As a complementary approach, we areinvestigating the mechanisms of tolerance in wild plants adaptedto stress in their natural habitats. For this, we are determining thelevels of different biochemical markers of specific stress responsepathways (accumulation ofions, osmolytes, chemical antioxidants, etc.) in plants growing in the field, with the aim to correlate theirspatial and temporal patterns ofvariation with the specific environ-mental conditions - soil properties, climatic parameters - of theplants.

In this study, we will review the principles underlying theconcepts of plant tissue culture techniques which deal with thebuilding-blocks of agriculture, horticulture, and the food industries.Plant tissue culture techniques are one of the important biotech-nological tools that have found wide application around the world.Although numerous strides have been accomplished with fruit, agronomic and vegetable species and cultivars, this study will focuson the tissue culture techniques of pistachio and almond as modelsystem. Already, commercially important applications of micro-propagation such as organogenesis (the induction ofaxillary andadventitious shoots, temporary immersion systems (TIS) and thincell layer (TCL) technology), somatic embryogenesis, micrograft-ing of vegetables, fruits and ornamentals have begun to appear inthe market-places of America, japan and some European countries. Our work of over 20 years experience will be presented in relationnot only to past accomplishments, but also with presenting newertechnologies and developments that may provide so me challeng-ing ideas to both newcomers and specialists, and even old handsin tissue culture techniques to become the new wave ofthe futurefor commercial exploitation of plants.doi: 10.1 016jj.copbio.2011.0S.426
