How to go about itHow to go about it

Input from WP1 Input the DRAFT Roadmap of the PRC Scientific administrators (National Funding

Agencies) Scientific community Expertise (Workshops) Connection with ASTRONET, CERN/ESA/ESO

Major events for the RoadmapMajor events for the Roadmap Starting workshop: Valencia 7/8 November 2006

– Presentation and first discussion of the PRC draft roadmap

– Draft structure:• 1st day morning:

– General presentation of the proposal, NSF/DOE,Astronet, EU

• 1st day evening:– 7 thematic working groups

• 2nd day – Restitution and preliminary conclusions

2 more workshops in 07 and 08 – Also smaller thematic workshops

Milestone: A roadmap for Astroparticle and related R&D July 2008

Partial alignment of funding for APP in Europe

–Common action plan and agreements on funding of

large projects

–Common R&D calls

–Partial alignment of funds for APP

Turning a Roadmap to an Action planTurning a Roadmap to an Action plan

•Can we prioritize ?

•With multiannual projection of ressources available?

•Decision points and milestones?

•Transform it in an « action plan »?

Rare document from PPARC

Setting up cooperation agreements on existing infrastructuresSetting up cooperation agreements on existing infrastructures

A series of large infrastructures in Europe has developed in parallel:

– Underground labs (Gran Sasso, Fréjus, Camfranc, Boulby,…)

– Gravitational antennas VIRGO/GEO,

– Cherenkov telescopes HESS/MAGIC/VERITAS,

– Neutrino telescopes ANTARES/NEMO/NESTOR,

– High energy cosmic rays AUGER,

– Dark matter searches (at least 6 different projects)

– Double beta decay experiments.

Establish cooperation agreements, à posteriori linking, towards multisite common governance

– 6 thematic workshops from July 2008 to July 2009

Existing instances of « alignment » and the future Existing instances of « alignment » and the future

– Common virtual pot: example AUGER • BUT need more inter-european coordination, eg for

AUGER NORTH, speak with one voice, one evaluation committee, in order to increase the real inter-european coordination

– Real common pot: example EGO • True real common pot financed 50% INFN 50% CNRS,

forthcoming participation of NIKHEF

• Distribution of funds for R&D and upgrades by an international committee

• Final word by an interagency council of administration

– In the future: A common pot for overarching R&D • (photodetection, low radioactivity techniques etc)

• ERANET+

Transversal tasks of ASPERA

–Database and common electronic infrastructure

–Website

–Outreach to policy makers

–Extension of the network to new partners

Common electronic infrastructureCommon electronic infrastructure

Development of joint electronic communication tools and portal:– Website (not yet) www.aspera-eu.org– Authentification– Database of projects and people– Archiving and dissemination of all astroparticle related documents– Follow-up of the progress of projects by European managers and/or

evaluators– Means of information on open calls and other opportunities for the

researchers– A subscription system for the restricted use of the database and

sharing work (wiki-like) facilities

Outreach Outreach ( ( CERNCERN ) )

Single European press officer for astroparticle at the model of LHC and ILC, located at CERN, target group policy makers

Organize media events around « open national days »/workshops

Organize an European Astroparticle Physics Forum Planned participation to the launch of FP7 with an exhibition

on Astroparticle physics (with ASTRONET)– The 7 themes– Importance of the field for outreach – Industrial spinnofs

More general outreach – European wide special master classes – Promotion of web-site based events

Extension of the network Extension of the network ( ( BMBFBMBF ) )

•Effort to increase the coverage of the network to most european countries with astroparticle physics

•Poland entry imminent

•Responsible: T. Bergohefer deputy coordinator of ASPERA

ConclusionConclusion

ASTROPARTICLE LARGE INFRASTRUCTURES ARE NOW AT THE LEVEL OF FUNDING OF PARTICLE PHYSICS ASTROPHYSICS AND NUCLEAR PHYSICS LARGE INFRASTRUCTURES.

SHOULD BE READY TO PARTICIPATE AT THE TIME OF THE WORLD DISTRIBUTION OF LARGE INFRASTRUCTURES (ca 2010-2012)

ASPERA COULD BE THE INSTRUMENT OF THE PREPARATION FOR EUROPE AND COORDINATION WITH THE OTHER REGIONS OF THE WORLD

LAST BUT NOT LEAST A BALANCE BETWEEN LARGE SCALE INFRASTRUCTURES AND DARING SMALLER PROJECTS SHOULD BE SOUGHT
