~ New standards for children and young people with acute illness

The RCGP and the RCN have developed jointly a new set of standards Facing the Future Together for Child Health 2015. These aim to ensure there is always high quality diagnosis and care early in the unscheduled pathway and to reduce unnecessary attendances at the emergency department and admissions to hospital by providing care closer to home. They aim to bring specialist child health expertise directly into general practice where the needs of the child or young person are known and build connections between primary and secondary care. http://www.rcpch.ac.uk/improving-child-health/better-nhs-children/service-standards-and-planning/facing-

~ Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has published Polycystic ovary syndrome: what it means for your long-term health (PCOS). This patient information guidance covers: symptoms of PCOS; causes of PCOS; how PCOS is diagnosed; what PCOS could mean for long-term health and how to reduce risks. It describes how, for many women, symptoms and the long term effects of PCOS can be managed by eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The information doesn’t cover specific treatment options for PCOS. https://www.rcog.org.uk/en/patients/patient-leaflets/polycystic-ovary-syndrome-pcos-what-it-means-for-your-long-term-

~ Diabetes and mediterranean diet - randomized controlled trial For newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes, a low-carbohydrate Mediterranean diet may delay need for medication and improve chance of remission compared to a low-fat diet ▪ A Mediterranean diet resulted in fewer diabetes medications than a low-fat diet for up to 8 years, which could reduce healthcare costs. ▪ A diet higher in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, fatty fish, low-fat dairy products, nuts and monounsaturated oils should be promoted in diabetes management. http://ebn.bmj.com/content/18/3/74.full.pdf+html

~ NICE Guidance - suspected cancer: recognition and referral NICE has published Suspected cancer: recognition and referral NG12. This guideline updates and replaces NICE clinical guideline CG27 (published June 2005). It offers evidence-based advice on the recognition of and referral for suspected cancer in children, young people and adults. New recommendations have been added about recognising suspected cancer and referral. The recommendations have been organised by symptoms and investigation findings, as well as by the site of suspected cancer. The guidance also updates and replaces recommendations 1.1.2 to 1.1.5 in Lung cancer (2011) NICE guideline CG121. http://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng12

~ NICE interventional procedure guidance - Venous thromboembolism The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has issued full guidance to the NHS in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland on Ultrasound enhanced catheter-directed thrombolysis for pulmonary embolism, in June 2015. http://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ipg524

~ NICE quality standards published June 2015 Pressure ulcers This quality standard covers the prevention, assessment and management of pressure ulcers in all settings, including hospitals, care homes with and without nursing and people’s own homes. It covers people of all ages: neonates, infants, children, young people and adults (including older people). More information: topic overview. http://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/qs89

Prostate cancer This quality standard covers the care of men referred to secondary care with suspected or diagnosed prostate cancer, and men having follow-up for prostate cancer in primary care. It does not cover the recognition and referral of men with suspected prostate cancer in primary care. This topic is expected to be covered by a quality standard on suspected cancer. More information: topic overview. http://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/qs91
