Principal’s Report Welcome to Term 2 Welcome back to term 2. I trust you and your family had an enjoyable holiday. We look forward to a number of special events occurring this term that will complement our teaching/learning programs. Important dates to remember are always listed at the end of each newsletter.
School Development Day The school teaching staff had a productive School Development Day on Monday 24 April with the Northern Beaches Learning Alliance groups of schools. The day involved professional learning activities presented by Ann McIntyre and Dan Haesler. Ann McIntyre is recognised nationally for her work on effective teaching and school improvement. Dan Haesler is an international keynote speaker who works with teachers and schools around student engagement, well‐being and growth mindset.
NAPLAN A reminder that students in year 3 and year 5 will sit for the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) on the following days next week:
Tuesday 9 May Language conventions and
writing tests
Wednesday 10 May Reading test
Thursday 11 May Numeracy test
ANZAC Service Thank you to Mrs Connell and the students who conducted our very moving school ANZAC services last Wednesday.
Special thanks goes to Charlie G, one of our school’s trumpeters, who played the Last Post beautifully.
Cross Country Last Thursday we had a very successful Cross Country running carnival. Thank you to Miss Kim Jones and Miss Laurissa Moore for organising years 3 – 6 and to Ms Alana Jones, Ms Renata Honour and Miss Rebecca Shelley for organising K‐2. Thank you also to all staff who assisted with the very early morning set up on John Fisher Park. Please see the results at the end of the newsletter.
Curly’s Coding Champion Congratulations to Jesse W from Year 5 who has won a coding competition. Jesse worked with two friends (including ex‐Curly student, Bailey P) to create a game in Scratch about being attacked by zombies on the way
to a friend’s house. The boys wrote all the code for the game and created their own artworks and sound effects. They were awarded first prize in the Sydney 10‐11 age group and were also global semi‐finalists in the DXC
Technology global competition. Check out Jesse’s game at https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/147634321/#player Well done, Jesse! What a fantastic achievement! All students at Curl Curl North PS have the opportunity to learn coding and those with a particular interest in coding can join Curly’s Code Club.
Building Upgrade Following on from the last newsletter, additional dates for information booths re the proposed school upgrade have now been listed on our school’s website under the heading ‘Capital Works Project’.
Updated information provided by the Department of Education about the project will continue to be published on the school’s website. There is also a link to an online survey on the website. The survey has been established to receive comments from members of the school and the broader community who are unable to attend any of the information booths.
All parents are encouraged to participate as the consultation on the proposed redevelopment continues.
Opportunity Class 2018 Towards the end of last term, students in year 4 were provided with a note detailing information regarding Opportunity Class placement for 2018. Please note that applicants need to register through the Department of Education’s High Performing Students Application website and these applications close on Friday 12 May 2017. If you require further information you are welcome to contact the school.

School News Dance Off Camp Last week Sofia A attended the Dance Off Camp for talented dancers at Springwood run by the DoE. It was a three day residential camp where the children participated in a variety of workshops from 9am to 5pm. This culminated in a performance for parents on the last afternoon.
With many fabulous, well‐known choreographers at the camp, it was an exciting and constructive few days.
Sofia was also awarded an “Excellence In Jazz” certificate for her outstanding efforts over the three days. Well done, Sofia!

Year 5 DanceSport Challenge Gala Night At the end of last term, year 5 held a DanceSport
Challenge Gala Night to showcase the skills they had
learnt during their ballroom dancing lessons in term 1.
After only eight, 40 minute lessons the students all
improved so much, not only with their dancing skills but
also their co‐operation, respect for one another and
interpersonal skills. We were so pleased to see so many
parents and family members enjoy the night and there
was not a free seat in the Youth Club Hall. Each class
performed three dances, the tango, cha cha cha and the
jive. A semi‐final and then finals were held for each
style of dance with two couples representing each class
in the semi‐final and then five couples competing in the
final. Congratulations to the following couples who won
each competition:
Tango Cha cha cha Laura S 5H Mackenzie R 5M John G 5H Jacob C 5M
Jive Chilli V 5P Cooper C 5P
Congratulations also to the following couples who won
the most improved award from each class:
5C‐ Leena G and Will B 5H‐ Josie S and Mattias WR 5J‐ Taya F and Tom J 5M‐ Angela M and Abe W 5P‐ Kate W and Olivier D

Neil Jensen, PSSA Co‐ordinator 3‐6 Cross Country Carnival With the sun shining, a great day was had by all at the 2017 Cross Country Carnival! Congratulations to all of the students who participated and tried their best. We are sure you had a fun day. A huge congratulations to Louella M who broke 8/9 years 2km cross country record. This record was previously held by Sienna C from 2012 with a time of 8:45.09. Louella now holds the new record of 8.44.64! Great work, Louella! Well done to Cook who were the winning House for the 3‐6 Carnival.

The feel of the country in the heart of the city
A day like our Cross Country Carnival could not go ahead without the help and assistance of teachers, students and parents. A huge thank you to the following people who helped our carnival run so smoothly:
To Maxine Gourley and the Gourley family for the
loan of their car
To the teachers who were at John Fisher Park
from 7am helping to mark the course and set up
the tents
To Sue Milner for acting as a course marshal for
the day
To the students who helped pack up the
equipment from the 3‐6 carnival and to those
who helped set up the equipment for the K‐2
carnival
To the parents who helped pack up all the tents
and pack the car at the end of the day
Kim Jones and Laurissa Moore 3‐6 Cross Country Carnival Organisers
K‐2 Cross Country Carnival The cross country event is a long held school tradition and many of us can still relate to that same moment of anticipation: your heart pounding as you anticipate the starter calling
"ready‐set‐go!" and racing off with the cheers of the school community in the background; a day that will probably always remain etched in your memory. We hope that everyone enjoyed this year's event and we would like to thank everyone who was involved. Thank you to the teachers who gave up their time to organise and support the day; thank you to the parents and friends who showed their support by attending the event, cheering us on, supporting the coffee van and rescuing Mrs Crawford from a rather unexpected and strong gust of wind! But thank you especially to all the children who participated‐ it makes us so proud to see such fine examples of good sportsmanship. We saw everybody 'having a go', cheering on one another, celebrating the achievements of others and taking pride in doing one's personal best. Congratulations to Cook, who were the overall winning house for the 2017 K‐2 Cross Country! This was closely followed by Phillip, then Flinders and Bass. We loved seeing you all push yourself to make it across that finish line which seemed so, so far away. We are very proud of you all.

P&C News Bye Election BBQ and Cake Stall 8th April 2017 The recent Manly Bye Election BBQ and cake stall, held at school on 8 April, was a great day with lots of locals coming into the school to vote and buy their mandatory sausage sandwich and freshly baked cakes.
Thank you to everyone who volunteered on the day either on the cake stall, cooking on the BBQ, running the guessing competition or serving in the canteen. Also thanks to those who were able to bake goods, collect and deliver the fresh bread rolls, loan their eskies, collect ice, gas bottles, the meat for the BBQ and assist with cleaning at the end of the day.
It really is a large collaboration to get the end result of raising funds for the school. The P&C greatly appreciates everyone’s help and support in planning the event and volunteering on the day.
Our end result was approx. $4000 (some small expenses are still to be confirmed).
I'd like to acknowledge some kind donations from local businesses, Amanda Naylor Photography for the guessing competition prize, Stocksy Mechanical for the sliced bread and soft drinks and Robert from Belle Property for the ice and bread rolls.
Also a special mention to the new fundraising committee members Stephanie England, Paula Cowan and Robert Killian. Also Justine Blood‐Scott from the school office and a special mention of thanks to Lynne Cooper who greatly assisted me in the lead up to the event and on the day.
