MEDIA INFORMATION

MEDIA SEATINGAn event/media bench has been constructed at the home end. The bench offers wireless Internet, electrical outlets and TV’s, as does the media room, should you wish to file from there.

MEDIA ROOM/LOUNGEThe media room is located on the north side of the lower arena level concourse. The media room will be open for pre-event practices on Friday. Beginning Saturday until the conclusion of the event it will open 30 minutes before the first draw of the day and close roughly one hour after the last draw.

The media room has electrical outlets, wireless Internet, a printer and television to assist in the production and distribution of media materials and media services.

INTERVIEW REGULATIONS/PROCEDURESYou will be required to fill out interview request forms, which will be available on the media bench and in the media room. Volunteers will be gathering the forms as the draw progresses and will hand them to requested players at the completion of their games. Players will be told they cannot leave the scrum area until they have fulfilled all requested interviews.

All post-game media interviews during the round robin will be conducted in a scrum format at ice level in a designated space adjacent to the media bench. All players have been instructed to exit through this area on their way to the dressing rooms. Every effort will be made to escort players to the specified area as quickly as possible after each draw.

For the final, arrangements may be made to offer a very brief scrum with the winner and/or loser, on or near the ice surface, prior to the closing ceremony.

DRAW STATISTICSAll scoring and statistical reports are produced and recorded by the World Curling Federation and available online only at https://worldcurling.org/events/wwcc2020/?page=results

ACCREDITATIONThe accreditation desk is on the lower concourse arena level in the north east corner.

All media badges issued for the World Women’s Curling Championship are non-transferable. Failure to follow this rule will result in forfeiture of your media credential.

TRANSPORTATIONShould you require courtesy transportation to and from the media hotel to CN Centre for each draw, please call 1-844-299-CURL (2875). You must have the appropriate media credential in order to utilize the VIP/Media transportation service.

TV NON-RIGHTS HOLDERS (CANADIAN MEDIA)TSN is the sole Canadian TV rights-holder for the 2020 World Women’s Curling Championship, thus no cameras/portable video devices from any other media affiliation are allowed inside the boards during morning, afternoon and evening draws.

However, in order to provide other stations and/or networks with an opportunity to get brief game/highlight footage, approved camera positions will be available at certain locations outside the boards around the perimeter or at various places on the concourse level or press box, provided your position at no time blocks the view of spectators nor presents a fire access hazard. Please ensure that your camera has no visible logo. If so, please cover it up.

You are allowed to air two minutes of game footage daily, provided the game footage is not from a game being televised as the feature game by TSN, in which case you must use their highlights with the appropriate credit.

The main media scrum takes place at ice level near the media bench. There will be an appropriate backdrop/signage noting the area. All players will pass by this area en route to their dressing rooms.

TV cameras must allow the media scrum to first interview any requested players before arranging individual interviews. However, cameras may be part of any scrum. For TV non rights-holders, you are allowed to air as much footage from the scrums as you wish.

When all games have been completed for any draw AND when TSN/World Curling TV has concluded its telecast and is off the air, you are allowed to do ‘stand-ups’ or interviews at ice level on the carpeted areas, near the scoreboards or even inside the boards, provided you are not disrupting the ice technicians as they prepare the surface for the next draw.

For brief live hits, if TSN/World Curling TV is not on the air, you will be able to do stand-ups on the concourse, seating areas, etc., providing any lighting requirements have been pre-approved. When TSN/World Curling TV is on the air, NO live hits are allowed.

FORMAT: Thirteen teams compete in a 12-game round robin. The top two teams in the standings advance directly

to the semifinals. The third through sixth ranked teams compete in qualification games (3 vs. 6; 4 vs. 5)

with the winners advancing to the semifinals. The semifinal winners play in the gold-medal game and

the losers play for bronze.

No tiebreakers will be played, so ties for playoff spots are to be broken based on head-to-head results,

and if that doesn’t resolve the tie, then the pre-game Last-Shot Draw distances will be used.

2020 WORLD WOMEN’S CURLING CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE PLAYED IN PRINCE GEORGE, B.C.

Following on the success of the 2018 event in North Bay, Ont., another first-time host city will welcome the world’s best women’s curling teams in 2020, it was announced jointly today by Curling Canada and the World Curling Federation.

The 2020 World Women’s Curling Championship will be played at the CN Centre in Prince George, B.C., from March 14-22; it’ll be the first time the city has hosted a World Curling Federation event.

“I am delighted to confirm the World Women’s Curling Championship 2020 will take place in Prince George, British Columbia, next season,” said Kate Caithness, President of the World Curling Federation. “It’s always pleasing to take our blue ribbon events to new places, with this being Prince George’s first time hosting. Following our most recent World Mixed Curling Championship being successfully held in Kelowna, British Columbia, I’m looking forward to the curling world returning to this beautiful part of the world.”

It will be the fourth world women’s curling championship contested in British Columbia, and the first since the 2008 event at Vernon, won by Jennifer Jones, who also prevailed in the 2018 World Women’s Championship in North Bay.

The 1998 world women’s championship was played in Kamloops, where Sweden’s Elisabet Gustafson captured gold, while Canada’s Marilyn Bodogh won the 1986 world women’s title in Kelowna.

“We’re thankful once again that the World Curling Federation has given us the opportunity to welcome the world to Canada, and we don’t take that responsibility lightly,” said Maureen Miller, Chair of Curling Canada’s Board of Governors. “I know the host committee in Prince George is eager to prove to the world that it can stage world-class events, and I have every confidence that the 2020 World Women’s Curling Championship will be successful in every sense of the word.”

The CN Centre opened in 1995 and can seat 5,582 in its hockey configuration. The arena is the home to the Western Hockey League’s Prince George Cougars.

“On behalf of City Council, it’s my pleasure to welcome the 2020 World Women’s Curling Championship to Prince George,” said Prince George Mayor Lyn Hall. “We are thrilled to host this premier event, and for the opportunity to showcase our community on the international stage. Thank you to the World Curling Federation and Curling Canada for recognizing that Prince George is an accomplished host city with world-class venues, volunteers, and experiences for athletes. We are excited to be a part of the global curling community and we look forward to hosting the world’s best women curlers in 2020!”

While it will be the first world championship in Prince George, it’s hardly the first major championship to be decided in The Spruce City. Most recently, the 2009 Road to the Roar Pre-Trials — deciding the final entries into the 2009 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings Canadian Curling Trials — were staged at the CN Centre. Nine years earlier, the arena played host to the 2000 Scott Tournament of Hearts, where home-province favourite Kelley Law came out on top, and went on to win gold at the 2000 World Women’s Championship in Glasgow, Scotland.

Prince George also hosted the 1987 Canadian Seniors, the 1979 Canadian Mixed and the 1961 Canadian Junior Men’s championships.

“We’re proud to be given this privilege of hosting the best women’s curling teams in the world next year,” said Glen Mikkelsen, vice-chair of the Prince George Host Committee. “The CN Centre is a world-class facility that will give these athletes a perfect setting for them to showcase their immense talent, and we’ll do everything we can as a host committee to ensure their trip to Prince George is memorable, on and off the ice.”

passionate community of curling volunteers and fans in Prince George, ready to go to work to make this the best World Women’s Championship ever.”

The world women’s championship began in 1979 in Perth, Scotland, and was contested separately from the men’s championship through 1988. During that time, the women’s event was held twice in Canada, in 1983 in Moose Jaw and 1986 in Kelowna.

In 1989, the championships were combined for the first time in Milwaukee, Wisc., and remained so through 2004. During that time, Canada first hosted the joint championships in 1991 in Winnipeg, followed by five Ford World Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships (Brandon, Man., 1995; Hamilton, 1996; Kamloops, 1998; Saint John, N.B., 1999 and Winnipeg, 2003).

Beginning in 2005, when the men’s and women’s world championships were separated once again, Curling Canada, known then as the Canadian Curling Association, agreed to alternately stage a men’s and women’s event in Canada each year.

Since then, the World Men’s has been held in Canada in Victoria (2005 and 2013), Edmonton (2007 and 2017), Moncton (2009), Regina (2011), and Halifax (2015), with the 2019 event set for March 30-April 7 in Lethbridge, Alta.

The World Women’s has been staged twice in Swift Current, Sask. (2010, 2016), in addition to 2006 in Grande Prairie, Alta., 2008 in Vernon., 2012 in Lethbridge, 2014 in Saint John, N.B. and the 2018 event in North Bay.

Canada has won a leading 17 women’s world titles since 1979; Sweden is next at eight.

OLYMPIC QUALIFICATIONCurling at the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 will comprise three competitions with ten National Olympic Committees in each – women’s, men’s and mixed doubles.

All three competitions will be played in the Ice Cube – also known as the Beijing National Aquatics Centre.

Mixed Doubles: 2-8 February 2022Women’s and Men’s: 9-20 February 2022

China qualifies, for each competition, automatically as the host.

Another seven places each will be offered to the National Olympic Committees, of the Member Associations of the World Curling Federation, who have gained the most qualifying points from the World Curling Championships in 2020, and 2021.

Member Associations are ranked at the women’s, men’s and mixed doubles world championships, and then Olympic Qualification Points will be awarded, according to The Rules of Curling, specifically Rules of Competition, C9. Team Ranking Procedure / Draw Shot Challenge.

POINTS ALLOCATIONEach season points are allocated to the Member Associations ranked from 1-13, in each women’s and men’s world championship, in the following order: 15, 13, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

For the mixed doubles, teams are ranked 1-20, therefore, the points allocation is as follows: 27, 23, 20, 18, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

QUALIFICATION EVENTSThe final two places in each event are then decided at Olympic qualification events. To compete in these events Member Associations must either host, have enough Olympic qualification points to enter or, for women and men, win through a pre-qualification event.

The women’s and men’s Olympic Qualification Event has eight National Olympic Committees each, meanwhile, the Mixed Doubles qualification event can have up to 16 competing.
