CURAPROX DENTAL SUMMER CAMP 20 - 26 August 2012 SPLIT “Individually trained oral preventive - iTOP” The ultimate request for prevention of periodontal diseases and their systemic consequences is efficient and atraumatic oral hygiene. Since not only every person is different, but also the situation in the one’s oral cavity is different, in order to have efficient and atraumatic oral hygiene, it must be individually adjusted to the given situation. Hence, every patient should be informed of the best possible means and best possible ways to maintain their own oral hygiene that is adjusted for the specific situation in their mouth. Individual approach also assumes adequate logistics for the patient, teaching them how to apply the means and methods involved in the process of changing habits and ways they were used to brush their teeth. It is a process, which takes time and effort of the patient, as well as from the doctor of dental medicine. Motivation of the patient is one of the duties we have, as doctors of dental medicine. Most basic means we have to recommend to our patients for maintenance of oral health are correct manual toothbrush and interdental toothbrush. Lecture will be about motivating the patient, how to choose a correct toothbrush for patient, how to choose correct interdental brush and what about flossing. Everything we learn theoretically in the lectures will be than practiced at the workshops, consisting of three major topics: 1. Interdental spaces workshop 2. Manual toothbrush and correct technique 3. Single toothbrush with “Solo”-technique Miljena Mia Girotto (born Oštrić), DDS, Msc, Specialist in Periodontology, Implantology - in 1996 completed Study of Dental Medicine at the University of Rijeka, Faculty of Medicine - in 2002 completed postgraduate study at the University of Zagreb, with the title Master of Science - in 2005 completed specialization in Periodontology both at University of Rijeka and University of Zagreb - in 2008 completed gIDE/UCLA Master program in Implantology, University of California, Los Angeles - during 2006 upon invitation stayed as a guest-visitor in Zurich, at Zentrum für Zahn-, Mund- und Kieferheilkunde der Universität Zürich - currently working on the Doctoral Thesis at the University of Zagreb - actively involved in scientific project run by Andrija Bošnjak, PhD, DDS, „Implant and regenerative management of advanced periodontitis“ - actively contributing at numerous international congresses, lecturing, doing seminars and workshops - from 1997 to 2009 has been working as scientific and clinical assistant in the Department of Periodontology at the University of Rijeka, Faculty of Medicine, Study of Dental Medicine, and as a clinical periodontologist on the Clinic of Dental Medicine in the Clinical hospital center of Rijeka. - since 2006 is in continuing educational program “iTOP – individually trained oral preventive” mentored by Jiri Sedelmeyer DDS, the author of iTOP-concept and his wife Lucie Kalouskova DDS, Top Mentor for the instructors. - in 2009. reaches the Top-level degree, and becomes one of the Gold-certificated Instructors with right to give lectures and educate by her own in the iTOP system in cooperation with Swiss-based firm Curaden. - during 2007 and 2008 was actively participating as lecturer and instructor of iTOP in the International Curaprox Student Camp-u in Eidfjord, Norway - during August 2010 as a member of international educational team (one of four Instructors along with Mr. and Mrs. Sedelmeyer) participated in educational iTOP program for Latin America in Chile. - during 2010 and 2011 has participated as Instructor and Lecturer in numerous iTOP-events in Croatia, Lithuania, Bosnia, Serbia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Switzerland….. - was the first editor of the first magazine for the Dental patients in Croatia - “Smile”; now still participating as an author - is vice-president of Croatian branch of World’s organization: WomenDentistsWorldwide: WDW – women dentists in Croatia - is translator for professional literature from English language to Croatian (magazine Dental Tribune International, chapters of the book in: Lindhe, Karring, Lang: Clinical Periodontology and Implant Dentistry, fifth, Croatian edition,….) - now working as a member of the team in three private praxis in Rijeka as specialist in Periodontology and Implantology

Tuesday : Workshops & lectures Dental Identification in Mass Disasters, Professor Hrvoje Brkić, DMD, PhD

Natural or man made catastrophes often result in

multiple casualties under circumstances that make

their identification difficult. The teeth, as the

hardest and most durable part of the human body,

serve as one of the most reliable elements in the

identification procedure. Their unique shape,

location, external morphological features,

histological components, as well as dental

restorations, represent key features in terminating

the identity of each body. In this lecture we present

dental identification in several mass disasters in

the world

Endodontics - the most common mistakes, Professor Silvana Jukić-Krmek

Endodontics is a very demanding branch of dental medicine. Diagnosis is often difficult due to the complexity of the symptoms, referred pain or possibility of "toothache" of non-odontogenic origin. Field of work in endodontics is inaccessible to the eye, with a large number of anatomical variations and possible complications during the treatment. Therefore, for successful endodontic treatment, in addition to general dental knowledge, require additional equipment, training and experience of the therapist. In this lecture the most common mistakes during endodontic treatment in general practice of dental medicine will be presented, in order to encourage the systematic approach to each case. The access cavity is the key that opens the door, and one of the most common errors encountered by endodontic specialists is unmatched access opening. Shape of access opening is in direct correlation with the anatomy endontic space. The consequences of poor access cavity, behind the infection in the off-corners, are unidentified root canals, broken instruments, ledge and fuosse route. Determining the working length today is usually carried out by electronic apex locators. Although are extremely easy to use, they are not used in all dental practices. The consequences of poorly determined working length can be a persistent infection within non-instrumented and unfilled root canal, "rest"-pulpitis and chronic irritation of the periapical tissues in case of overfilling. During instrumentation, possible errors are: separation of the instrument, use of inappropriate instrumentation techniques that ignore the anatomical characteristics of the canal, insufficient instrumentation that leaves vital or infected tissue, or excessive instrumentation that weakens the walls of the canal. Filling the channel should be long enough and compact with a material that does not irritate periapical tissue and dimensionally stable. In the final phase of endodontic treatment in post-endodontic reconstruction, there are a number of possible mistakes such as conservative treatment filling of teeth that require prosthetic supply, use of inappropriate and improper set posts, or inclusion of teeth with poor prognosis in extensive prosthetic work. Silvana Jukic Krmek is full professor in the Department of Endodontics and Restorative Dental Medicine. He has authored or co-authored 56 scientific papers, review

and professional papers in extenso, of which 25 cited in Current Contents. She actively participated in numerous international and domestic conferences.

The scientific work of Prof. Silvana Jukic Krmek mainly refers to the area of endodontics and the application of lasers in dentistry. She has participated in research of

immunohistological characteristics of healthy and inflamed pulp, the properties of materials for the root canal filling, the efficiency of solvents and laser for removal of

root canal filling. She also researched the application of laser and ultrasound in the preparation of the retrograde cavity, the temperature increase during operation with

a laser, and epidemiological investigations of quality of endodontic treatment and the prevalence of periapical processes in urban Croatian population.

Ozone) is a unstable gas made of three oxygen atoms with a cyclic

structure. There are several known effects of ozone on human body,

such as antimicrobial (bactericidal, virucidal, and fungicidal),

immunostimulating and biosynthetic (activation of the metabolism of

carbohydrates, proteins, lipids). Bio-oxidative therapy is a non-

medicamentous method of therapeutic action proved to be effective in

the treatment of different kind of inflammatory and degenerative

diseases. The antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and bio-stimulative

effect of bio-oxidative therapy may be used in the management of

diffferent dental indications such as caries, root canal treatment,

wound healing, gingtivitis, periodontitis, periimplantitis, viral and

fungal infections. Oxygen activation generator’s antimicrobial effect

has been tested in the treatment of wounds and lesions of the soft

tissues such as periodontal pockets, aphtae, herpes and fistulas, tooth

cavity and wound disinfection and muscle relaxation. When the

correct dose has been established, ozone can be used as a useful

therapeutic agent. The purpose of this lecture is to present a

successful clinical use of a high frequency ozone generator and bio-

oxidative therapy in different kind of inflammatory disease.

Direct aesthetic restorations, Professor Ivana Miletić

The development of composite resin materials enables placement of natural looking restorations and they are usually used for anterior and posterior tooth reconstruction. Composites can be made in a wide range of tooth colors allowing near invisible restoration of teeth. However, copying the natural color and reflection of a tooth is difficult. In the lecture, the new generation of composite resin materials based on nano technology (G-aenial) will be presented. These composite resin materials have high light scattering properties and chameleon effect which can be achieved with only single shade. For the anterior restorations, in order to gain good aesthetic result it is necessary to combine different colors to mimic the interproximal zone, dentin and enamel layer.

Info about Split :

Sunday : END

Split is a city in Central Dalmatia, Croatia. The city was originally built around the Diocletian palace (a palace/fort built for the retired Roman emperor Diocletian) where the locals sought refuge centuries ago. Wandering the historic centre of Split you can still clearly see the Roman walls, squares, and temples. Because of its ideal climate, with 2,800 hours of sunlight each year, local people have a few nicknames for Split: "The most beautiful city in the world"and "Mediterranean flower". Many famous Croatian sports people are born in Split, so locals often nicknamed their city as "The sportiest

city in the world".

Diocletian's Palace (UNESCO heritage site) - The historic centre of Split is built around the remains of this Roman palace. You only need to wander around to experience it but you can also pay to visit the excavated remains of the basement of the palace. The palace has well preserved main streets cardo and decumanus. Roman palace is enriched with some gothic and reinassance buildings which makes a perfect match. Palace has 4 monumental gates Porta Aurea (Zlatna vrata, Golden gate), Porta Argenta (Srebrna vrata, Silver gate),Porta Ferrea (Željezna vrata, Iron gate) and Porta Aenea (Mjedena vrata). It is probably the best preserved Roman palace in general.

St. Duje's cathedral - Originally built around 305 AD as a mausoleum of Roman emperor Diocletian's (the oldest cathedral building in the world). Cathedral is also a very beautiful mixture of Roman temple and Catholic church. It also has a beautiful belltower which provides you a great panoramic view of Split, nearby islands and Marjan hill.

Peristil square (Peristylium) - Main square of Diocletian's palace with well preserved Roman architecture.

Jupiter's temple - Ancient Roman temple which became St. John's church.

Two original Egyptian sphinxes- One is located on Peristil square, and the other in front of Jupiter's temple or St. John's church. They were brought from Egypt by Roman emperor Diocletian.

Riva is the main city promenade. Since 2007. Riva has a new, "modern" look, which is not accepted by most of the people.

Marjan - a hill situated on the west of Split. Marjan is an oasis for many people who look for a natural stress relief, a great place for long walks, jogging, and bike rides. Marjan's peak, Telegrin is 174 m high and gives a wonderful panoramic view of Split. South cliffs are popular within alpine climbers. St. Nicholas church is situated on the east of Marjan, on it's south side are beautiful St. Jeronimus church and "Gospe od Betlema" church (Madonna of Betlehem). House building is strictly forbidden in order to save Marjan - the lungs of Split.

Varoš - one of the oldest parts of town. A place where lived most of the city peasants and fishermen. Charming streets and and beautiful small houses.

Galerija Meštrović - gallery contains works of Ivan Meštrović, famous Croatian sculptor.

Archaeological Museum - the oldest museum in Croatia(1820.), about 20 min walk north of the old town (entry 20 kn). Many artefacts and monuments from Roman colonies Salona and Narona.

Poljud stadium. Poljud stadium known to locals as "Poljudska Ljepotica" (Poljud Beauty")is a second largest stadium in Croatia and has a capacity of 36,000 people. The stadium was originally constructed by the Yugoslavian government as part of the facilites for the 1979 Mediterannean Games and was oficially opened by Josip Broz Tito, who was avowed fan of the team who play their home games in Poljud HNK Hajduk Split. By far the most important and revered sports team in Dalmatia, a dedicatet fanbase around the world has followed Hajduk throughout the team's history. There are numerous anecdotes about Hajduk never played without at least some of their loyal fans in the stands, the Torcida. It is the oldest supporters group in Europe. If you are going to visit some match do not go on north part, which is the cheapest one, that part is reserved for Torcida.
