Supporting our students to achieve their personal best

As we move beyond the half way point of Term 3, we aim to challenge all students to achieve their personal best. Every day in every way, staff are committed to working with our students to provide engaging learning activities that inspire, extend and prepare our students to become life-long learners. One of the best parts of our job is visiting classrooms and hearing all the wonderful interactions that make up teaching and learning dialogues between our students and staff. It is always inspiring to see students modelling our school’s expectations of Respect, Responsibility and Excellence.

Year 12 - their last few weeks

It is hard to recall a more challenging and unique set of circumstances for HSC students as the ones our current cohort are facing in 2020. Our Year 12 students continue to approach their studies with commitment and resilience knowing that they have the full support of their teachers and that all year 12 students state wide are in the same boat. The Year 12 teachers, and the Amping it up Mentors have been outstanding in providing ongoing support for our students and they have played a significant role in ensuring their continuity of learning and wellbeing throughout the year.

The Executive Team have been engaged in planning the last day of term and graduation celebrations despite COVID restrictions. The biggest challenge is the factor of the unknown. In saying that, the school is committed to providing our Class of Year 12 the school leaving experience they deserve to celebrate thirteen years of schooling, farewell them appropriately and wish them all the best for their future.

Sport during Term 3

Following the latest Department of Education health guidelines referencing sport arrangements in the current school climate and in consultation with our School Sporting Zone, the decision was made to withdraw Cumberland High School from our grade sporting competition for the remainder of the term. This decision was communicated to and agreed upon by all schools in the zone. The recreational sport program will continue to run on a Wednesday afternoon for all Year 7-10 students. Alternate grade sport arrangements have been made and are communicated to all students on a weekly basis.

Year 11 Program for Improvement 2020

Phase 2 of the Year 11 Program for Improvement 2020 is underway following Progress Report summaries completed by staff. This part of the Program involves interviews with students and their parents to discuss unresolved N-Award concerns and future options. These interviews will occur in Week 8 and 9 post the Year 11 Preliminary Exam period. It is pleasing to note that Phase 1 intervention has resulted in over 80% of students meeting course requirements. All course requirements must be met for the award of the ROSA (Record of School Achievement) and the HSC (Higher School Certificate). Cumberland High School remains committed to supporting all students to attain both these awards.

Year 12, 2021

Work for the graduating class of 2021 has begun and the Year 11 students will receive vital information regarding Year 12 study options, assessment information as well as School and NESA requirements during Week 8. The planned parent information meeting will not go ahead however, all information given to students will be emailed home to families. Please do not hesitate to contact Ms Saouma (Year 12 2021 Year Advisor) or Mrs Shadwick (Year 12 2021 Deputy) if you have any questions regarding Year 12 2021.

ROUND ROBIN - ALGEBRA STYLE

When Year 7 start high school, one of the first things they ask us Mathematics teachers is “When do we study Algebra?”

Algebra plays a big part in Mathematics! Why? Because it is such a useful tool for finding answers to many different problems – such as programming traffic lights, estimating populations, building bridges, understanding how swings, merry-go-rounds etc work…. We often say to our students that Algebra enables us to become better logical thinkers!

Hence, on Thursday 23rd July, the students in 7-Citrine participated in a game of Round Robin Algebra Style. The aim of this activity was to review their understanding of Algebra in a more creative, yet fun way. We completed activities involving: • Adding and subtracting like

terms • Multiplying and dividing terms • Algebraic expressions • Substitution • Number and geometrical

Patterns • Writing rules using Algebra

Upon entering the classroom, each student arranged themselves into small groups of 3 - 4 people and each group chose a table to start from.

There were 8 different sets of questions to answer. After 5 minutes the timer would ring, and students were given the opportunity to correct their answers. After a couple of minutes, the students moved to the next group of tables and the whole process started again.

Here are some of the students working hard. By their big smiles, I know that they were having fun.

LENGTH, PERIMETER AND AREA – YEAR 7

7 Opal has been studying the topic of Length, Perimeter and Area. Over the term they have looked at several different shapes and the formulas to find the area of each of those shapes.

In class, the students spent some time creating formula sheets to help them remember how to find the area for different quadrilateral and triangles.

Mr J Choe Maths Teacher 7O

The students in Year 7 this term have expanded their understanding of area and perimeter. 7 Sapphire were tasked with designing a model house using a sheet of plywood. The students worked collaboratively in groups and showed great enthusiasm to make the best design possible.

Each group firstly measured the plywood to see how much they had to work with. Then they drew plans for their houses in their book using the measurements they took of their plywood. They drew outlines of the shapes that they needed to be cut out and returned to them in a future lesson to be assembled. It was a good day in the sun whilst also learning how to apply their mathematical ideas of area, perimeter and measurement to something real and practical.

USING TECHNOLOGY IN MATHS – 9R

9 Red have recently been studying statistics in Mathematics. They have been observing if any correlation exists between two variables and have used calculations to determine how strong the relationship is between them.

They found that using pencil and paper is very tedious when constructing scatter plots, hence, they were given the opportunity to utilise laptops to help with the process. Opening an excel spreadsheet, entering data and utilising the graph function made the process a breeze. They discovered some of the many functions available on spreadsheets and found that the ‘trendline’ even gave an equation.

9 Red investigated the change in Antarctic ice mass over a number of years and then used the equation from excel to predict what may happen in the future.

Ms D Oosterhoff Maths Teacher 9R

BUILDING PATTERNS TO PREDICT SOME FUTURE VALUES – 8O

Year 8 have recently started the topic Linear Relationships. They have been recognising the idea that as a value increases, such as the age of a tree, then other measurable things also change, such as the tree’s height. We can observe the pattern between these two things to predict the tree’s height in the future.

8 Opal have built a number of patterns using blocks, counters and various objects. They used tables and algebra to find a link between the shape number and the number of pieces required to build it.

They observed that spreadsheets can also display the link between these relationships.

Are you able to calculate how

many blocks is required to build the 21st shape?

Here are some more photos of 8 Opal in action.

Investigating Surface Area and Volume – 10R

Year 10 Red investigated the relationship between the surface area and volume of a cylinder in a recent lesson. Before doing any calculations they were asked to roll up an A4 piece of paper into a cylinder, first along the short side, and then along the long side.

They were then asked to vote for which cylinder contained the greater volume, or, if they thought the two volumes were equal.

A number of students thought that the two volumes must be equal. After all, it’s the same piece of paper, just rolled up in two different ways.

What do you think?

The students then put their heads together to measure up the A4 paper and work out the calculations required to identify the two volumes.

The results were a little surprising to some of the class. It turned out the “fatter” cylinder contains more volume than the “skinny” one, even though they both have the same surface area! A bigger radius (a “fatter” cylinder) has a greater effect on the volume than a taller (and “skinnier”) one.

Mr D Caulfield Maths Teacher 10R

Above: 10Red Students Voting then back to work to solve the problem.

English & Drama

Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' has been the focus for this term in both Year 7 English and Drama. The unit commences with some fact finding and research into the Elizabethan era so our students can understand what it was like to go and see a play over 400 years ago.

Below are a few pictures of our 7 Amethyst class engrossed (and grossed out by muck-heaps) in their research.

Also pictured, are students from Year 7 Ruby and 7 Emerald exploring the comedic ACT 3, Scene 1, where Puck, the naughty fairy, transforms the head of the pompous Bottom the Weaver into the head of a donkey!

Mock Trial

Cumberland Vs Epping Boys High School

The Cumberland High School Mock Trial team were hosted by Epping Boys High School last week. The trial was undertaken in a collegial environment where both teams enjoyed each other’s company on a wet Friday evening. The magistrate appeared via video link.

Cumberland were the defence in a tight contest. The end result saw our team unable to cast enough doubt to free the defendant, but prevail in the overall trial!

Volleyball

As like most things in 2020, our volleyball season has been severely impacted by the pandemic.

The Boys had won their only knockout game prior to the pandemic and the Girls had won both of their KO matches.

Training has been limited, but Ms Pikoulas and the school was able to send the boys over to Olympic park for training on two occasions. The pictures (right), from Quay centre, show the boys warming up and blocking. We thank Barb Caterson for taking us over to Olympic park on the school bus!

Our team consisted of:

Barristers: Rachel Harkin and Samuel Megeurditchian

Court Officer: Vedant Trivedi

Solicitor: Harry Choi

Witnesses: Taylor Barrientos and Serena Carvajal

Training for boys and girls is suspended until next term.

I encourage the students to continue their out of school training with their clubs.

Mr K Thomas Volleyball Coach

A special thanks to Leonie Jenkins for transporting us to and from the trial on the school bus!

Our final round for 2020 will be against Katoomba High, in a zoom trial, on Wednesday Sept 9th from 12.30pm.

Mr K Thomas Mock Trial Coach It’s always important to stretch!

Library News Genrefication Library Project

The Library is currently adding genre stickers to our library fiction collection to allow students to quickly find the books that they will enjoy. The genrefication project process involves labelling the library book spines with a bright colour-coded icon to represent the genre of the book.

Avid readers will find a book no matter the organisation system. However, the genrefication of our book collection makes it easier for reluctant readers to find books that align with their interests, instead of getting overwhelmed by shelf after shelf of titles. There will be no change to the location of books on the shelves in the library and students can still search OLIVER the school library digital catalogue online at home or at school.

Premiers Reading Challenge

Congratulations to the many students who have completed this year’s Premier’s reading Challenge. This year we have had a 200 percent increase in the number of students who have completed the challenge. TODAY IS THE LAST DAY for students to submit their reading log – complete your reading log online by 11:59PM on 28th August.

Robotics Robotics News

Our robotics group has been working hard to build and programme the Lego EV3 robots from the Stem T4L kits. This weeks challenge was to programme the robot to complete a large maze with only a few instructions. Some students programmed by setting distances and various angled turns enabling the robot to navigate through the maze. Other students used the colour sensor to instruct the robot to only go forward when the colour was white. The challenge for these students was how to keep the sensor on the white background of the maze. This required some clever programming to make the robot move slightly backward after sensing a non-white area before completing the turn and start moving again for the next section of the maze. Students also experimented with different sounds and sensors to make the robots play music or talk when a sensor was activated.

Year 10 Careers Conference

Despite the uncertainty we’ve experienced this year, we forged ahead with the annual Year 10 Careers Conference. Students embraced the opportunity to dress for success and enthusiastically participated in the new format. We started the day with a networking breakfast, a chance for them to learn more about each other’s skills and interests. We then broke out into groups to learn skills for digital interviews, recording ourselves answering the question, “Tell me about yourself”. Next, we hosted mentors from a variety of industries to discuss their career journeys, give tips and answer our questions about careers. We then learned their rights and responsibilities for work health and safety and demonstrated our knowledge to teachers. Finally, we learned about presenting ourselves to others and recorded ourselves answering the question, “Tell me about a time you were part of a team. What role did you play?” We saw some awesome recordings at the end of the day.
