families are glad to be rid ofthem. Girls are maggots in the
rice. It is more profitable to
raise geese than daughter. Hequoted me the saying I hate

Im going to hit you if you dont stop.Bad girl! Stop!.
Im not a bad girl I would scream. Im
not a bad girl. I might as well have said.
Im not a bad girl. (Kingston 1976).
Bad girl, my mnother yelled, and
sometimes that made me gloat ratherthan cry. Isnt a bad girl almost a boy?

When one of my parents os the emigrant
villagers said, feeding girls is feedingcowbirds, I would trash on the floor and
scream so hard I couldnt talk. I couldnt stop.
Whats the matter with her?
Idont know. Bad I guess. You know how girlsare. theres no profit in raising girls. Better to
rise gees than girls
I would hit her if she were mine. But then
theres no use wasting all that discipline on agil. When you raise girls , youre raising
children for strangers. (Kingston 1976)
