Greetings from Concordia College!Greetings from Concordia College and welcome to our 2015-16 series of cultural, musical and educational events crafted to inspire, educate, inform and entertain.

Our annual series begins with the Faith, Reason and World Affairs Symposium, which this year focuses on China and its rising influence in the world. Our annual Christmas Concert, “Let Every Heart Awake and Sing,” continues our long tradition of sharing the promise of Christmas through music.

The many and enriching facets of the liberating arts will be found within these pages that reflect a carefully selected series of visual and performing arts, lectures and presentations performed by our students, our faculty, and renowned guests from across our region, country and the world.

7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8Centrum, Knutson Campus Center

Tickets: $25 Reserved; $20 General Admission; $10 Students under 18

Journey through an unexpected musical heritage – one steeped in tradition, transformed by worldwide influences and reborn through the struggle to carry the past into the present. It’s an artistic legacy that looks and sounds nothing like a stereotype. “The Last Queen of Hawaii” is a celebration of traditional dance, storytelling, and song, beginning with an ancient creation chant, highlighting Victorian parlor songs, missionary hymns and paniolo (“cowboy”) tunes, and ending with the imprisonment of the last Hawaiian Queen – Lili‘uokalani, composer of the beloved and timeless “Aloha ’Oe.” One of the most talked-about programs of two decades of programming, this exploration of Hawaii’s rich cultural history is as revealing and breathtaking as the valleys and gardens of the Islands themselves. This concert is part of The Rose Ensemble’s Greater Minnesota Tour, funded in large part by the Otto Bremer Foundation.Photo: Michael Haug Photography

Bill Bowers – Mime Artist7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3

Frances Frazier Comstock Theatre

Tickets: $25 Reserved; $20 General Admission; $10 Students under 18

Often compared to Chaplin and Keaton, Bill Bowers has truly created a style all his own as a mime. As a student of world-renowned mime Marcel Marceau, Bowers is deeply influenced by this master’s technique and artistry. The greatest gift he received from his intensive study with Marceau has been the emergence of his own “voice” as a mime performer – a melding together of a classical style with a contemporary sensibility. His eloquent movement evokes the deepest truths of the human condition. Bowers has performed throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe. He has appeared on Broadway, the stages of Radio City Music Hall, Madison Square Garden and the Kennedy Center, in a feature film and several television programs.

River Songs and Tales with Mark Twain

VocalEssence7:30 pm. Friday, Jan. 29Memorial Auditorium

Tickets: $25 Reserved; $20 General Admission; $10 Students under 18

VocalEssence Ensemble Singers, folk fiddler Sara Pajunen and Don Shelby as Mark Twain go on the road to celebrate life on the Mississippi River. Through choral music and the spoken word, VocalEssence takes listeners on a musical journey of the past and present – choral masterpieces, favorite folk songs, traditional spirituals, and Americana – all paired with the words of Mark Twain. As a leading Minnesota arts organization now in its 47th season, VocalEssence, made up entirely of local residents from the Twin Cities, uses the power of choral music to enhance the community by producing innovative vocal music events that stir people’s souls.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. Photo: Bruce Silcox

American Spiritual Ensemble8 p.m. Tuesday, April 5Memorial Auditorium

Tickets: $25 Reserved; $20 General Admission; $10 Students under 18For MPR member discount, visit ConcordiaTickets.com or call (218) 299-4366. The critically acclaimed American Spiritual Ensemble has delighted audiences worldwide. Founded in 1995, the ASE aims to keep the American Negro Spiritual alive. When Africans were brought to America as slaves, they lost their traditional music as well as their freedom. They added African chants, rhythms and harmonies to the Christian songs they learned and created spirituals. Classical music’s finest singers keep the songs alive, beautifully capturing the haunting genius of these folk melodies. The vocalists have thrilled audiences all around the world with their dynamic renditions of classic spirituals and Broadway numbers.

China is rising in a world that has been profoundly shaped by Western culture, ideas, and, not coincidentally, Western political, economic, and military power. As numerous commentators have observed, China’s rapid economic growth, which is fueling a rapid military modernization effort and a global hunt for resources, has at least the potential to challenge Western dominance and thereby transform the very nature of the world in which we live. Will an increasingly powerful and resource-hungry China seek to integrate itself into the existing order? Or will its rise serve to transform the global order in ways that we might not even quite yet fathom. As author Martin Jacques has observed: “We are so used to the world being Western, even American, we have no idea what it would be like if it was not.”

The 2015 Faith, Reason and World Affairs Symposium will explore the political, economic, environmental, cultural, and security implications of China’s rise. Among the questions to be addressed: What might we learn from China’s cultural and philosophical traditions in imagining its potential impact on the global order? How will China’s rise influence existing political, economic, and military institutions? What will be the impact on its relations with the United States and other actors, both in Asia and around the globe? How should we understand and engage with a rising China?

For more information about the Faith, Reason and World Affairs Symposium, call the Office of Cultural Events at (218) 299-4366.

This year’s Faith, Reason, and World Affairs Symposium art exhibition is made possible by the generosity of the Klein Sun Gallery of New York and its loan of 16 photographs by Chinese-born artist Liu Bolin. The performance and photographic series “Hiding in the City” began in 2005 when the Chinese government demolished the village in which Liu worked and he painted his body in order to disappear into the environment, his stillness functioning as “a silent protest.” Since then, Liu has ventured beyond the boundaries of China using his camouflaged body to explore China’s issues. The exhibition highlights both Liu’s earlier politically charged domestic work to more recent

imagery in globally significant sites such as New York’s Ground Zero. Concordia’s Fulbright scholar-in-residence for fall 2015, Kwon Kisoo, will give this year’s Gallery Lecture. He will be sharing images of his work, talking about the nature of his artistic practice and the challenges of navigating the global, regional (East Asian) and national (South Korean) art worlds to which he belongs. Although formally trained as an ink painter in the traditions of East Asian artmaking, he freely mixes the motifs, tropes and forms of literati painting with those of contemporary and popular visual culture.

Public reception: 4-5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19 This exhibition illustrates Holocaust survivors living in Minnesota, in their homes, in full color. Each is a story of survival during exceedingly difficult circumstances. As a collection, these images focus on life and hope. From Europe to Minnesota, it was here they fashioned their dreams, their futures, and their families. Their lives are constant reminders about the value of freedom and the enduring human spirit.

– from “Transfer of Memory” website Photographer David Sherman and writer Lili Chester, in partnership with the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC), created this photography exhibit. Please visit transferofmemory.org for more information concerning this traveling exhibition.
