In India, rice is grown beneath different conditions from sea level to around 2,500 meter altitude and from 8° to 25° N latitude. As a tropical plant, rice requires high humidity and high heat to grow successfully. This means that the monthly temperature should be of 24°C. Rice required an average rainfall of 150 cm per year and irrigation can help rice to grow in regions where the average rainfall below 100 cm.

In India, various methods are used to cultivate rice. These methods include broadcasting methods in which seeds are sown broadcast by hand. This method is the easiest and practiced in less fertile and dry areas. The drilling method requires two persons to plough land and sow seeds. The transplantation method is practice in regions of fertile soil with plentiful rainfall and abundant supply of labor. The seeds are sown before to be uprooted in order to be planted in another area already prepared.
