Value of Family Engagement
“In a growing number of instances where truly stunning levels of improvement have been achieved….Leaders of these organizations often cite that putting patients and families in a position of real power and influence, using their wisdom and experience to redesign and improve care systems – as being the single most powerful transformational change in history.”
Reinertsen, J.L., Bisagnano, M & Pugh, M. Seven Leadership Leverage Points for Organizational level Improvement in Health Care. 2nd Edition, IHI
InnovationSeries, 2008.

Quality Improvement Strategy
We must shift from servicing families to partnering with families.
So What… Now What?
Mythbusting for MCH Professionals
Fear-Based Thinking Innovative Thinking
Families are complainers Families bring informed solutions
Don’t understand the business of prevention or healthcare
They are business owners too
HIPPA regs won’t allow for this Family Leaders sign confidentiality statements like any other consultant
FCC takes too much time Efficiency is increased
Families are not available to participate Develop equitable contract/agreement
The families we work with don’t care We haven’t tried hard enough
Mythbusting for Parents Fear-Based Thinking Innovative Thinking
My experience doesn’t matter. My experience could be a valuable teaching moment for my practice.
The “business” of healthcare is too complex.
Most healthcare providers run their clinic as a small business – and I understand small business.
HIPPA regulations won’t allow me to have access to clinic files.
As a Parent Partner I will sign a confidentiality statement like any other consultant.
Quality Improvement is ambiguous and takes too much time.
Quality improvement is based on core “customer service” principles, to which I can contribute with relative ease.
I don’t have time to get involved. Developing a clear and concise consulting framework will benefit myself and other families.
I’ve offered feedback in the past, but no one ever listens.
Communicate differently.
An intentional shift from a dependency model to a partnership model.

Value at All Levels
Readiness Indicators
• Inner Ring – Clinical or direct service focused
• Mid-Ring – Community focus such as schools, neighborhood
• Outer Ring – Policy focus, understands broad context and impact.
The Right Partner at the Right Time
Your role is to clearly define what your needs and expectations are.
Achieving outcomes is based on our ability to understand, respect and embrace a family’s care experience and braid that into innovation for quality improvement.
Readiness Factors
• Explore past history
• Are you ready for full transparency
• Leadership support in all directions
• Willingness to be flexible
• Your budget is your policy statement!
Diversity Matters We can adopt systemic strategies from what we have learned from families with CYSHCN, to grow the impact to all MCH populations.
