alert and the Polar Vortex at the end of January.

Stacey also gave an excellent presentation on Project Tundra. Project Tundra is a project being designed with the goal of capturing up to 95 percent of the carbon dioxide emission from Unit 2 at the Milton R. Young Station with amine-based technology. The CO2 will be used for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) or simple permanent underground storage. In the EOR application the CO2 would be transported through a 100+ mile pipeline to be used to recover oil that is otherwise stranded and unrecoverable. In the storage application it will be injected in saline formations near the plant property that has been proven to provide permanent storage.

Project Tundra has been modeled after the successful Petra Nova Project located in Texas. There has been a lot of progress made, but there is still work to be done before Project Tundra will be implemented.

Stacey made herself available to the members following the meeting to ask any additional questions they had.

Timber Event Center staff pro-vided excellent accommodations

for the meeting and the great meal that followed.

And finally, special recognition and thank you goes to all the Board Members and Employees of Clearwater-Polk. They play a key role in not only the success of the annual meeting, but also the success of the Co-op all year long.

Thank you again to all those mentioned above and to the members who attended. We hope to see you at next year’s annual meeting.

Manager’s Message

Safety Starts with YouElectricity plays many roles in our

lives, from powering baby monitors, cell phones and lighting to running heating or air conditioning systems and appliances. When we flip a switch, we expect most systems or devices to do the job.

May is National Electrical Safety Month, and here at Clearwater-Polk, we think it’s a great time to look around your home and check for potential safety hazards.

Remember, every electrical device has a purpose and a service lifespan. While we can extend their operations with maintenance and care, none of them are designed to last or work forever. When electricity is involved, failures can present electrical hazards that might be avoided with periodic inspections.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, approximately 51,000 electrical fires are reported each year in the United States, causing more than $1.3 billion in annual property damage.

Electricity is an essential necessity for modern living, and Clearwater-Polk is committed to providing safe, reliable and affordable power "Kenneth Hove" to all our members. We hope you’ll take the time to check both inside and outside your home for possible risks.

Mother’s DayMay is also a time to honor and

celebrate Moms. A time we can thank them for the critical role they play in our lives. In our childhood, she stood ahead of us to set an example. As we grew up and became teenagers, she was always behind us to lend support whenever we needed it. Once we became an adult, she started to walk beside us so we could be friends forever. A mother is always there for her child. Thank you to all the Moms!

Memorial Day and Our TroopsAs Memorial Day approaches, I

would like to thank our troops for serving our country and those who won’t be able to spend this special day with their family. Please remember and honor the many brave Americans who have fought for the freedom we have today and those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Freedom isn’t free! May God continue to bless America, the troops and their families.

Annual MeetingIn closing, I would like to thank

everyone who attended our 72nd annual meeting and all those who had a part in making the day a success. A special thank you to our guest speaker Stacey Dahl, External Affairs Manager at Minnkota Power Cooperative in Grand Forks, N.D. She had a very informative presentation on Project Tundra, a research and development project to capture carbon from the Milton R. Young Station. If the project gets completed, North Dakota would be the home of the largest carbon capture facility in the world.

She ended her presentation with an update on legislative issues going on in St. Paul. Legislation, regulation and mandates continue to be a concern for us. Our largest challenge in Minnesota is helping policymakers understand the complexity involved in providing reliable electricity as they aggressively pursue carbon legislation. While we support renewable energy, we are opposed to mandates that could increase cost of electricity and reduce reliability. Who will be held accountable when there is an interruption to power supply due to an inadequate supply of baseload generation or peaking plants? That answer is us,

so it remains our responsibility and our priority to impress upon policymakers a responsible path forward in their pursuit of becoming carbon-free.

We are especially worried about this during extreme weather events, such as the polar vortex experienced here in Minnesota in January. Stacey spoke about Minnkota’s generation resources and how well they performed during that time. Their coal power plants provided 81%, hydro 10% and wind 9% of the generation during that extreme cold weather. On average, wind supplies 23% of their generation mix, however they cannot operate when temperatures are colder than -20 degrees Fahrenheit. Minnkota’s Demand Response System was also critical during that time. Thank you to our off-peak members who were able to use their backup heating system during peak times.

Congratulations to Kim Solberg from District 1, Robert Johnson from District 2, Greg Spaulding and Bill Lanners from District 3, who were elected to represent the members from their districts.

Vernon Hamnes and Keith DeMaris have both decided to retire. Thank you for serving on Clearwater-Polk’s Board of Directors. Vernon was elected to the board in 1981, served as board president for 21 years, represented us from district one on MREA’s board for 15 years and has done a great job representing the members from district 1 for 38 years. Keith was elected to the board in 2015 and has also been great at representing the members in district 3. They both showed great commitment and leadership to the cooperative and will be truly missed.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call or stop by the office. Bruce
