This month we shun conven-tion and throw caution to the chill December wind. In place of the ubiquitous

gift guide, we instead bring you something more forward-thinking and fun—a New Year’s Eve map! We show you what to wear, where to go, whom to go with (okay, that last one’s up to you).

We also offer advice on how to host a successful dinner party without running yourself ragged in the pro-cess. (Hint: Keep Twister on hand. It livens up any occa-sion—and keeps you limber!)

In our fashion pages, Lila Ashmore offers an ingenious reinterpretation of the Little Black Dress. Trust us, it’s really cool (no, seri-ously, it was shot at the ice skating rink).

We also visit the spirited dogs of Cantrell Gallery, whose personalities are as different as night and day (or cats and dogs). We then linger over coffee with Laura Raborn, a multi-tal-ented, multi-faceted artist who continues to grow and evolve in wonderful ways.

The New Year will bring many changes for CUE, so beginning in January, be on the lookout for a new format. Is the suspense killing you?!

BEFORE THE PARTY

Be my guest: Limit your guest list to a number that will fit comfortably into the space you have (com-fortably being the operative word). A good rule of thumb is to only invite as many people as can be seat-

ed around the table (without cramming extra chairs in the corners). If you’re determined to have a larger guest list, you might consider skipping dinner in favor of appetizers and cocktails. It’s also important to invite the right mix of people and know when to throw in a wild card who will keep conversation scintillating.

dinner party:no-stressThe

yes, it exists.

My beloved, gracious grandmother, Kitty, once said of having a

dinner party, “You work all day and then you have to put on a girdle

and high heels and act like you’re glad to see everyone.” So true. But

today it doesn’t have to be that way (for one thing, we have Spanx).

We also have a wealth of tips (see below). For starters, pick up these indispensable bar

tools to make those all-important drinks.

Don’t be partial to paper: When it comes to invitations, the evite is an excellent option. If you don’t want to spend money on invitations and postage, you can always design a unique invitation online. Plus, evites allow you to make updates if needed, add guests and monitor your RSVP list.

table time: Set the table and deco-rate beforehand. Any gathering calls for flowers, so buy them the day before and arrange them the day of your party. Flowers are a simple, sure-fire way to pretty up a place. Depending on availability, you can also use potted suc-culents for something different. Other original table tips: bring the outside in by scattering pretty fall leaves on the table (ginkgo leaves work well) and get creative with place cards and center-pieces. For a dinner party celebrating an engagement, I once used boxes of heart candy as place cards, another we cut out pictures from old yearbooks that resembled each guest. Get creative!

think theme: Don’t shy away from the themed dinner party. It doesn’t have to be elaborate; even a simple theme can turn an average get-together into an event to remember.

rearrange furniture: Once you determine the number of guests, walk through what will be the main

gathering area. Imagine your party underway, and determine if you’ll need to add more chairs, remove an end table or lamp, add a serving tray or even a card table to accommodate an overflow of guests that can’t be seated at the main dining table. (This is obvi-ously relevant only if you didn’t follow the above rule about limiting the guest list.) If you’re really inspired, weather permitting, you can even move some furniture outdoors to create an outdoor living room. There’s nothing like a party under the stars.

Don’t air your Dirty laun-Dry: Check table linens and hand towels to make sure they are clean and, depending on your standards, pressed.

you Don’t have to go gour-met: Don’t feel like you have to go gourmet for your dinner party. It’s expensive and unnecessary. Instead, pull out your cookbooks or do some online searching. There are plenty of web sites that have full menus pre-pared, and you’re bound to find some-thing that will be both delicious and cost-effective. (For more detailed menu planning tips, see below.)

Delegate: Learn to ask for help. A great way to limit the stress of orches-trating a dinner party is to unload some of the responsibility. Consider asking

guests to pitch in by bringing an appe-tizer, dessert or beverage. This allows you to focus on the main dish.. It’s a good idea to coordinate who is bring-ing what so you don’t end up with an unbalanced table, but it will save you a lot of work.

Show me the china: Dinner par-ties are a great occasion to show off your best china, glassware and silver-ware. (You know, those things you got for your wedding and never use?) Look them over before your party to ensure that you’ve got enough place settings for your anticipated number of guests, and that nothing has been chipped or damaged. Polish the silverware, and clean any dust, dirt, water spots or fingerprints off the glasses and china. If you want to be less formal, it’s fun to mix the good stuff with your everyday things.

DURING THE PARTY muSic makeS the mood: Make sure that the music doesn’t overwhelm but enhances, unless the dinner party turns into a dance party, in which case crank it up and just be glad you rear-ranged that furniture.

Let the gameS begin: Don’t be afraid to break out the games. Sure, people initially object and seem uncomfortable, but most of the time they end up loving it. We once used vintage postcards as place cards and

then asked guests to come up with captions to go with the image on their cards. Lots of laughing ensued. A good old-fashioned game of charades, though often met with resistance at first, really gets a party going.

Let there be Light: A few strings of lights and some scattered candles make any affair more festive. Feel free to improv, using jelly jars or baby food jars (labels removed) to hold votives.

STRESS-REDUCING TIPS SPECIFICALLY FOR MENU PLANNINGLove your Laptop: There are hundreds of online recipe and cooking forums. With just a little bit of research, you can find a wealth of great ideas for easy, delicious appetizers, main cours-es, sides, desserts and even cocktails (or mocktails for the non-drinking set).

pLan ahead: Choose a menu with as many make-ahead dishes as pos-sible. If you like to cook, you’ll have the leisure to enjoy what you’re doing instead of feeling frantic about a dead-line, and you’ll have time to clean up after you cook. Also, if there is a mis-hap, you have plenty of time to come up with an alternate plan. It’s particu-larly important to prepare the dessert ahead, so you don’t have to leave the table just when the conversation is get-ting really interesting.

guests are not guinea pigs: Never try out a new recipe at a dinner party. Ever.

every dish has its day: Don’t try do make every dish something special. Most of the time your guests won’t notice that you substituted olive oil for that recipe that specifically called for walnut oil (which is expensive and hard to find). Or that you couldn’t track down champagne vinegar. You’ll be annoyed that you spent the extra money and effort. Choose one or two items you want to focus on, like a gour-met salad or a decadent dessert, then keep the rest simple.

pie (presentation is every-thing): Liven up your menu with contrasting colors. Maybe your child only eats white foods, but your guests certainly don’t want a monotone meal.

Dietary restrictions: Keep in mind any important food issues your guests might have. Of course you can’t cater to everyone’s likes and dislikes, but you should be aware if anyone is a vegetar-ian or has serious allergies. You really don’t want someone going into ana-phylactic shock at your dinner party. So rude.

Beth Wilson and Alana Best of Blush Salon say you should have day-old hair before a party and then do some loose curls with it. “The messy look is in! too, “I’m loving the messy, lived-in updo for the holidays. The contrast of elegant dresses with effortless, feminine hair is a very French look. My hair philosophy overall focuses on working with a woman’s natural texture—not flat ironing and torturing hair into submission.”

The staff of Rejuvenation Clinic suggests giving yourself the gift of lashes this holi-day season. Xtreme lash eyelash extensions are a revolutionary product that provide longer, thicker and natural looking eyelashes. Eyelash extensions are perfect for every-day wear and are water resistant. Xtreme lash extensions last up to two months with regular maintenance and touchups. Enjoy the pleasure of never having to wear mascara again!

The always nattily dressed Jackson Stewart of Salon Avatar shares this: “I’ve seen a lot of updos that are loser, more organic and undone. People are leaning away from the stiff updo. They’re doing more of a loose, tousled look with pieces of hair around the face. It’s also fun to do something a little bit decorative with bows or headbands (emphasis on little).”

Charity Foster and Alison Waggener, owners of super chic Tease Salon, say, “Most of our clients are asking for a natural but polished look nothing overdone.” They recom-mend Moroccan Oil Shine Spray or Aquage Silkening Serum to achieve this look.

THE WILDEST PARTY IN TOWNTHE LITTLE ROCK ZOO

NYE at the zoo is more fun than a barrel of monkeys—or a pack of laughing hyenas for that matter. So we strongly suggest joining the zoo for an “old Hollywood” night of danc-ing and drama as they celebrate New Year’s on the Nile! Cafe Africa will be transformed into Grauman’s Hollywood Theater. You’ll get cat scratch fever as you dance the night away to the funky tunes of one of the hottest cover bands around, the Shannon Boshears Band. They’ll also roll out the red carpet for a premiere dinner buffet, unlimited bev-erages and specialty cocktails.

Spokesperson Susan Altrui says: “Zoo Year’s Eve is not only a fabulous event but also the best value in town. The $75 dollar ticket price includes admission, entertainment, all beverag-es, and, thanks to a generous donation from Ben E. Keith, a delicious dinner buffet with lots of food options! Ray and Krist Imbro, owners of Party Time Rental and Events, know a thing or two about event plan-ning. We recently caught up with them—en route from a venue for a 2,000-person event—to ask about how to prepare for a successful New Year’s party. No matter the size of the gathering, these tips, directly from Mr. Party Time himself, are sure to help.

What does Ray say?• Think outside the box. You’re not limited by your own space; many people have tents put up to expand their living area. You can light and decorate them to suit your tastes and are only limited by your imagination.• Let someone else do the cooking. Find a good caterer and make sure you know how they prepare their food and how flexible they can be with the menu. You don’t want them serving up mini-quiches from SAM’s at your party! (Yes, that’s actually happened.)• Don’t neglect your entryway. Flowers make a great first impres-sion, so use them to decorate your entrance. Adorn the food table with florals, too. • Table linens make the biggest splash. They make up 40% of Party Time’s business, and there’s a reason for that. Linens are the easiest way to add color to your palette, and they can be used to tie your interior and exte-rior together.• Let someone else do the dishes. Rent your dishes, glasses, flatware and foodwarmers. • Let someone else set up and clean up.• Hire an event coordinator. • Get dressed up and have fun!

In the coming months and years, we at the Arkansas Times hope to roll out a num-ber of phone apps to complement our already launched mobile site (m.arktimes.com). But today we’re proud to announce the launch of our first iPhone app, Cocktail Compass. Unlike a lot of media apps that simply repurpose a website,

we’re confident it will prove truly user friendly. Why? Because it answers two of the most important questions we ask during a down economy: How can I save money? And where can I get a drink?

Cocktail Compass, available for free on the iTunes store, collects information on every bar, restaurant and venue that serves alcohol in Central Arkansas and steers you to the closest happy hour.

Tap the app and within moments you’ll see a list of the nearest happy hours, along with their address, distance from your current location and how long until their happy hour ends. To get more info, tap the bar’s name to see a map, call the bar or share it with friends.

Or maybe you’re looking for a bar with outdoor seating, shuffleboard and sports on TV in the River Market? Search by all those criteria and more. Or simply browse our expansive list to find an old favorite.

If you find a hidden gem, make it a favorite, and even if your memory’s a bit blurry, you’ll be able to find your way back next time. Speaking of blurry, at the end of the night, hit the Cabs icon and get home safely.

Restaurants and bars, easily update your happy hour info via www.arktimes.com/cocktailcompass. And readers, download Cocktail Compass and look out for notice among featured bars (those the yellow font) of specials available only to Cocktail Compass users.

laura Brainard Raborn, an accom-plished ceramicist, has recently expanded her repertoire to include vibrant works in oil. This month

would have marked the 15th year of Raborn’s popular annual pottery sale, but her art has taken a new turn. Lingering over a latte at Boulevard one Saturday, Laura reflects, “The whole time I was doing pottery I wanted to paint.” Did she ever kind of feel like she was cheating on clay? Not at all. She hasn’t aban-doned the medium altogether; she’s just spread-ing her artist’s wings—and taking a break from the physical demands of ceramics. It also just makes more sense for the way her life is now. “I found as a mother and a student that I couldn’t do both, space-wise and time-wise. I couldn’t study painting the way I wanted to study it and continue to make pottery. It’s been a tradeoff.”

Raborn has always enjoyed drawing, but has now become a student of it—and a dedicated, enthusiastic one at that. A year ago, she went back to school, to UALR, to pursue a Masters in Fine Art. “Going back has been so rewarding,” she says. “Unlike working in a home studio, your work is exposed to caring, critical faculty.” Raborn effuses, “Words cannot describe how impressed I am with the program and the faculty. I am so grateful that I get to go there. And the reason is because of the fac-ulty. They are totally engaged in helping students. Yes, they have their own careers as artists, but they make themselves fully avail-able to their students.”

Raborn’s first passion and priority are her children, Paige (10) and Phoebe (7). She says, “The bottom line to me in making this into a career is that it allows me to be self-employed and do something I’m passionate about while being a good parent.” As former teacher Matt

McLeod taught her, “You have to treat it like a business. Like you have a boss.”

She’s well on her way. Raborn has already experienced success with her Edward Hopper-esque custom home portraits and landscapes. She did a few for friends and family, and soon found herself

inundated with commissions.Never one to shy away from

a challenge, Raborn holds herself to high standards and aspires to a level of professionalism and techni-cal expertise that many artists do not. She refuses to settle for medi-ocrity, and this is reflected in her impressive work. She says of her

paintings, “I want them to be great; I don’t want them to be good. I want customers to love them. When they look at one of my paintings, I want them to feel that they’ve made a good investment.” We have no doubt that they will.

though I’m not exactly sure what it’s like to be a sheep, I got a taste of it on a recent visit to Cantrell Gallery, Little Rock’s old-est art gallery and custom framing busi-

ness. Skye, a border collie, greeted me at the door and then led me to the back where her owners, Clarke and Cindy Scott-Huisman, were working. Now, there was no nipping at the heels, mind you, but after meeting Skye’s intense gaze, I did feel strangely compelled to follow her. Yes, I was defi-nitely herded.

Many long-time Cantrell Gallery clients remem-ber Jack, Cindy and Clarke’s 12-year-old border collie who passed away about four years ago. Skye, named after the Isle of Skye, is a four-year-old with a one-track mind—and that track follows the trajec-tory of a ball. She never once takes her eyes off of it the entire visit.

The family owned and operated Cantrell Gallery has been in the framing/art business since 1970 and

the shop dog business for almost as long. “We’ve always had shop dogs,” says Clarke.

It’s only after Clarke indulges Skye in a game of fetch that he goes to retrieve Cassie, his mother-in-law Helen Scott’s soft-coated Wheaton Terrier, from the back. The two dogs are usually kept separate from one another, like gladiators at a coli-seum, because of the inevitable battles that ensue. (Working with friends can be tough.) Cassie then comes bounding into the room, and—the Wheaton unleashed—the scuffling begins. Clarke explains the source of the problem—that blasted ball! “Cassie wants to play with Skye; Skye wants to play with people ... It’s an interesting relationship.” Cassie simply refuses to accept that Skye prefers a ball to her and nips her back in protest. Even then, Skye keeps her eyes fixed on Clarke; her body tensed like a divining rod. She emits an almost human-like sound, neither a growl nor yelp. “She talks a lot at work. She’s not barking at you, she’s telling you that

she wants to play.”Cassie finally gives up and comes over to

inspect and growl at the camera. Named after Mary Cassatt, she’s a sweet, energetic four-year-old, and, as noted, really not that interested in play-ing ball. Like her namesake, she also loves children. But Cantrell Gallery isn’t the only business in town with a claim on Cassie. Helen tells us that she’s a huge hit at Curves, where she goes each morning before work. “She’s kind of the mascot of Curves,” says Helen. (Cassie’s sleek physique attests to this.)

Why a Wheaton? One day Helen saw Salvador in the window Bella Boutique and fell in love with the breed. She tracked down a puppy and took it home for a trial run. When she did, Helen’s late husband, Norman, said smiling, “You knew if you brought that dog in here, we’d keep her.”
