CubismThe two main artists that used cubism where Pablo Picasso and Georges

BraqueCubism had many branches, the main being ‘Analytic Cubism’, this was highly

influential between 1907 and 1911 in France. An English art writer explains that there where three main phases of cubism,

‘Early Cubism’ from 1906-1908, ‘High Cubism’ from 1909-1914 and finally ‘Late Cubism’ from 1914-1921.

Picasso and Georges where pioneers of cubism being part of both Early Cubism and Analytic Cubism.

Woman Playing A Mandolin -1909This painting was painted in the cubist style by Pablo Picasso, this is one of his

most famous cubist pieces. In this painting there is a topless women playing a Mandolin (a stringed

instrument similar to a guitar), the picture is painted with muted colours, with the main focal point being a pale cream colour making t stand out from the background.

This painting could have many meanings, one of liberation of the woman as she appears to be wearing nothing, this could mean freedom as women's rights weren’t regarded to highly back then.

I find it quite an interesting piece as it leads the viewer on a journey of thought toward the situation that may have lead to this painting and for it to have been composed the way it is.

Woman with guitar - 1913This painting, Woman with guitar , was painted by George Barque in 1913.This painting is of a woman playing a guitar, his and Picasso’s images are

somewhat similar as they both show women playing stringed instruments. George's’ style of cubism was very different to that of Picasso’s ; Picasso's are easily recognised as to what they are whereas Barques' need deeper exploration to be able to pick out what the main focal point actually is off.

The tone of this painting is rather light as the woman has two mouths, both of which are smiling.

I prefer Barque’s painting as it’s got a lighter mood and i see it to be slightly more creative as the various colours and shapes merge into each other creating a very interesting image.
