Rhodes Furniture plays North Pole to Santa Cops
S ince 1984, the Dallas Police Department has provided assistance to members of the community by providing toys and food during the Christmas season. In 1984, officers created and developed a program known as Santa Cops. The Santa Cops program has assisted over 10,000
families throughout the years and has been the topic of yearly news reports in the Dallas Morning News, the Police News and on local television stations. This project typically delivers the fruits of its efforts on the Saturday before Christ-mas to the selected needy families in Dallas. Most all the toys that are disturbed are donations that are collected by the local Marine’s Toys for Tots program and some private donations. With most families having 3 to 4 children per family they need mostly clothes and toys. Santa Cops steps in and tries to deliver each child a full Christmas including a turkey dinner.
The Santa Cops program was designed to assist members of the community who have been victims of crime and as a result of that act; they are unable to provide for their children during the holidays. Those that are selected, based on officer’s observations and comments, are prioritized by need. The next step is the best part of the process; watching the children’s faces when the officers bring the toys to their home.
How does Rhodes Office Furniture fit into this?
Rhodes Office Furniture was approached by an officer/friend who found out that this year it was Santa Cops that was in need. They were loosing their temporary warehouse space they’d used for more than 10 years that was ridiculously dusty, no lights or working bathroom. It had been sold to another owner and Santa Cops was in a real bind as the holidays were quickly approaching. Rhodes was there. They stepped right in and were able to help those that help others. So for 10 days leading up the Christmas, Rhodes warehouse was turned into a winter wonderland of toys and food. Rhodes employee Rani Ziccardi-Earp said “We watched as dozens of off duty police officers spend their free time unloading trucks of canned food, organizing toys by age groups and putting together bikes all for those wonderful kids. It was amazing to see them working so tirelessly to continue to help the community.” Rhodes took no compensation for the almost 5,000 sqft they used for those 10 days, but would only ask that they return next year to continue filling the Christmas dreams of those less fortunate.
