Installation and activation

Installation

Depending on your system, the Cubase 6.5 Start Center program on the DVD may start automatically. If no interactive start menu appears, view the contents on the DVD and double-click the file “Start_Center” under Windows or “Start Center” on a Mac computer. From here you can start the installation of Cubase and browse through the additional options and information.

Cubase 6.5 updates any previously installed Cubase 6.0.x version.

The software installation is covered in detail in the printed Quick Start Manual as well as in the Operation Manual PDF

Cubase 6.5 license activation

The retail version of Cubase 6.5 ships with an USB-eLicenser which is pre-loaded with a 25 hours license. It allows you to use Cubase up to 25 hours of non-consecutive operation time. The remaining time will be displayed each time you start Cubase. Please make sure to activate your Cubase license permanently within this timeframe, as it will not run without a permanent license.

For further details, please read:

http://www.steinberg.net/activate/

The USB-eLicenser authorization is also covered in detail in the printed Quick Start Manual as well as in the Operation Manual PDF.

First Cubase 6.5 start up

The first time you start Cubase 6.5 it can take a while until the loading process is finished. Cubase needs to gather all components and plug-ins you may have installed. Subsequent starts of the application will be much faster after that.

Additional technical information

Using PowerPC plug-ins on Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6 / 10.7) systems

Since the release of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, the OS component “Rosetta” is no longer installed by default.

The included PowerPC Cubase 6.5 plug-ins “Embracer”, “Monologue” and “Tonic” are not installed by default but can be enabled by clicking the “Customize” button in the installer. Steinberg recommends installing “Rosetta” before starting Cubase for the first time. More details can be found at:

https://www.steinberg.net/en/support/knowledgebase_new/show_details/kb_show/mac-os-x-snow-leopard-some-older-plug-ins-are-missing

Please note that since the release of Mac OS X 10.7 the OS component “Rosetta” is no longer available from Apple. Therefore PowerPC plug-ins cannot be used in Cubase at all under Mac OS X 10.7.

Using the Cubase 6.5 64-bit version

Under Mac OS X 10.6 / 10.7:

Cubase will start as 32-bit application by default. If you want to start Cubase as 64-bit version, select the Cubase application icon and then choose “Get Info” from the context menu. In the Get Info window un-check “Open in 32-bit mode”. When using Cubase in 64-bit mode, the following features are not available:

• Print functions: Use the “Export Scores” function from the menu >File >Export instead and then print the output file with e.g. Preview included in Mac OS X or start Cubase in 32-bit mode if you need to print scores.

• PowerPC plug-ins incl. “Tonic”, “Embracer” and “Monologue” are only available when using Cubase 6.5 in 32-bit mode under Mac OS X 10.6 or lower (see above).

• The VST Bridge allows you to load Intel-compiled 32-bit VST 2.4 plug-ins only. PowerPC plug-ins and VST3 32-bit plug-ins are not supported. Please check with the respective plug-in manufacturer if and when your favorite plug-ins will be available in native 64-bit format.

Page 9: Cubase 6.5 ReadMe

ReadMe Page 9 Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH

Under Windows 7 64-bit:

Users of Windows 7 64-bit editions have the choice of installing either the 32-bit version and/or the native 64-bit version. Both versions can be also installed in parallel.

When working with the 64-bit version of Cubase, you may encounter issues with third-party plug-ins if they are not in compliance with the User Account Control (UAC) feature of Windows. Plug-ins affected by this are e.g. based on the “SynthEdit audio plug-in creator”. In such cases, please try to start Cubase with administrator privileges.

The 64-bit version of Cubase contains the VST Bridge, which allows you to run VST plug-ins and instruments, if they’re not available in 64-bit format.

Please note that VST 3 plug-ins in 32-bit won’t be available using the 64-bit version of Cubase. 32-bit plug-ins based on Waves Waveshell are not supported.

Plug-in compatibility with older Cubase projects

Some old plug-ins are no longer part of the Cubase installation:

HALion ONE:

HALion ONE is no longer installed by default and has been replaced by HALion Sonic SE. If you have Cubase 5 or Sequel still installed on your system, HALion ONE will be available in Cubase 6.5. If you install Cubase 6.5 with no prior Cubase 5 or Sequel installation available on the system, HALion ONE will be unavailable.

However, you may want to install it if you want to load Cubase or Sequel projects using it, or if you use content sets requiring this VST instrument (e.g. VST Sound Instrument Set Synthesizers). To install HALion ONE, start the Cubase installer via the Cubase Start Center from DVD, and enable HALion ONE in the “Customize” section.

Please note that even though HALion ONE and its content will be available after that, VST presets won’t be installed! The content is just provided to ensure compatibility with older Cubase 5 projects. The HALion ONE sound library has been included in HALion Sonic SE, so none of your favorite sounds are lost.

Page 10: Cubase 6.5 ReadMe

ReadMe Page 10 Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH

SPL DeEsser:

This plug-in has been replaced with a current VST 3 version named DeEsser.

SurroundPan:

This plug-in has been replaced by the VST 3 version Surround Panner v5 and offers much more functionality. The old SurroundPan plug-in is still included for compatibility reasons but will only be loaded with older project files requiring it.

Other legacy plug-ins:

Other plug-ins from earlier Cubase versions are provided for you on the Steinberg website in case required for compatibility reasons.

Notes about using SoundCloud

When you upload your mixes from Cubase to your SoundCloud account, your web browser will open and the SoundCloud website will ask you to connect Cubase to your SoundCloud account. Once you have confirmed this connection, it will be valid for several hours, so you do not need to re-connect Cubase with every other upload.

To disable the connection between Cubase and your SoundCloud account, log in to SoundCloud and click on “Settings”->“Connections”->“Revoke access” button.

Please note that the web browser Opera is not supported for uploading audio material from Cubase to SoundCloud.
