Artist Series pros calling CU musicians to the stageFor nearly eight decades, the Artist Series has brought some of the world’s top musicians, dancers, theater troupes and personalities to Boulder’s doorstep.

Hundreds of artists, from poet Carl Sandburg in 1939, to Paul Robeson as Othello and the Trapp Family Singers of “Sound of Music” fame in the 1940s, conductor and violinist Isaac Stern in 1970 and Ladysmith Black Mambazo and MOMIX in the 21st century have graced the stage at Macky Auditorium.

And in recent years, some have specifically requested that CU-Boulder College of Music students join them in creating an evening of scintillating entertainment.

This year, eight musicians will play Mozart, Beethoven and Mendelssohn for the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company’s Play and Play on Jan. 22. And on April 2, the CU Symphony Orchestra will accompany platinum-selling alt-rock sensation Natalie Merchant in a performance of her songs.

“Any time you get to collaborate across the arts it’s a worthwhile and exciting opportunity,” says Zachary Reaves, cellist for the graduate-student ensemble Altius Quartet, which will play Jan. 22. “And it’s really great to see a dance company using live music; a lot of them don’t these days.”

Playing with top-notch acts before a large audience can also be a valuable experience for students who hope to perform professionally after graduation.

“Much of the work our students will do as professional musicians will be in the popular-commercial genre. It is increasingly important for our students to be comfortable and conversant with various styles, beyond traditional classical music,” says Gary Lewis, director of orchestral studies. “This opportunity will be invaluable to them and it will be great fun to collaborate with such a wonderful artist as Natalie Merchant.”

CU guitar festival strikes a global chord In just over three years, Nicolò Spera has put CU-Boulder on the map as a true global mecca for classical-guitar teaching, performance and competi-tion.

When he arrived in 2011 to launch the College of Music’s classical-guitar program, the renowned Italian performer defied conventional wisdom on easing into a new job and launched plans to host a guitar festival and competi-tion on campus.

“It was one of my big-gest dreams,” says Spera, assistant professor in the Ritter Family Classical Guitar program, “but I knew it would take a long time. Often when you launch something new it doesn’t work. You hope it does more or less well and hope to have a second one.”

As it turns out, there was no need to fret. The CU International Guitar Fes-tival debuted in February 2013, attracting 41 top performers from around the world, including China, Serbia and Latin America. The winners took home thousands of dollars in prizes and returned to Boulder in 2014 to teach and perform.

The second bi-annual festival will take place Feb. 19-21, featuring compe-tition among 40 to 50 of the world’s most talented guitarists, as well as master

classes and performances by Brazil’s Assad Brothers — “(T)he best two-guitar team in existence, maybe even in history,” according to the Washington Post — the Italian SoloDuo and Nigel North, hailed as “the greatest lute player of all time” by England’s Birming-ham Post.

“Basically, we have the two greatest classical guitar duos in the world, the Assad Brothers, the greatest of the 20th century, and SoloDuo, representing the future,” Spera says. “I am so grateful and ecstatic for the fantastic collaboration with the Artist Series and Macky Auditorium, which bring to Colorado the greatest artists in the world.”

The guitar festival is supported by grants from the Roser Visiting Artist Program and the CU President’s Fund for the Humanities as well as private donations. Spera’s success recently inspired CU-Boulder alumni Michele “Mikhy” and Mike Ritter to endow the classical-guitar program.

Brazilian-born brothers Sérgio and Odair Assad have set the benchmark for all other guitarists by creating a new standard of guitar innovation, ingenuity and expression. Their exceptional artistry and uncanny ensemble playing come from both a family rich in Brazilian musical tradition and from studies with the guitar/lutenist Monina Távora (1921-2011), a disciple of Andrés Segovia.

In addition to setting new performance standards, the Assads have played a major role in creating and introducing new music for two guitars. Their virtuosity has inspired a wide range of composers to write for them including Astor Piazzolla, Terry Riley, Radamés Gnattali, Marlos Nobre, Nikita Koshkin, Roland Dyens, Jorge Morel, Edino Krieger and Francisco Mignone. Now Sérgio Assad is adding to their repertoire by composing music for the duo and for various musical partners both with symphony orchestra and in recitals. They have worked extensively with such renowned artists as Yo-Yo Ma, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Fernando Suarez Paz, Paquito D’Rivera, Gidon Kremer and Dawn Upshaw.

The Assads began playing the guitar together at an early age and went on to study for seven years with Dona Monina. Their international career began with a major prize at the 1979 Young Artists Competition in Bratislava. Odair is based in Brussels, where he teaches at Ecole Supérieure des Arts. Sérgio resides in San Francisco, where he is on the faculty of the SF Conservatory.

The Assads’ repertoire includes original music composed by Sérgio Assad and his re-workings of folk and jazz music as well as Latin music of almost every style. Their standard classical repertoire includes transcriptions of the great Baroque keyboard literature of Bach, Rameau and Scarlatti and adaptations of works by such diverse figures as Gershwin, Ginastera and Debussy. Their touring programs are always a compelling blend of styles, periods and cultures.

The Assads are also recognized as prolific recording artists, primarily for the Nonesuch and GHA labels. In 2001, Nonesuch Records released Sérgio and Odair Assad Play Piazzolla, which later won a Latin Grammy. Their seventh Nonesuch recording, released in the fall 2007, is called Jardim Abandonado after a piece by Antonio Carlos Jobim. It was nominated for Best Classical Album, and Sérgio went on to win the Latin Grammy for his composition, Tahiiyya Li Oussilina.

A Nonesuch collaboration with Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg in 2000 featured a collection of pieces based on traditional and Gypsy folk tunes from around the world. In 2003, Sérgio Assad wrote a triple concerto for this trio that has been performed with the orchestras of São Paulo, Seattle and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. In the summer of 2004, Sérgio and Odair arranged a very special tour featuring three generations of the Assad family. The family presented a wide variety of Brazilian music featuring their father, Jorge Assad (1924-2011) on the mandolin and the voice of mother, Angelina Assad. GHA Records has released a live recording and a DVD of the Assad family live at Brussels’ Palais des Beaux-Arts. In the

2006-07 season, the Assad Brothers performed Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto Madrigal for Two Guitars and Sérgio’s arrangement of Piazzolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. The Assads were also featured performers on James Newton Howard’s soundtrack to the movie Duplicity, starring Julia Roberts and Clive Owen. In the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, the brothers toured a project entitled De Volta as Raizes (Back to Our Roots) featuring Lebanese-American singer Christiane Karam, percussionist Jamey Haddad and composer/pianist Clarice Assad.

In February 2011, Odair Assad performed his first solo guitar concert tour in North America featuring concerts in New York and Montreal. Sergio Assad has written another concerto for his duo, called Phases. It was premiered with the Seattle Symphony in February 2011. In the meantime he has been nominated for yet two more Latin Classical Grammys in the Best Classical Composition Category for his piece for the LA Guitar Quartet and the Delaware Symphony entitled, Interchange and for Maracaipe for the Beijing Guitar Duo. In the fall of 2011, five of the members of the Assad family—Sergio, Odair, Badi, Clarice and Carolina—joined together again for another evening of new and favorite Brazilian works. Their tour included stops in Qatar, Sweden, Germany, The Netherlands (to open the Brazil Festival) at The Amsterdam Concertgebouw and three concerts in Belgium with a finale at Le Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels.

The Assad Brothers collaboration with cellist Yo-Yo Ma is ongoing. In 2003 the Brazilian record Obrigado Brazil was released featuring Rosa Passos, Egberto Gismonti and Cyro Baptista. Sérgio arranged several of the works on the disc, which captured a Grammy in 2004. In 2009, the brothers were featured on Yo-Yo Ma’s chart topping release, Songs of Joy & Peace, which features other guest artists as diverse as James Taylor and Dave Brubeck. and children Clarice, Rodrigo and Carolina. The release topped both the classical and the mainstream Billboard charts and won a Grammy for best classical crossover. In April 2012, Sergio and Odair will tour North America with Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Kathryn Stott, in a program of Latin American works as arranged by Sergio as well as some of his original compositions, highlighted by concerts at the new Smith Center in Las Vegas and Chicago’s Symphony Hall.

In the fall of 2012 the brothers return to the University of Arizona in Tucson as visiting artists with support from the D’Addario

Family Foundation. They will headline the 4th International Tucson Guitar Festival with two performances at Holsclaw Hall and master classes for advanced guitar students. In the spring of 2013, Sergio and Odair toured as a much-loved trio with the inimitable Paquito D’Rivera as well as a record release of their project, Dances from the New World.

Future plans include performances of a new duo guitar concerto written for Sergio and Odair by Sergio’s daughter Clarice Assad, to be premiered at the Pro-Musica Chamber Orchestra in Columbus, Ohio.

In 1985, Romero Lubambo came to the United States and brought with him a new sound in Brazilian jazz guitar.

Lubambo’s guitar playing unites the styles and rhythms of his native Brazilian musical heritage with his fluency in the American jazz tradition to form a distinctive new sound.

From the cool, sophisticated rhythms of his native Brazil to hard bop, Lubambo is a guitarist who’s comfortable in any musical setting. He is an uncommonly gifted soloist and musical improviser with a steady stream of unpredictably creative musical thoughts and the virtuosity to

deliver them ever so tastefully.

After arriving in New York City, Romero quickly established himself as a “first call” session and touring guitarist who was in demand not only for his authentic Brazilian sound, but also for his command with a variety of styles.

Lubambo has performed and recorded with many outstanding artists, including Dianne Reeves, Michael Brecker, Yo-Yo Ma, Kathleen Battle, Diana Krall, Herbie Mann, Wynton Marsalis, Gal Costa, Kurt Elling, Kenny Barron, Luciana Souza, Cyro Baptista, Sergio and Odair Assad, Ivan Lins, Grover Washington Jr., Vernon Reid, Flora Purim and Airto, Paquito D’Rivera, Harry Belafonte, Larry Coryell, Gato Barbieri, Leny Andrade, James Carter, Paula Robison, Dave Weckl, Jason Miles and Cesar Camargo Mariano, among many others.

He has also established himself as a composer and performer on his own critically acclaimed recording projects as well as on those of Trio Da Paz, a Brazilian jazz trio Lubambo formed with Nilson Matta and Duduka da Fonseca.

ABOUT THE EKLUND FAMILY OPERA PROGRAMRecognizing the importance of the arts and live-vocal performance in an increasingly distracted world, long-time Boulder resident Paul Eklund made a generous gift in October to help establish a $2 million endowment at the CU-Boulder College of Music. Funding from the endowment will help support three opera productions each academic year, the CU New Opera Workshop and an opera-scenes program for new students.

• Parking is available in the Euclid Avenue Autopark, Lot 310, and Lot 204 for $4 per evening or weekend day. Lot 380 (near Macky) is reserved for VIP members of the Artist Series. Drop-off and handicap parking is available near all venues. For more information about the best parking options for each venue, please call the box office at 303-492-8008.

• Food is permitted in seating areas of Macky Auditorium and the Mary Rippon Outdoor Theatre, but prohibited in other campus venues unless otherwise noted.

• Photographic and recording devices are prohibited.

• All programs, artists and prices are subject to change.

• All sales are final; no refunds. Subscribers may exchange tickets for another night or performance with no exchange fee; single-ticket exchanges are subject to a $3 per ticket exchange fee.
