lep.co.uk 26 Evening Post, Tuesday, May 26, 2009 What do Euro elections mean for business? WITH just over a week before we go to the polls, Lancashire businesses should be keen to ask European election can- didates what they can do to help them during these tough economic times. We must realise that Europe has more of a say in British affairs than ever and working together, politicians in Brus- sels and Strasbourg can provide a timely boost to help ailing businesses, particularly small and medium-sized ones struggling to make ends meet. For a start, these businesses must en- sure our European politicians cam- paign on Britain's behalf for a fair share of the EU's £4bn rescue package for smaller businesses. We also need better laws to help small- er and medium-sized businesses sur- vive with less red tape and proper ac- cess to grants and better markets. This also means tax-free profits for in- vestment, new incentives and tax breaks and a postponement of all new employment and business legislation. I back the European Commission adopting the Small Business Act de- signed to tick these boxes to some ex- tent but we still need to see more prac- tical measures and that includes tack- ling long-term problems such as cli- mate change and carbon management. Small businesses are the heartbeat of Europe covering 99.8% of the conti- nent's economy so it is key that Europe focuses on helping them out, especially as they secure jobs and prospects for the entire continent in the future. So businesses should think long and hard and ask tough questions of all candidates before voting in this crucial election. PAUL HEATHCOTE Making light work of a city centre site CHRIS VISSER Only one office space remains in building A newly-built office block in Preston city centre is proving to be a big hit with interested businesses. Only one office is remaining at the Walker Street Light Buildings site developed by Manchester-based Gladedale. The offices are based on the ground and first floor levels with 68 apart- ments above. So far, Kaplan Financial has rented 608 sq ft of space on a three-year lease, and two first floor suites of 608 sq ft and 1,350 sq ft respectively are let to Presentation and Design Ser- vices Ltd and New Bailey Chambers, both on three year leases. David Patterson, of Gladedale, said, “There has been a healthy interest in the units and we are ultimately very happy that three out of the four units have already been snapped up not long after completion. “The units are placed in an excellent position for easy, quick access to the Law Courts and into the city centre and all the amenities that can be found there.” The remaining unit is 1,350 sq ft and is located on the ground floor. A spokesman for Robert Pinkus and Co, acting on behalf of the landlords, said: “The building provides prospective tenants with a central re- ception area with toilets, lifts and stairs for access to the upper floors. “The suite will be fitted out to a shell form so that occupiers will have the opportunity to fit out the accommo- dation specific to their own require- ments.” For further information on the Light Buildings call Mark Harrison on 01772 769000 or visit www.pinkus.co.uk Walker Street Light Buildings Business Business Finance Business Services Business to Let Industrial & Commercial Property To Let Office Equipment T TO O L LE ET T M MA AW WD DE ES SL LE EY Y Offices & Units From £50 P/W Inc.
