GWS Tests Carrier Networks Ahead of Super Mobility

G lobal Wireless Solutions Inc. (GWS) is back and at it again, testing the halls of CTIA Super Mobility 2016. As the largest, most experienced independent provider of network benchmark

data, GWS is performing rigorous testing to show a user’s experience during the show.

GWS is testing all the major wireless carriers here at Super Mobility: AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon. GWS technicians will cover every inch of the show floor to capture both VoLTE and HD data in order to get the most reliable results possible. On Tuesday the team tested a largely unloaded network ahead of the influx of attendees. Today, the

test specialists will be returning to the convention center to test the facility, common spaces and meeting rooms again as the strain on each network inevitably increases. During the pre-show testing, all voice calls were successful on all major providers. All providers delivered HD-level voice results while GWS tested their VoLTE and HD networks. GWS performed audio MOS testing using wideband codec reference files (to test HD voice). T-Mobile delivered the best voice quality, with AT&T and Verizon just one step behind. Sprint delivered fewer HD quality voice samples

The Future Is Made Up of Five Screens

B y now a three-screen strategy is a must for anyone

in the business of media consumption. It’s certainly one of the ways broadband providers are participating in the market place. Some see three screens – TV, mobile, digital – as the objective, but they don’t realize that those three screens are just an intermediary step to full market engagement. Ultimately, broadband providers are going to pursue a five-screen solution, and advertisers will pursue a six-screen solution (advertisers see outdoor signage as an additional screen).

In the future, the first additional screen – the 4th screen - will be in the autonomous car. Once we have autonomous cars, in all likelihood autonomous electric cars, the up to 46 minutes per day[i] we spend in a car will be a new peak period of intense mobile data usage. Suddenly, mobile connectivity that was mostly about streaming video to keep the kids quiet in the backseat will transmit and receive massive amounts of information to keep the car running smoothly, avoid traffic and accidents, adjust engine functions and more. It’s called datamotives. That it is the logic behind Apple’s electric vehicles (EV)

initiative and its focus on autonomous driving. But Americans aren’t the only ones thinking like this. Chinese company Le Eco is active with two EVs and likely enter the market with a more comprehensive vision than anyone else on how the five screens will fit together. While Tesla is the clear leader in EVs, it needs to partner to match the complete system integration for end-to-end solutions.

The second additional screen – the 5th screen - is Virtual Reality (VR) and,

even more importantly for mobile, Augmented Reality (AR.) While anyone who has tried VR with an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive gets it and appreciates how it transforms home entertainment, the use cases for the customer equipment are unclear outside of protected spaces. VR’s strength to replace reality with a virtual one is also its weakness as it makes the wearer oblivious to the real world. Good luck crossing that street with it.

Augmented reality on the other hand is the perfect overlay of a virtual information canvas on the real world. Anyone who has a newer car with HUD display instinctively gets it. The HUD display superimposes automobile speed, directions and station names when you switch radio stations on the windshield, reducing

distractions while driving. There is no more need to take the eye off the road because the car displays all the information on a single screen. Once you drive a car with HUD AR, it is quite noticeable when you drive a car without it and you have a little surge of joy when back in the car with the augmented reality.

While we see a sputtering start with Google Glass, the success of Pokemon Go is lowering the barrier for other companies to enter the AR space. Google Glass was ahead of its time – especially socially – by being an engineer’s answer to the problem. Releasing it before it was ready was probably not a great idea, especially with how transformational such a product can be. The AR glasses dramatically raised awareness of the technology and, as with every revolutionary technology, there was both excitement at the prospect and fear of what we can do with it.

Interweaving what we see in the real world with a series of data sources has the potential to create positive outcomes ranging from city guides making you a native in any new place to facial recognition overlays for law enforcement to capture a criminal on the run.

Why Fingerprint, Iris Scanners Work for Mobile and Palm, Voice Biometrics Don’t

T his year has been full of chatter around biometric security measures for mobile, especially with the launch of Samsung’s

Galaxy Note 7 and its built-in iris scanner last month.

But while the buzz has included everything from palm and voice recognition to eye scanners and fingerprint readers, one expert said there are certain factors that determine whether these technologies are truly viable in a smartphone.

When looking at biometric identification methods, Delta ID CEO Salil Prabhakar said there are two main considerations for mobile applications: security and convenience.

Prabhakar said, for example, voice recognition technology is best suited for use on a phone to verify the identities of callers dialing in for customer service or banking. However, in a mobile application, the technology becomes less than ideal. Prabhakar said voice recognition doesn’t work well in noisy environments and quality can vary from microphone to microphone – which means calling for bank information from Starbucks might become a frustrating experience.

Prabhakar said palm reading technology comes with similar issues, noting the awkwardness of lifting your hand for an ID photo at login and the fact that the feature might not work in extreme lighting situations.

But with fingerprint and iris scanning, things are different.

First, Prabhakar said both methods offer users one of the things they want the most: convenience. With fingerprint scanners, the phone is already in your hand. Similarly, iris scanning technology can utilize a device’s front-facing camera, which would already be pointed in the right direction.

Second, fingerprint and iris scanners offer the same level of security as a four or six digit PIN, respectively, making them extra secure, Prabhakar said. Iris scanning, in particular, is more secure because the measurement comes from a part of the eye that is protected by the cornea, where fingerprint scans have to combat the possibility of dirty, greasy or roughened digits.

Hoyos Labs Biometric Scientist Asem Othman agreed with Prabhakar’s assessment of the latter, calling iris scanning “one of the most reliable and accurate” biometric verification methods.

“Iris recognition systems are gaining interest because the iris’s rich texture offers a strong biometric cue for recognizing individuals,” Othman said. “The iris is the only internal organ readily visible from the

outside. Thus, unlike fingerprints, capturing the iris biometric is like taking a picture and

facial expressions and aging effects cannot easily alter its pattern.”

And it seems iris scanning is a technology that works for the vast majority of people.

In India, where the government has conducted fingerprint and iris scans on nearly a billion people for a massive biometric database, the Center for Global Development found iris scans were only unsuccessful in 0.33 percent of the population.

While it seems only a tiny portion of the

population would have difficulty with either fingerprint or iris scanning, Prabhakar said the solution would be the inclusion of both biometric capabilities on mobile devices. One device, the HO Elite X3, already offers both factors, and Prabhakar said more cell phones and tablets with both fingerprint and iris scanning technology are expected to come to market later this year.

According to Prabhakar, the use cases for such technology are still in their infancy, but there are a number of possibilities on the immediate horizon.

While fingerprint technology is currently being utilized in the mobile payments space, and soon – thanks, in part, to Apple – the ecommerce space, Prabhakar said he also sees fingerprint and iris scans as viable options for enterprise, finance and other applications, like healthcare, that require two vector identification.

“For healthcare especially in U.S., where there is two factor authentication, it makes a lot of sense because there are only three levels of authentication: something you know (like a PIN or other personal knowledge), something you have (like a key fob) and something you are (biometrics),” Prabhakar said. “So my device can serve as one factor – server can authenticate my device by putting a cookie on it – and then the biometric serves as the second factor. It’s a much more convenient, seamless experience for the user and still offers the enterprise side its secure two factor authentication.” l

Carriers Take Blame for Poor Wi-Fi Service

W i-Fi is everywhere - in homes, at Starbucks, on planes - and wireless carriers haven’t hesitated to

capitalize on the ubiquity of this technology.According to a Juniper Research forecast,

Wi-Fi offloading will account for nearly 60 percent of mobile data traffic by 2019.

But while carriers may reap Wi-Fi’s benefits, they also assume much of the blame for poor performance.

A survey conducted by Procera Networks earlier this year found a third of global mobile subscribers have switched carriers due to perceived network quality issues despite acknowledging that much of their mobile time is spent on Wi-Fi.

Survey respondents - nearly 60 percent of whom were from Europe or North America - were asked to rate their mobile experiences across a different variety of uses, including web surfing, social media and video streaming. Just 15 percent of European subscribers and slightly more than 10 percent of North American subscribers gave their video streaming experience an “A” rating. Around 58 percent of all respondents rated their video streaming experience with either a “B” or “C” grade. Video streaming also popped up frequently as one of the most frustrating mobile experiences for survey respondents.

Though respondents reported they were connected via Wi-Fi for 50 percent to 80 percent of the day, just over 54 percent said they feel operators are most at fault when they are unhappy with their mobile experience. Only around 10 percent of respondents placed the blame for poor mobile experience on the shoulders of their Wi-Fi network.

Further, almost 90 percent of respondents said their typical Wi-Fi connection is either equal to or better than their mobile network.

And this dissonance has real consequences. Nearly 47 percent of respondents said they either have or want to switch mobile providers

because of perceived poor network quality.

“The survey indicates that subscribers disregard which technology is delivering the service, seeing their operator as responsible overall,” Procera Networks Senior

Director of Subscriber Experience Marketing Thomas Vasen said. “It shows that true convergence is a reality for the user - further consolidation of mobile and fixed/Wi-Fi networks will be a key strategy in securing the quality of experience that an operator delivers to their subscribers.”

According to Procera’s Vice President of Global Marketing Cam Cullen, the survey results indicate the need for operators to more thoroughly address Wi-Fi coverage for their subscribers.

Cullen said consumers increasingly expect Wi-Fi networks to deliver a quality experience, whether it’s free or not. And as the consumption of mobile video increases, Cullen said smartphone users will expect networks - Wi-Fi or otherwise - to deliver the same quality video experience that they get with voice calls today.

“Operators that deliver a more comprehensive coverage strategy - that is operators that have either their own Wi-Fi networks or partnerships with Wi-Fi companies - offer a more attractive combination for consumers,” Cullen said.

“Customers increasingly expect a good experience on Wi-Fi

networks, so operators who run these Wi-Fi networks are

going to address that in their infrastructure.”

Though he said most major carriers either have their own Wi-Fi networks or partnerships with Wi-Fi

companies like Boingo, Cullen said he can see a

future where services akin to Wi-Fi MVNOs spring up.

“That demand opens the opportunity for someone who has a pretty good sized Wi-Fi network around the world to partner up with people who do not have Wi-Fi hotspots set up who want to offer that service to their customers,” Cullen said. “So just like we have MVNOs in the mobile space you’ll start to see these Wi-Fi aggregators become more

Why Encryption’s 15 Minutes Of Fame Could Be Hurting Mobile Security

D riven in part by the massive growth of Ever since NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden first leaked that

the U.S. government was surveilling private communications and ushered in a new era of digital paranoia, technology companies have been bending over backward to try and convince their customers that they are in support of strong privacy policies.

As a result, the number of businesses adopting encryption policies has exploded. U.S. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper claims Snowden’s revelation has accelerated companies’ efforts to implement strong encryption by seven years. Apple iPhones now have longer and more complex passcodes linked to underlying encryption, making them more difficult to hack. Facebook’s WhatsApp and other messaging apps like Signal, Viber and Telegram have adopted end-to-end encryption protocols, meaning only their users are able to view communications.

But encryption still doesn’t guarantee unbreakable security and, with enough resources, it can be bypassed. Take the high-profile Apple vs. FBI dispute. Apple refused to unlock Syed Farook’s iPhone, because it believed that creating a backdoor would jeopardize First Amendment freedoms and undermine the security of all iPhones. So the FBI hired a third-party to bypass encryption on the device, accomplishing their short-term goal and proving that a cyber criminal with less noble intentions could easily do the same.

Encryption isn’t foolproofTarget and OPM are perfect examples of major data breaches occurring despite advances in encryption technology. Attacks like these happen because sophisticated cyber criminals who gain remote access to a device (or in Target’s case, a POS system) are often able to decode encryption or bypass it all together. Like any simple security tactic, encryption alone can’t stop a determined hacker from penetrating a mobile device -- it’s

just the first layer of technology they need to bypass in order to hit their target.

One of the most common techniques cyber criminals use to hack a device is uncovering mobile security flaws. For example, in March, a team of researchers from Johns Hopkins University found a flaw in iMessage that was eventually fixed in the iOS 9.3 update, which made it possible for a third party to intercept and decrypt images and video stored on the device. Additionally, a free messaging app called Telegram promoted its “Secret Chat” function as a way for users to send end-to-end encrypted messages. But by simulating an attack originating from an app/client side vulnerability that gains additional permissions by running a kernel or root exploit, Zimperium was able to uncover and read Secret Chats written in plain-text in the process memory. Not so safe after all.

Mixed messagesWhile encryption received a lot of media attention during the Apple vs. FBI dispute, big companies like Facebook and Google have struggled to implement strong encryption policies without impacting their business objectives. Both companies are conflicted between offering extra privacy features like encryption or adding new capabilities like artificial intelligence into their applications.

In May, Facebook received some backlash from consumers after announcing that its Messenger application will offer encryption as an opt-in option because making it a default feature would interrupt the new machine learning components of the app. Similarly, Google just released a new messaging app called Allo and also offered encryption as an opt-in feature. Privacy activists are claiming that the app is unsafe because it doesn’t include end-to-end encryption as a default feature. Even Edward Snowden weighed in via Twitter. However, Google made this decision so that its machine learning technology can analyze content in users’ messages, interact with the new Google assistant, and deliver

auto-replies and suggestions, such as, if users are talking about restaurants, it will give recommendations for places nearby. Both companies are still offering encryption as a security option, but it’s up to users to turn on the feature within the app for extra privacy.

Don’t believe the hypeWhile encryption is a critical component of security, it’s not enough to protect mobile devices. To adequately address the complexity of mobile security, enterprises must intelligently prioritize on-device protection, including securing apps and endpoints on the network to enable mobile threat detection. Looking toward the future, devices will become even more complicated, as more “things” will be connected to the internet and consumers will suffer the consequences of a fragmented multi-player security system -- encryption alone will not protect users.

As companies continue to develop new technologies, new risks are being exposed and cyber criminals are becoming even more sophisticated. Not to mention, live data, or the type of information users interact with directly, is never encrypted and is an easy target for attackers. Unless users are detecting this type of threat via intrusions on their device, network or applications then they are susceptible to attacks.

Brands need to shift their security strategy in order to addresses these risks and protect against the next generation of emerging threats. And while encryption should be included in this strategy, it shouldn’t be relied upon as the be-all and end-all approach. How Carriers Can Avoid the “Dumb Pipe” Data Trap

Data is hot right now. Driven in part by the massive growth of

mobile video, Ericsson has predicted monthly data usage per smartphone will rise from less than 5 GB in 2015 to 22 GB per month by 2021. And with such a massive surge of consumer demand, the carriers are scrambling to offer the best network and come up with newer and better data offers.

But in that scramble lies a trap.According to ItsOn CEO Greg Raleigh,

carriers who focus only on differentiation rather than innovation run the risk of becoming a “dumb pipe.” That is, in the customer’s eyes, the carriers could become nothing more than the infrastructure to move data with no added value.

“A ‘dumb pipe’ implies that a carrier’s services would simply be seen as a non-relevant and commoditized service,” Raleigh explained. “That would mean that customers only look at them as a means to an end with little brand loyalty and most likely stagnant or declining revenue growth.”

According to Recon Analytics’ Roger Entner, it is this exact scenario that carriers have been fighting for the past 10 years.

“That’s why you see AT&T buying DirecTV and getting into [the Internet of Things], that’s why you see Verizon buying Yahoo and AOL, that’s why they want to

get back into advertising to avoid that dumb pipe scenario where you’re only as good as your connection,” Entner said. “That’s the nightmare scenario. So you want to have something more than just ‘I’m the fastest connection.’”

In addition to diversifying, Entner said Verizon has managed to avoid the dumb pipe trap thanks to the timing of network advances. Right when the dumb pipe is about to catch up with Verizon in one generation of technology, he said, the carrier moves on to the next.

Raleigh said T-Mobile has also successfully avoided this pitfall so far by listening to customer grievances and trying to connect with customer needs in a meaningful way through its Un-carrier campaign.

But Raleigh said even T-Mobile needs to be careful. It’s current offerings, he said, are “only beginning to scratch the surface” of how carriers can - and will need to - engage with consumers.

“Differentiation does not always mean innovation,” Raleigh said. “An operator could be differentiated as the cheapest in the industry, but that doesn’t imply innovation. When you look at the successes of companies like Amazon, Facebook or Uber, they were innovative because they materially changed how people shopped, consumed information and traveled. So, while the ‘Un-

carrier’ campaign has been a very innovative marketing initiative, giving away free products and services isn’t a breakthrough in innovation.”

But is being a dumb pipe all bad? Entner said no, pointing out that while carriers have generally failed to avoid becoming data pipes it hasn’t hurt their profitability. Especially in a data hungry world, being the conduit for data is a profitable business, he said.

Still, it’s becoming harder and harder to be a sustainable business as a dumb pipe, Entner said.

According to Raleigh, “carriers are at a watershed point” where they will need to “choose to become operators who deliver valuable services or simply a generic data connection.” And Value, he said, is all about context and customer control.

“Customers want a contextual and transparent mobile experience that is enjoyable and gives them control,” Raleigh said. “Carriers need to be able to engage contextually with end-users, adapt quickly and grow beyond their traditional services all at a lower cost. For that to happen, carriers need to adopt a market ready technology solution that addresses rapid service agility, revenue growth opportunities, low cost to execute and quick integration. Most importantly, carriers need to deliver a great digital user experience.” l

Divergence: Where the Wearable Meets Your Wrist

A s technology advances, an increasing amount of diversity is being injected into the wearable

device space.But while new technologies like

connected eyewear and clothing are poised for massive growth, arm-bound wearables are expected to continue their dominance of the market. The thing is, there’s more than one kind of wearable for your wrist.

According to a May report from International Data Corporation (IDC), there is a clear divide within the wearables market when it comes to smartwatches and basic wrist bands.

“There’s a clear bifurcation and growth within the wearables market,” IDC Mobile Device Trackers senior research analyst Jitesh Ubrani said. “Smart watches attempt to offer holistic experiences by being everything to everyone, while basic wearables like fitness bands…have a focused approach and often offer specialized use cases.”

Despite a second-quarter slump in smartwatch shipments, IDC has said the smartwatch’s versatility will help fuel double-digit smartwatch growth over the next few years as wristband growth fades to single digits. Within four years, wristbands are expected to cede their number one position in market share and shipments to smartwatches.

According to IDC’s forecast, smartwatches will experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 27.8 percent through 2020 to hit 111.3 million shipments and just over 52 percent of the market share, up from

41.8 million shipments and 41 percent of the market share in 2016. Basic wrist wearables, on the other hand, are expected to experience a CAGR of just 4.3 percent to reach 60.8 million shipments. The market share for wrist bands is expected to drop from 50.5 percent in 2016 to just 28.5 percent in 2020.

And that means good things for

smartwatch app developers.“The trajectory of the wearables

market signals a strong opportunity for developers,” IDC’s Wearables research manager Ramon T. Llamas said in a June report. “Applications increase the value and utility of a wearable, and users want to see more than just their health and fitness results. News, weather, sports, social media, and Internet of Things (IoT) applications will all have a place on a wearable. And, when combined with cellular connectivity, users will not have to take out their smartphones to get the latest information. All they will need to do is glance at their wearable.”

But IDC said another split is on the horizon: Smartwatches versus basic watches.

According to IDC, future growth in the smartwatch category will come from the rise of basic watches. Like a hybrid between the smartwatches and wristbands of today, IDC said basic watches will offer some form of fitness or sleep tracking without the ability to run third party applications on the watch itself. l

Lurie said. “But in the prepaid space we’re gaining $40+ ARPUs with very low churn and high customer satisfaction. I’ll trade that low $40 customer for a $35 customer with similar churn and high customer satisfaction all day long.”

According to Lurie, the shift toward prepaid doesn’t reflect any preference on AT&T’s part, but rather the opening of more choice for consumers in the market. Instead of being a last resort option for low-income or credit-strained individuals as it has been in the past, Lurie said prepaid now offers consumers choice and quality service and devices.

“The big change is prepaid became a choice,” Lurie said. “A lot of people are saying let’s talk about post[paid], but it’s about branded additions. You’ve got to start to focus on all branded because customers are making the decision about how they do business with us.”

Unlimited for all is a big question markWhile AT&T did revive unlimited wireless service for customers who also sign up for its DirecTV or U-verse products, Lurie said unlimited for all is still up in the air.

According to Lurie, AT&T’s rollout of unlimited service to more than 5 million customers through the aforementioned offer went smoothly. The company prepared in advance with forecasting and models, he said, and was ready for the bump in usage.

While Lurie said a network in “phenomenal” shape could certainly handle unlimited for all, it’s more a question of demand. The DirecTV offer, he said, was a way of testing the waters.

“We haven’t made a decision yet,” Lurie said. “The reality is we’re going to listen to our customers and make that decision down the line.”

5G is awesome, but it’ll be a while yetTrue, AT&T is among those gearing up for 5G. The carrier has already announced 5G trials with Ericsson, Intel and Nokia, and has begun lab work on system and software architecture.

But like others before him, Lurie warned that the industry should be careful with all the hype.

“It is exciting when you think about 10 times faster speeds and lower latencies, and we’re also excited that 5G has promise to be more efficient with spectrum and about the IoT features that are being discussed, but we’ve got to be

careful,” Lurie said. “We don’t want to have too much hype because we’re not going to see these for four or five years... as an industry we don’t want to overpromise and under deliver.”

Lurie acknowledged that there may be some deployments of 5G-labeled technology before the anticipated release of 3GPP’s 5G standards in 2018, but said fully fledged commercial 5G networks won’t be up and running until late 2019 or early 2020. Until then, he said, 4G LTE networks will continue to be the industry’s bread and butter.

“Pre-standard launches are really just testing, they’re us trying to understand (5G),” Lurie said. “Right now those tests are really more focused on fixed point-to-point, not mobile. There’s a lot of buzz and noise, but for now we’ve got to stay focused on the fact that our 4G LTE networks are performing very well. There’s virtually nothing you can’t do on a 4G LTE network, and that’s improving every day.”

AT&T has a lot of integration up its sleeveIt’s no secret that mobile video usage is exploding right now, and is expected to continue expanding over the next several years. But as the industry scrambles to pivot, Lurie said AT&T is already sitting pretty thanks to its recent acquisition of DirecTV.

“What drives the video business is content, and having that size and scope (that comes with DirecTV) allows us to do a lot with the content players,” Lurie said.

Lurie said AT&T has been working hard to integrate its DirecTV assets into its business and has seen tremendous results thus far in the form of those aforementioned 5 million takers of the unlimited offer.

But more than trying to bundle mobile and video, Lurie said AT&T is looking to meld the two.

“The ability to take that content on any device you want and any place you want is really critical to our customers,” Lurie said.

Earlier this year, AT&T announced it would begin offering three new DirecTV streaming services, including a mobile-only option and options targeted at millennials and single-TV homes. But Lurie said AT&T is also looking beyond just smartphones, laptops and TVs. It wants to deliver content to any device in a customer’s life, including their car, he said.

That’s part of the plan, Lurie said, for AT&T to become a one-stop shop for everything mobile in an increasingly connected world.

“When you walk into one of our stores,

what you walk into is our ability to completely mobilize your life, everything from connecting your home to digital life, to connected cars, obviously the smartphone business and now you throw in the video content,” Lurie said. “That is absolutely the value proposition we bring to our customers.”

The IoT will allow small solutions to make a big differenceSpeaking of a connected world, Lurie said AT&T has put the pedal to the metal when it comes to pursuing IoT opportunities.

According to Lurie, AT&T already has upwards of 29 million connected devices - including 9.4 million connected cars - on its network, and it’s developing solutions that will add even more to the web.

In addition to its designated Smart Cities team, Lurie said AT&T has also opened six Foundries in California, Texas, Georgia and Israel over the past five years to promote innovation related to connected homes and cars, connected healthcare, cybersecurity, software-defined networking, business and enterprise services and the IoT.

When it comes to IoT, Lurie said simple solutions can deliver a big impact.

By way of example, Lurie outlined one solution from AT&T’s IoT Foundry that offered a waste company a way to track both the location of their garbage cans and how full they are. While it might sound simple, Lurie said the solution allows the company to plan its routes more efficiently and save on gas costs.

Lurie also sketched the details of another smart cities solution that allows municipalities to monitor their aging water systems. The solution, he said, allows the city to determine whether and where leaks are occurring, as well as monitor the water quality.

Yet another solution Lurie described was a system of sensors mounted on city traffic lights that sense gunshots, alert the police and tell where the weapon was fired and what caliber it was.

Lurie said such solutions offer AT&T a way to both deliver on its financial obligations by charging a small fee for connectivity while also improving the quality of life for people across the country.

“These are very, very simple, but very important solutions,” Lurie said. “Our job at the company is to raise shareholder value, but at the same time we have the ability to focus on things that will make people’s lives better. There’s a ton of opportunity here for us to do a lot of good.” l

Glued to the Screen

You know your phone is important to you, but have you ever stopped to think just how much time you spend each day staring at it’s screen?

According to Nielsen’s Total Audience Report for the first quarter 2016, adults in the United States spend a whopping 10 hours and 39 minutes each day consuming various media across their devices, including TVs, PCs, game consoles AM/FM radios, smartphones and tablets. And smartphones make up no small part of this time.

While TV (4 hours, 31 minutes) and radio (1 hour 52 minutes) still dominate, media consumption on smartphones has moved into third place, with the average U.S. adult spending one hour and 39 minutes each day surfing apps or the web on their handset. That figure was up 60 percent, or 37 minutes, from the average in the first quarter 2015 and 52 minutes higher than 2014’s average of 47 minutes. U.S. device users also spent an average of 31 minutes per day on their tablet in the first quarter 2016, the study found.

The figures mark a significant change from just two years ago, when people spent slightly more time on their desktop computer (49 minutes) than their smartphone (47 minutes). Now, U.S. consumers spend just 58 minutes on their desktop each day compared to nearly an hour and forty minutes on their smartphone.

A significant portion of weekly smartphone usage - a total of 11 hours and 36 minutes - was spent surfing apps or the web in 2016, up from an average of just 7 hours and 20 minutes per week last year. But another driver of smartphone screen time comes from increased mobile video consumption.

According to a March report from The NPD Group, around 81 percent of all U.S. smartphone users now stream video on their devices.

In Nielsen’s study, smartphones came in third place overall for number of adult users per month, ranking just behind AM/FM radio and live or time-shifted TV with 191 million users. Nielsen said 170 million of that monthly figure used apps or the web on

their smartphone each month, while 128 million used video on their smartphone. Tablets were in sixth place overall with 106 million adult users per month.

Nielsen figures show video consumption nearly doubled in the first quarter 2016, jumping from an average of 14 minutes per week in 2015 to 23 minutes per week this year. Among smartphone users, the 18-24 age group watched the most video by far, clocking 54 minutes of viewing time per week. The 25 to 34 age group came in second for time spent watching mobile video, with 31 minutes per week.

And mobile video figures will only continue to grow.In its Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast Update earlier this year,

Cisco said mobile video already accounted for 55 percent of total mobile data traffic in 2015 and noted that figure is expected to grow to 75 percent of all mobile data traffic by 2020. l

CTIA to Name 10th Annual Emerging Technology Award Winners Tomorrow

CTIA is gearing up to announce the winners of the 10th annual Emerging Technology Awards tomorrow in a live

ceremony. And you won’t want to miss it.The big reveal will take place at 2 p.m.

Thursday at the Connected Life and StartUp Stage on the show floor.

CTIA said entries, which were due at the end of June, were judged by a panel of 35 experts, media and analysts. Submissions were judged based on four criteria, including

innovation, functionality, technological importance and implementation.

Tomorrow’s ceremony will honor first, second and third place entries in each category. The Crowd Favorite crown will also be awarded at the ceremony, CTIA said.

Regardless of placement, CTIA said all entrants will have the opportunity to feature their products in the awards showcase.

U.S. IoT Investments to Hit $232 Billion This Year

T he Internet of Things (IoT) is drawing the big bucks this year, especially

stateside.U.S. companies are expected

to shell out more than $232 billion this year on IoT hardware, software, services and connectivity, according to a June report from International Data Corporation (IDC).

Through 2019, IDC said IoT revenues will also climb at a compound annual growth rate of 16.1 percent to reach more than $357 billion.

IDC said the manufacturing and Transportation industries are expected to lead the way in terms of investments, with forecast spending of $35.5 billion and $24.9 billion, respectively. Cross-Industry investments representing common use cases for multiple industries will also make up a substantial piece of the pie, approaching $31 billion this year, IDC said.

Other industries will also see their spending levels on IoT increase, IDC said. According to the forecast, the Insurance, Retail and Healthcare industries are expected to boost spending by 135 percent, 101

percent and 96 percent, respectively, through 2019.

IDC said the highest levels of investment are expected to be poured into three main use cases, including manufacturing operations, freight monitoring and smart buildings.

In particular, manufacturing operations spending will focus on tools to enable different components to autonomously exchange information and trigger actions

independently. Freight monitoring will seek more to carry out the intelligent recognition, location, tracking and monitoring of freight and cargo through exchanging information and real-time communications via wireless, satellite or other channels, IDC said.

For smart buildings, IDC said the key concept in investments will be optimization, or the deployment of integrated control systems capable of adapting in real time to both internal policies and external signals to use energy in the most efficient and cost-effective way.

“The long term opportunity for IoT vendors is helping to identify and create immediate and residual benefits for end users through their technologies,” said Marcus Torchia, IoT research manager for

IDC’s Customer Insights and Analysis team. “We see strong opportunities across many industries. For example, in highly instrumented verticals like manufacturing and transportation, large data sets are used to optimize operational processes and extend the life of high capital cost assets. In other sectors like healthcare and consumer, IoT technology is being used to produce benefits that improve quality of life.” l

Use of connected car technology in fleet management and traffic and parking management are also expected to rise. CalAmp said fleets in particular are adopting its smart crash report devices so that they can monitor individual vehicles. The traffic management system market overall is anticipated to increase from $4.12 billion in 2015 to $17.64 billion by 2020, according to MarketsandMarkets.

With connectivity required for these new capabilities, however, comes the risk of hacking.

According to a report from Frost & Sullivan, almost every automotive OEM in the United States has a connected telematics service - often the first point of attack for hackers. There are over 50 vulnerable attack points in the modern automotive engine control unit (ECU)-driven car, and that number is only increasing.

“It’s an expensive, damaging business and data is at the core of it,” said Peter Byrne, President of Business Development and Insurance Telematics from CalAmp.

CalAmp’s crash alert system uses the car’s own data to quickly sent information about a crash to an insurer, but it’s also secured against that data going anywhere else. According to Byrne, the company has put proprietary security measures in place to prevent a breach, but has also designed its system so the device does not communicate directly with the car’s internal bus - the connection between the different parts of the computer.

Who Is Responsible for Connected Vehicle Security?According to a Kelly Blue Book survey on vehicle hacking vulnerabilities, nearly a third of consumers believe connected car hacking will be a “serious” problem in the future, while another 41 percent said it would be a “moderate” issue.

Among those polled, 48 percent of

consumers were willing to pay for a subscription to an anti-hacking software provider. Approximately 56 percent said they were willing to pay for an insurance policy to cover any losses caused by vehicle hacking. But most consumers – 56 percent and 50 percent, respectively – believe that the vehicle manufacturer should be the one to provide anti-hacking software and insurance to cover hacking losses.

Additionally, 29 percent of consumers polled believe the vehicle manufacturer is responsible if a phone is hacked through a mobile phone or software apps.

Protecting the Connected CarWhile hacking for hacking’s sake is certainly possible, access to a connected vehicle offers similar opportunities to cyber thieves as many other types of hacking. In addition to disabling a vehicle or its features, connected car hacking can also lend itself to identity theft or financial theft through access to bank accounts and other connected services.

Within the car itself, connected services also provide the user’s location and direction of travel. Remote hacking from long range could snoop out copyrighted materials, valuable IP,

and licenses and agreements. AT&T said it takes a “layered approach”

to protect its enterprise Internet of Things (IoT) connections. The carrier said its security measures address risks on several different planes, including the device layer, the connectivity layer, the data/application layer and the threat-analysis layer.

Like AT&T, OEMs can create virtual layers in order to secure different parts of the car away from one another. These can include firewalls, a secure or hardened operating system, and digital certificates for apps.

Other companies are also taking steps to address risks. Tesla - which is well-known for its autonomous vehicle technology - and Fiat Chrysler are both offering cash rewards to outsiders who find vulnerabilities in their connected cars. And in the United States, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration expanded its research and testing capabilities to cover connected car cybersecurity.

But as companies become smarter about connecting cars, hackers will become more proficient at infiltrating them. Whether or not the automakers and connectivity providers can keep up has yet to be seen. l

At the same time, we need to recognize the additional creepiness of someone with video recording capability in a public bathroom. However, I am a strong believer that we will overcome the creepiness through a combination of personal etiquette (yes, I still believe in it) to a significant endeavor to make, for example bathrooms, non-recordable areas through beacons.

The positive argument for AR is so overwhelming that it’s a miracle we needed Pokemon Go to raise awareness again. Augmented reality is a little bit (at least for people not growing up with one) like owning a cell phone. When you never had one, you ask yourself what the fuss is all about. Once you

had it for a short while you wonder how you ever lived without it. The key is the hardware form factor: HUD display in a car? Awesome. Glasses (hopefully less intrusive)? Awesome. Holding your phone up like an aiming device? Not so awesome. But companies like Google, Facebook through Oculus, HTC, Samsung and Le Eco that have already made strides in VR are well positioned for AR success. Apple could also enter the space using the same thought-process that lead them to make the Apple Watch.

The shift to five screens will expand and disrupt the traditional business model of advertising companies, consumer media/communications equipment, and content and network providers. Integrated content delivery

companies of all sizes have an opportunity to participate in shaping this expanded but more integrated world. The emergence of the five-screen world is a rebuke of the viewpoint that innovation has left the network provider universe. The market trend for engaging consumers in more broadband is unmistakably focused on pushing content to and from five screens. Companies that successfully serve all five screens across the consumer universe will see their businesses expand and revenues rise. l

Things. The key has been our industry working together with a common set of objectives, and it’s critical we continue that effort. We saw mobile data growth more than double in 2015 with more connections, more devices and more applications. Moving forward, we still have a lot of work to do to keep up with our exponentially increasing mobile data use, and we will also need the government’s privacy, broadband, and cybersecurity policies to facilitate our continued investment and innovation to serve consumers.WW: CTIA was among the petitioners who opposed the FCC’s net neutrality rules. What were your thoughts when the decision to uphold the rules – and the FCC’s Title II designation of carriers – came down in June? Why is this issue so important for the industry?Attwell Baker: The wireless industry has always supported an open Internet – and always will. America’s mobile leadership depends on the innovation and investment of CTIA’s members. And when the wireless industry invests and innovates, consumers win. That’s why the FCC’s Title II regulatory framework is bad for industry and bad for consumers. So we’re pursuing our legal options while encouraging Congress to set sustainable rules of the road that promote an open Internet and provide regulatory certainty for billions in new broadband investment. Ultimately, I am hopeful a bipartisan consensus comes together on the Hill. In my mind, the key to any successful approach will be a clear recognition of the competitive, technical, and operational differences facing mobile providers.WW: The FCC’s incentive auction is steadily plugging along. Once the proceedings wrap up, what do you see for carriers moving forward? How long do you think it will take to get the new spectrum online and what sort of impact do you think the fresh injection of spectrum will have for carrier networks and consumers?Attwell Baker: Let’s set the stage first. The incentive auction is a great opportunity for both broadcasters and the wireless industry. We’ve got a track record of bringing billions of dollars to every major spectrum auction, and I’m confident this time will be no different. This is the first two-sided spectrum auction in the world, and the Obama Administration deserves real credit for moving forward on this new tool to bring more spectrum to mobile consumers.

Moving forward, what we all want is

an orderly and timely transition of the broadcast band once the auction ends. It takes a long time to get spectrum into the hands of mobile consumers. That’s why we’re working hard on clearing the AWS-3 spectrum auctioned in 2014 and will be partnering with broadcasters to shrink the time to market when the incentive auction ends.

Our starting point is that broadcasters have over three years to transition to their new channels. That’s a long time to ask companies that invested billions in spectrum to wait to roll it out to consumers. I feel strongly that partnering with broadcasters to address the repacking challenges they face is the best path forward, particularly for their viewers and our consumers. And we are very excited about how mobile consumers will benefit from the 600 MHz band. So much of the innovation and LTE success we are having today can be traced back to the spectrum auctions in 2006 and 2008, and we will look back at the incentive auction spectrum in the same way – helping us unlock our connected life and IoT ambitions.

Because it takes years to get spectrum in the hands of consumers, we’re also focused on what’s next after the 600 MHz auction. The FCC’s release of 11 GHz of high-band spectrum is key, and we are working closely with our government partners to get that spectrum auctioned. And we’re already working to help identify more spectrum – low-band, mid-band, and high-band – for future mobile usage.WW: We’re finally starting to come up on 5G. The standards won’t be released for another two years but tests are underway by all four of the major carriers. What kinds of network investments and carrier moves can we expect to see in the run up to 5G?Attwell Baker: I’ve seen first-hand some of the 5G trials that CTIA members are running so I know our industry is very engaged in making this future a reality. Having invested $177 billion since 2010, we’ve got a really strong track record on the investment front. That’s important because the impact of 5G and the Internet of Things is tremendous – with the

potential to add $2.7 trillion to our economy over the next 15 years.

While we’re still a few years away from widespread commercial deployment, the significant 5G advancements over the past year just underscores how fast this industry moves and why it’s such an exciting time to be a part of it. We are out in the field right now testing, and you will be benefiting from these new services faster than you probably think.

We are such a competitive industry – from operators to network providers – and that competition drives so much of what we do. 5G will be no exception.

One of the keys for 5G deployment is getting spectrum in the hands of operators and streamlining siting rules and requirements to roll out denser 5G networks in a timely and cost-efficient manner. That’s our focus at CTIA as our member companies prepare for commercial deployment. WW: We’ve been hearing a lot about how 5G will enable new and expanded use cases for consumers and enterprise. What are some of the possibilities you’re most excited about?Attwell Baker: 5G will be a real game-changer. We will see wireless networks that are five times as responsive and ten times as fast while connecting 100 times the number of devices. For me, it is the boundless opportunities for innovation in every industry that stands out.

For consumers, the first thing they will appreciate is the speed. We will see gigabit wireless speeds, which is still pretty hard to imagine. This unlocks so many ultra HD video and other video-intensive applications and services.

The one development that I’m probably most intrigued by is the reduced latency rates for 5G that will unlock real-time applications and remote operations that simply aren’t possible on today’s networks. Whether that’s telehealth surgeries from across the globe, Smart City applications, or all the connected car and fleet management options we hear about, I think we will see a remarkable amount of innovation thanks to reduced latency.

And I have to mention the Internet of Things, particularly the industrial IoT where we will see mobility and wireless improve our economic productivity and improve our lives. 5G will be able to support the millions – which will soon be billions – of sensors and beacons that will connect nearly everything, from our

roadways and city street lights to farmers’ crops and our electric grid.WW: With 2016 almost behind you, what are CTIA’s top priorities going into 2017? What’s your vision for the future of the telecom industry?Attwell Baker: I don’t mean to sound like a broken record, but the top priority for us is always spectrum. It’s what makes everything wireless possible. As long as America’s wireless industry has spectrum, we’ll remain the world’s mobile leader by innovating to create and offer consumers the best wireless products and services. That will enable innovation in virtually every part of the economy from agriculture and healthcare to financial services and energy.

Hand-in-hand with spectrum, we need a commitment from every level of government to streamline the siting rules for our new 5G networks with rules and rates that make sense

for smaller cell environments. We all need to spend more time educating policymakers on how siting and rights of way rules and rates really impact where and how quickly 5G will be deployed.

My vision for the wireless industry? The amazing thing to me is that we are still just scratching the surface on what mobility and the wireless platform will ultimately become. We are entering a period of boundless innovation – applications and services we can’t even imagine today. If we can partner successfully with policymakers, wireless will be our future – powering the devices and technology that create better communities, generate economic growth, and improve the quality of life for everyone. WW: News broke this summer that GSMA and CTIA are introducing a new joint event in 2017, Mobile World Congress Americas. What was the rationale behind the deal and what can we expect for the first Mobile World Congress Americas?

Attwell Baker: This is a big deal for the wireless industry. We’re really looking forward to combining the show resources of the two premier wireless organizations—CTIA and the GSMA—to create the first truly global wireless event in the United States. Mobile World Congress Americas will be in San Francisco next year, and will feature the leading wireless experts and innovators as well as all the latest mobile products and services.

The CTIA/GSMA joint partnership will help deliver the global showcase we want to feature all of the cutting edge innovation in the United States and the entire Americas. Mobile World Congress Americas will continue to serve CTIA Super Mobility attendees, exhibitors and sponsors while also engaging and attracting new audiences from across the mobile ecosystem. CTIA will continue to develop unique, policy-focused educational sessions while GSMA will be on point for the event’s production and management. l

than the others, particularly on the uplink. Data tests showed that Verizon’s LTE network delivered the fastest download throughput of 35 Mbps, coupled with an average upload throughput of 15 Mbps. AT&T pushed data to the test devices at a download speed of 21 Mbps with 10 Mbps upload speeds. Both T-Mobile and Sprint delivered download speeds between 9 to 14 Mbps. Both AT&T and Verizon improved their throughputs since last year, but T-Mobile and Sprint lagged last year’s pre-show results. Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T all provided average latencies of around 62 msec.
