In North Carolina, there are currently over 17,000 open computing jobs, but only 18% of schools teach AP Computer Science. Computer science opens more doors for students than any other discipline in todays world. Learning even the basics will help students in virtually any career— from architecture to zoology. Just as we teach students how to dissect a frog or how electricity works, its important for every 21st-century student to have a chance to design an app or an al- gorithm or learn how the Internet works. EHS Carpentry making the news!! Thursday, March 1 during second period, representatives from the Mebane Enterprise (Bailey Pennington—EHS graduate), Times News, Alamance County Bar Association, and Fox 8 news came to interview and witness the process of building Buddy Benches. Mr. Stewart and Caleb Barbee were both interviewed by the Mebane Enterprise, whereas I was interviewed by Cindy Farmer on Fox 8. They asked us questions about the benches, and what it was like getting the opportunity to help out the community by creating these benches. We showed them how we operate the new equipment, and we let them get hands on and let them help us put together the benches. In North Carolina, there are currently over 17,000 open computing jobs, but only 18% of schools teach AP Computer Science. Computer science opens more doors for students than any other discipline in today’s world. Learning even the basics will help students in virtually any career—from architecture to zoology. Just as we teach students how to dissect a frog or how electricity works, it’s important for every 21st-century student to have a chance to design an app or an al-

gorithm or learn how the Internet works.

“Getting it done” in CTE and Adapted Curriculum classes!

Tuesday, Feb. 27th students from the Multimedia Webpage Design CTE class, taught by Mr. Anderson, partnered with the Adapted Curriculum students, taught by Ms. Noell, to assist in making posters for Autism Awareness Month. Using the computers, students worked together to locate and choose appropriate pictures to create eye-appealing visuals.

Here’s what a couple of students had to say about the experience: “Last Tuesday I helped the adapted curriculum students make posters for Autism Awareness Month. I

helped them choose what pictures to go with the quote they chose to work on. It was a wonderful experience to help them make their posters and get to know them.” Heidi Strausser—10th grade CTE student

“Tuesday the 27th the adapted curriculum students came to our classroom and we worked together to create flyers that will be used to bring awareness to some of the facts about autism. The students were very enjoyable to be around and to work with. It seemed that they all enjoyed time working with other students and being able to help.” Tucker Campbell—12th grade CTE student

Reality of Money Fair

On this field trip we went to the Mebane Rec Center to learn about how to budget our money,

and how bad credit can impact your life. We were all given different portfolios that described

our situation in life such as what job we had, what type of education, and our marital status. We then went to different stations they had set

up around the complex, these stations were meant to represent real life expenses you will encounter and depending on your credit, your

choices were limited to less desirable options. We could even encounter unexpected, unplanned

for, expenses such as bounced checks. This activity actually taught me a lot, such as how important having a good credit

score is, and how quickly expenses can pop up on you if you plan poorly and have bad credit. I think that this activity taught all the students a

very valuable lesson about making sure to budget their money, and that keeping your credit score in check is extremely important to having

a successful life.
