He also stressed that traditi onal wisdom available with us has a lot of soluti ons to the problems faced in the modern era. During the period under report, the most important event was the successful conduct of the 16th Annual Group Meeti ng of AICRP on Tuber Crops at BCKV, Kalyani, West Bengal during 24-26 May 2016. Among the dignitaries who parti cipated in the group meeti ng were Dr N.K. Krishna Kumar, DDG (Horticulture Sciences) and Prof. Manas Mohan Adhikary, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of BCKV besides Dr. S. Edison, former Director of ICAR-CTCRI and Dr. C. S. Ravindran former Head, Crop Production, ICAR-CTCRI. In this group meeting, two CMD resistant cassava hybrids, Sree Raksha 1 and Sree Raksha 2, were recommended for release. Several producti on and protecti on technologies related to tuber crops that were tested across the country were also recommended for release. Another notable functi on conducted at the Insti tute during period was, the 6th HH Vishakam Thirunal Endowment Lecture which was given by Shri. K. Jayakumar IAS, Vice Chancellor, Thunchathezhuthachan Malayalam University. “National Technology Day” was celebrated on 11 May, 2016. Sri. Ashok Kumar Thekkan, Director of Agriculture, Govt. of Kerala was the chief guest. Theme of the event was “Creati ve strategies for generati ng innovati ve agriculture technologies”. A remarkable achievement on the research front is the development of an Electronic Crop (E-Crop) which in fact is an electronic robot that communicates with the farmer regarding the requirement of the crop, viz. water, nutrients etc. by means of SMS. It is expected that this gadget would come in handy for those farmers interested in precision farming. Further, it is expected to provide very accurate forecasts and advisories that would assist the farmer immensely. Yet another signifi cant research achievement is the technology developed to convert thippi, a starch factory waste and an environment pollutant as nutrient rich organic manure. An interesti ng product is the graft ed cassava starch coated urea which has the potenti al to be an ideal slow release medium that would enhance ferti lizer effi ciency, reduce cost of culti vati on and increase crop producti vity. CMD Resistant Hybrids of Cassava Recommended for Release from AICRP-TC

National Technology Day Celebrated at ICAR-CTCRI

This is a high yielder (40 t ha-1) having high starch content (28-30%). Cooking quality of the tuber is very good if harvested at 6-7 months. The stem colour is blackish brown with dark red petiole. The tubers are long and cylindrical having brown colour, with cream rind and white flesh. Number of tubers per plant ranges from 9-12 and average per plant yield is around 8 kg. CR-43-7 on the other hand has red coloured stem with narrow leaves. This is also a high yielder having high starch (25-30%). This is purely an industrial variety recommended for State release for the coastal belts of Andhra Pradesh. Number of tubers per plant ranges from 9-12 and average per plant yield is around 9 kg.These hybrids were developed through introgression of CMD resistant gene from material received from CIAT via a collaborative programme, into local lines.

Thekkan added that the Kerala state is producing several high value crops such as pine apple, pepper, jack fruit, banana, but there is a dearth of viable agro-industries to process them into value added products. He stressed that agricultural students and rural youth should come forward to create new startups on novel agricultural products to meet emerging consumer needs. Dr James George, Director, ICAR – CTCRI indicated that the software and electronics industry in Kerala is progressing with creative and useful technologies developed by youth, but the agriculture industry is lagging far behind in technological advancement. The 16th Annual Group Meeting of the All India Coordinated Research Project on Tuber Crops (AICRPTC) was held at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyala, Kalyani, West Bengal during 24-26 May 2016. The inaugural function started with the ICAR theme song at 11 AM on 24 May 2016. Dr. Asit Maiti, Director of Research, BCKV welcomed the delegates and participants to 16th Annual Group Meeting including Dr. Edison, Former Director, ICAR-CTCRI and Dr. C. S. Ravindran, Former Head, Crop Production, ICAR-CTCRI, who were the invited experts. Dr. N. K. Krishna Kumar, Hon'ble DDG (Hort.) ICAR, delivered the inaugural address, presided over by Prof. Manas Mohan Adhikary, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, BCKV.

He emphasised that a lot of wealth and strength are available in tuber crops and are the food security as well as fuel crops of future. He requested cooperation from all centres to provide information for digitalisation of data of crops. All the modern tools are to be used for collection and interpretation and transfer of data. The Vice chancellor gave the presidential address. A couple of publications prepared by different centres, mostly in regional languages were released during the occasion. The Best Centre Award during 2015-16 was presented to Dapoli centre of Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth, Maharashtra by Dr. N. K. Krishna Kumar, Hon’ble DDG (Hort.), during the inaugural session and was received by Dr. Mhaskar of BSKKV, Dapoli. Dr. James George, Project Coordinator made presentation of salient achievements of AICRPTC centres and ongoing programmes. Dr. Jayantha Tarafdar proposed vote of thanks.

About 75 participants including delegates, Chairmen, Invited experts, Directors, Heads of the departments, Professors, Project Coordinator (Potato), Deans, Representative from CIP, Research Scientists and Research Scholars of BCKV participated in various technical sessions.

Electronic Crop (E-Crop): A device which communicates for crops

faculties of science like ICT, space science etc, precision farming technologies are being perfected so that maximum benefits can be reaped from minimum inputs. To know the status of crops in each field and to give plot specific management strategies, high resolution remote sensing pictures are already in use. Forecasts made in this way are prone to error because the key factors like crop physiology are not considered while making such forecasts. By pooling such data regional and national level crop forecasting are being done in many countries. To support the precision farming strategies, ICAR-CTCRI has developed an electronic crop simulator, which communicates to the farmers directly from the field on behalf of the crop and inform him about its status, requirements and what will happen to the crop in future etc. Scheduling of irrigation, application of nutrients in right time and quantities to achieve targeted yield and many other crop husbandry operations can be automated precisely by this device. This device is named Electronic Crop or E-Crop in short. This is an advanced system which simulates crop growth real-time, generates agro advisory and send it to the farmer. Forecasts and advisories by E-Crop is more accurate and reliable than that generated based on remote sensing pictures taken by satellites.1. Description of the DeviceThis is a weather proof electronic device which works in the field. A device to communicate for sweet potato is developed by ICAR-CTCRI. This can be easily extended to other crops also. Different sensors are connected to this control unit and they are positioned on the exterior of the box. Control unit of the device is fixed inside the box. The major components of the control unit are:1.1 MotherboardSensors are connected to the motherboard for interpreting and processing their readings. The PIC is connected to RPI via UART protocol. The RPI requests the motherboard for the readings. The motherboard responds with the current reading from the sensors. Signal conditioning circuits are implemented in the motherboards.1.2 Raspberry Pi (RPI)RPI module is the CPU of the whole system. Clock, web connection and data collection are done by this module. This module is the brain of the system.1.3 Router and 3G Modem3G router and modem are used to establish internet connection. For collecting weather data real-time at 15 minutes interval, sensors are positioned on the exterior of the box and are interfaced to the motherboard using RJ-11 jacks. Data collected by these sensors are sent to the control unit and this data will be sent to the cloud. Sensors to collect data on temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation, wind velocity, wind direction, rainfall and soil moisture are used in the device.Other components of the device are:1.4 Router and 3G Modem3G router and modem are used to establish internet connection.1.5 Standalone software E-Crop SchedulerThis software helps to download weather data collected by the device to the local machine automatically.

the workshop, in his address indicated that the agricultural technologies should have direct positive impact on the social-economic conditions of the farmers and it is therefore necessary for the budding researchers to look for creative solutions for farm problems beyond the laboratories. He narrated the stories of how few path-breaking technologies like drip irrigation, potato chips, Pringles chips were developed by researches by critically observing natural phenomenon happened outside laboratories. Dr. S. Ramanathan, Head-Social Sciences delivered keynote address and Dr Sheela Immanuel, Principal scientist proposed vote of thanks. The workshop was organised to sensitize the research students from agriculture and related disciplines on the importance and utility of creative approaches in developing innovative agriculture technologies. Various creative approaches like brain storming, SCAMPER, attribute listing were demonstrated and students had opportunity to personally interact with eminent scientists from ICAT-CTCRI and Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Valiamala. About 40 students from various colleges in Thiruvananthapuram participated in the programme. This workshop was sponsored by The Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) as a part of its National Technology Day celebrations.

Santhosh Mithra Present day food production is not sufficient to achieve zero hunger especially in the third world countries where food demand is increasing continuously for the ever increasing population. Since the cultivable area is shrinking in this part of the world, achieving higher productivity from the available genetic stock is the only solution. With the help of computer simulation models, it is identified that the difference between achievable and achieved yield is generally wide under Indian conditions. Optimized resource application can reduce this gap. Real-time generation of the strategies to reduce this gap and its implementation is the best solution to this problem. Farmer can specify fertilizers added to the crop during different time intervals and this will be updated in the system. Default unit is (kg/ha).f. Viewing the data : To view the raw sensor data collected by E-Crop device SENSOR DATA link can be followed. Data collected at 15 minutes interval will be displayed. This can be accessed by all users.g. Viewing the data in chart form: Graphical representation of collected data in chart form can be viewed through the CHART link. It is restricted to Admin and Device owner only.h. SMS log: To display the advisory text of current date as well as the earlier dates of a specific user #SMS LOG# link can be followed. Apart from this, the system will store all the SMS related logs.i. Logout from the session: LOGOUT link clear all user sessions. After logout, system will display home page.Through the web based user interface, the specifications about the crops grown in the field and the input and management practices followed can be updated in the system.3. Working of the DeviceThis device will be installed in the field. The sensors will collect the data on different weather and soil parameters like maximum and minimum temperature, solar radiation, relative humidity, day length, precipitation, soil moisture content wind velocity and wind direction real-time. This data will be sent to internet at 15 minutes interval. The standalone software E-Crop Scheduler gets activated in the local machine at a stipulated time i.e at 7:30 PM and this scheduler downloads the day's weather parameters and the other data updated through interface to the local machine. In the local machine the corresponding crop simulation model gets executed and generates agro advisory . This advisory is sent to the mobile of the concerned farmer in the form of SMS. This is an excellent device for precision farming which collects the data real-time from the field and then generate the advisory and inform the farmer about the present and future status of the crops as well as the strategies to manage the crop to get better results. The data collected by the devices installed in different fields give a very clear realistic overall status of the crop at present and in future. This information will be useful to the policy makers and planners as well as for tackling the market risk which usually emanates from unexpected boom in production/supply, fall in prices etc. If the information about the production is known well in advance, sufficient precautions can be taken to avoid such risks4. Application of the DeviceForecasting of yield of the crop can be done more accurately at local, regional and national level. Forecasting done with the help of satellite images have limitations because the image capturing is hindered by many obstacles or due to poor resolution of images etc. Such limitations are overcome when this device is used for the same purpose. Since crop simulation models are used and since the weather and soil data are collected directly from the field, the forecasts from this device are more accurate and reliable. Such accurate advance information is helpful to the farmers in many ways

2. Installation and Management of the Device

For the entire area with same weather, one device is sufficient to send information to all the farmers of that area. A single device can give advisory on many crops. Eg. rice, wheat, sweet potato, cassava etc. Before the device is installed in the field, it should be configured properly. Configuration can be done either automatically or manually. Device is fixed safely in a raised platform in the field. The device uses solar power source and this unit is also fixed near the E-Crop device and connected to it. Once the device is installed, the scheduler should be set up in the local machine.2.1. Web interface to configure and manage the deviceA web interface is used to manage the device. The interface was developed using PHP/MySQL. 2.1.1. Steps to manage the device through the web interfacea. Adding new users: Admin and Device owner can create user Farmer, by providing mobile number and email along with other details. The system will generate the access code and send it to the email and to the mobile as SMS for verification. Admin user can view the access code and mobile number of all farmers. A Farmer can access the system at FARMER LOGIN Link from main page. Similarly Device owner is created by Admin.b. Creation of new device: This can be done through the DEVICE link of the interface. Only Admin can create new Device ID. c. Add new locations: The location in which the device is located can be added through LOCATION link. This can be done by Admin and Device owner.c. Add new crops: Through CROPS link of the interface, new crops can be created by Admin and Device owner. System will ask for the crop name, model name and crop duration. Here the model name is the physical directory name of crop model engine, crop duration is the duration of crop in days. From this page the crop variety information also can be updated. To create the crop variety ADD VARIETY Link alongside the existing crops can be used. d. Add new soil type: Admin can add soil type from SOIL TYPE

especially to formulate strategies to tackle market risks due to glut in the market, low price.

• The forecasts sent by the E-Crop devices installed in different fields to the centralized database can be pooled and a national/state/regional level crop yield/status can be obtained by just compiling that information at the desired level for different times in future.

• Device gives information to the farmer in the form of SMS about what is happening to the crop even if he is far away from field.

This device can be used for giving real-time agro advisory on any crop to reduce yield gap and to achieve targeted yield. Weather parameters of the day, the potential yield that can be achieved by the crop after its stipulated duration as per its present crop condition and the anticipated weather scenarios, N, P, K and moisture required to be applied to achieve this targeted yield etc. are part of the advisory received in the mobile phone as SMS and the farmer can follow these

Nutrient rich organic manure thippi compost from cassava starch factory solid waste (Thippi)

Slow release fertilizers synthesized using grafted cassava starch

In Tamil Nadu, about 8-10 large scale starch factories and 150-200 small scale starch industries were generating about 40-60 tonnes of fibrous solid waste (thippi) per annum creating serious environmental pollution. The chemical analysis of thippi indicated it as acidic with a very high C:N ratio (82:1) and poor in all essential plant nutrients. Vermicomposting of thippi resulted in the production of thippi compost with a C:N ratio of 8:1 and N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn content to the tune of 1.32, 3.82, 0.40, 2.18, 0.96, 1.11, 0.08%, 11.23 and 89.93 mg kg-1 respectively which is 3.5, 49, 7, 32.5, 8, 185, 100, 2.5 and 12 times than thippi. Field experiment conducted on station for two seasons to test the possibility of thippi compost as a substitute to organic manures and chemical fertilizers including

Slow release urea and NPK fertilizers with a range of release kinetics (5 to 40% release after 25 days in aqueous medium) were synthesized by coating with grafted cassava starch. The coated fertilizers showed significantly higher water absorbencies also.

During May 2016, the seven newly joined Scientists made their individual presentations on topics of their interest in their respective discipline in the Science forum. In techno-incubation centre a training on value added products from tuber crops were conducted and total 68 members participated from different parts of Kerala.Apart from this, 98 students from different parts of the country and 102 farmers from Kerala and Punjab also visited the Institute and they were imparted training/exposure on Scientific method of tuber crops cultivation.New appointmentsMr. Arun Kumar, P, Mr. A.V.V.
