something!
Looks like we are off to a strong start for the new year. We now have 62
memberships - up from 49 at the end of 2016 - and a total of 115 members, counting
spouses and significant others. Our general meeting in January was a record turn-
out of 41 people, which is pushing the seating limit of the restaurant; however, there
is always room for a few more. We are looking at other meeting alternatives, and
would welcome your suggestions.
Winners of the Giberson Award for 2017 were Kathy Fahey and Charlie Hensley.
Frank Navratil was presented with a Past President’s Award for excellent service.
Bob Bly and Peggy Cardwell were recognized for their past service as Treasurer and
Secretary, respectively. Congratulations to Bob Witt for being elected to the vice
presidency position in CTCI, and to Bob Bly for his election as a CTCI Director at
Large.
Preparations for the convention in August are firming up rapidly, and your convention committee is hard
at work on the details. We need your help, so contact Bill Long if you are able to help. As promised, many of our
near term activities will be tied into the convention, and feature activities we think will interest you regardless of
your intentions with respect to attending the convention. Of note is a tech session to help you evaluate your car
condition with improvements that you might consider for better presentation and operation. The focus would be
more on Touring Car aspects rather than authenticity. We are planning a tour of the convention facilities, cou-
pled with a downtown Knoxville tour of site activities, including riding the trolley system which should be fun for
all. We are also planning at least two great drives in the Spring featuring one of the Whiskey Trails and the Foot-
hills Parkway - both with lunch along the way. Hope you can join us!

A Event Report
On December 15th we hosted the Christmas Party for the first time, ending the
Rawe’s string at nine. Thirty-six people attended the 2017 affair.
The food was wonderful with everyone bringing a dish. The annual gift exchange
was enjoyed by all. The verdict is still out on rather we continue the practice of
having two different types of gifts, nice ones or white elephant, or just go with the
fun ones. Janice Rawe did a wonderful job with the help of Alyce Anthony of keep-
ing everyone under control while opening gifts. As you can see, the party brought
out the humor in our guests.
We also took this opportunity to draw for
the winner of the free registration fee for
one of the people who did the early regis-
tration for our upcoming convention. Turns out, the winner, who was the 47th one to pre-
register, came from the same club in Oregon where the winner in New Jersey came from.
Jim and I truly enjoyed hosting all of you.
Happy New Year!

“No Meeting” Breakfast - February 3, 2018 It was a cold Saturday morning and twenty hearty members and guests gathered at the
Airport Hilton for food, fellowship and warmth. Only two Classic Birds made it to the
breakfast. The Navratil’s car won the free breakfast. We might have had a few more in
attendance but the “Flu” bug is running rampant.
Bob Witt reminded everyone of the Dinner and Play scheduled for the following Saturday
evening.
Next Breakfast is April 7, 2018. Location is Airport Hilton. Weather should be nice by then.

The Alden R. “Gib” Giberson Award* for this past year’s efforts goes to the team
of Charlie Hensley and Kathy Fahey. You have no doubt seen them spreading
themselves around this past year, doing things like coordinating MockingBird
Run IX, the Eclipse Party and the Oak Ridge Parade. Charlie also served as a
Director at Large for the Club.

individual who is credited with naming the
Thunderbird while working on it in the 1950’s.

Dinner and Play at the Flying Anvil hosted by Sylvia Witt
Sylvia Witt arranged for about 20 SMCTC members to have dinner at the Sullivan's in Rocky Hill on the Saturday evening of Febru-
ary 10th. The group enjoyed a delightful dinner, most with stuff to take home. We then moved to the Flying Anvil Theater nearby
for a love story of a play, just in time for Valentine’s Day. The play was an excellent production of Mary’s Wedding and was emo-
tional at times. The two person cast was outstanding. The rain was torrential outside so no one was in any car that might leak.
Thus, no pictures from the parking lot and the group in the theater was not photographed either.
Copper Wire Discovered After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year outside of New York City , New York scientists found traces of copper cable dating back over 100 years. They came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 100 years ago. Not to be outdone by the New Yorkers, in the weeks that followed, a Los Angeles, California archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet somewhere just outside Oceanside. Shortly afterwards, a story appeared in the LA Times which read: "California archaeologists report a finding of 200 year old copper cable and have con-cluded that their ancestors already had an advanced, high-tech communications network a hundred years earlier than the New Yorkers." One week later, a local newspaper in Decatur, Alabama, reported the following: "After digging down about 30 feet deep in his pasture near the community of Trinity , Bubba, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely nothing. Bubba has therefore concluded that 300 years ago, Alabama had already gone wireless". Just makes a person proud to be from the South doesn't it.
You ain’t just whistling Dixie!

“My car is not a show car, so why on earth would I be
interested in going to a CTCI Convention?”
Actually there are a number of good responses to this comment!
#1 FUN, FUN, FUN! The CTCI Conventions are a lot of fun for all attendees. And, if you have not been to a CTCI Con-
vention, it might surprise you that only about one half of the Convention attendees actually have a car there. All the
people at the Convention are car people, ie. Thunderbird people, who share the love for our little classic cars with eve-
ryone else there.
#2 Thunderbird Knowledge. The Convention is filled with knowledgeable Thunderbird minds who are more than willing
to share their knowhow with any one they meet. At the International Convention, there is a “Meet the Experts” session
where any one can ask questions of the panel on any Thunderbird issue they want to discuss.
#3 Thunderbird parts and other stuff. Most of the Thunderbird suppliers are represented at each Convention and
sometimes they offer show discounts on some of their products. Generally, door prizes are presented during the
event.
#4 Driven cars are welcome on all the tours. There is also a place for driven cars in all three categories of cars in the
show. Driven cars, along with trailered cars are judged in the Concours Class. Touring Class cars have to be driven to
the show, some coming from all across the county. And Display cars are not even judged.
A word from Knoxville Convention 2018 Raffle Coordinator, Donna Navratil ….
With the New Year upon us, it is now time to really get our gears in motion for our upcoming International Convention in Au-gust. With that in mind, I am still looking for club members to commit to putting together and donating raffle baskets. With a club membership of 100, we certainly should be able to get more than 12 members participating! If for some reason you find you will be unable to attend (Oh no! You’ll miss all the fun!), this is the perfect opportunity to support your club and get in-volved! You need not spend a lot of money, just keep your eyes open for things that you think a convention goer would love to go home with. Total value of each basket should be $25 - $50. Shop after-holiday sales and discount outlets and you will spend less than the total value. Go with a theme – a yellow (or some other color) basket, Christmas, cigar aficionado, chocolate lover, kids or grandkids, tea drinker and so on. And remember, these classic T-Birds don’t have much trunk space, so stay away from large items that would be hard to haul home. Remember, gift cards need to be from national chains, as we already have 142 folks pre-registered from 30 states and 4 countries!
Contact Donna Navratil at 865-458-0935 or by email: [email protected] to say you will help BE PART OF THE FUN! BE SUPPORTIVE OF YOUR CLUB! BE A RAFFLE BASKET DONOR!

Do you Want to Help With the Convention But Don’t Know What You Could Do?
Can you drive a car (yours or some one elses)? Have a cell phone?
One of the largest needs we have for help is for day-time parking lot observers covering 2 hour shifts. The job here is just to be
stationed in one of our parking lots, drive around it occasionally and observe what’s happening. If you see something out of the
ordinary or something unusual, make a call to the names provided. At certain times, you may also pick up a Convention attendee
and take them to their hotel. That’s it!
If you think you could help with this, even if you are not going to register for the convention, please contact Rick Rawe.
