    1.3

    Key Module Concepts:

The three components of human communication

    Voice intonation and body language

Clues to explain if an individual is lying

    Types of lying

    Reasons for lying

    Methods of active listening

The effects of cultural diversity on communication

    and detecting deception

    MODULE 1

    Human Communication Basics

    Introduction

Human communication is just the words that people say to each other,

right? Not exactly. Human communication is the way in which humans

exchange meaningful ideas with one another. Depending upon the

study involved (percentages vary slightly), research states that only

about 10% of communication involves the actual words people say,

but 30% of communication is the way in which people say those words,

called voice intonation. All the rest of our communication, about 60%,

    is done nonverbally .

    This module discusses

    the complexities of

    human communication.

    It looks at perceptions,

    words, and overall

    communication not just

    the spoken words that

    people say. Youll learn

    just what is meant by

    voice intonation. Youll

    see how people lie and

some of the reasons that they lie. In addition, you will examine non-

verbal communication, also called body language, and learn how to

interpret nonverbal clues (also called cues). Nonverbal communication

is extremely important in thecriminaljustice system because its the

way that ofcers determine whether or not persons they are questioning

are being honest with them, whether t hey are hiding something, and

whether or not they are actually lying. This skill is vital to anyone

working in the criminal justice world.

Listening is also an important component in communication. A crimi-

nal justice professional must be a good listener and an active listener,

as well as a very observant listener. Your listening skills will help you

ask better questions of your witnesses to get more information about
