The people belong to over a dozen different cultures and speak more than 14 languages. As a
result of its unique location and historical links with the Central Asia and Europe, the materialand non-material culture of Chitral bears traces of Greeks, Iranians, Mongolian, Tatar and Turk
influences. It remained an independent state for centuries with its own culture and language. In
the late nineteenth century it became part of British India.and after the independence from
British rule Chitral joined Pakistan.Chitral faces terrible weather conditions. Before 2006 the whole valley used to be cut off from
rest parts of the country due to closure of Lawari pass. After that the then president of PakistanGeneral Pervaiz Musharaf inaugurated the Lawari tunnel which brought new wave of life among
the Chitral community. From then onwards there has been a remarkable increase in the economy
of Chitral district. Due to its distant location from the larger cities of the country, Chitral wasgrowing at snail pace but now it has picked up some momentum. Majority of the Chitrali
community is poor hence cannot afford education. Looking at these problems the CSWO was
brought into existence by some of the elite educationists of Chitral. In these few years the growth
of Chitral in every field particularly in education has been marvelous, because Chitralis are peaceloving and education loving people.
Chitral Students Welfare Organization (CSWO)
