One needs an absolutely capable partner for such a difficult innovation

project with global ramifications. Fujitsu Siemens Computers has enriched

the collaboration with their expertise and first-class products.

Kenneth Lindstroem, Head of Siemens CIO AP, Siemens AG

The object of the Siemens Enterprise Portal global project was to set up a portal framework for the

Siemens AG. The company wanted to present one look and feel with a centralized coordination of

internal and external web contents on a unified platform for employees, customers, suppliers and share

holders. In addition to SAP, Siemens Business Services and Siemens Units Fujitsu Siemens Computers

also provided important components for the overall success. PRIMEPOWER and PRIMERGY servers are

the building blocks of the optimized portal infrastructure.

    Some facts about the customer

The Siemens AG is one of the largest companies in the

areas of electronics and electrical technology in the

world, and is active in the fields of energy, industry,

    information and communication, medicine, traffic,

manufactured construction elements and lighting. The

products and services include household appliances,

electricity transport and installation of communications

networks, and the development of semi-conductors. The

Siemens AG has more than 430,000 employees in over

190 countries. The palette of products includes 50,000

product families and about 1 million products. About

80 percent of them were developed in the last five years.

More that 50,000 Siemens employees are involved

world-wide in research and development and according

to company records, the annual R&D budget exceeds

5 billion Euros. The basic ideas that characterize the

company are the commitment to help people, protect

the environment and to ensure the responsible use of

    resources.

The subject of portals and Siemens

In 2002 there were 102 Siemens portals world-wide.

On the basis of that number, a business case study

was made which compared the investment costs for a

portal framework with the intended cost savings. As

a result, the Siemens Enterprise Portal was created.

    Reducing compounded structures

This is the format of an internationally active company:

Siemens AG branches and subsidiaries are located in

all regions of the world, with great numbers of fields

of business, whose activities, programs and services,

whose internal and external web landscapes arejuxtaposed to each other in a disunited whole. The

heterogeneity is expressed by the coexistence of different

    IT standards, applications, station identifications,

passwords and user surfaces. All of that represents

a considerable ballooning of costs with multiple

expenditures for hardware, software and training. That

means that the contact with the business processes

of customers and partners can only be maintained at

great financial expense. Another parallel symptom

is the distorted image of the overall Siemens portfolio

conveyed to external users. The Siemens CorporateInformation Office (CIO) investigated these compound

structures, made calculations, demonstrated the synergy

potential, and developed a solution concept and initiated

realization in a three-phase plan. A partner pool

to which Fujitsu Siemens Computers also belonged

    supported them.

    For a unified total picture

The SAP Enterprise Portal 6.20 provides the Siemens

AG web landscape with a new, strong framework. It

combines all kinds of company data and applications,

    transforms unstructured information into knowledge,

and allows for collaboration that extends beyond the

company. Employees, customers, suppliers and partners

have a coherent and unified view of the company with

a user-friendly surface. With such offers as Human

Resources processes, Service Planning View for Planning

of Power Plant Maintenance (PG), Project Management

(PTD), Intranet Consolidation (A&D) and Collaboration

(SV), the software sorts out portal contents precisely

according to the role and tasks of the user.

With more technology in the background

The portal framework is run from the Siemens Business

Services data center. In the server park rented by the

customer is a powerful UNIX platform with entry level

and mid-range PRIMEPOWER servers with eXtended

Architecture. The Intel based PRIMERGY technologyprovides a broad base of support. These components,

arranged in rack and tower configuration, ensure a

continuous platform operation and thereby a high level

of application reliability in the smallest possible space.
