Cromwell and Floodwood students in grades 10-12 had the recent opportunity to
tour the University of Minnesota-Duluth. This
tour gave older students a last look at a place
they were planning on or had already applied
to and gave our younger students a first time
look at the campus. Before enjoying lunch in
the Dining Center, students took the time to
explore the library (with echo's), the
bookstore, rec sports and a dorm room.
UMD is also home to some of Talent Search’s 12th
grade PSEO students as well as roughly 40 former students ranging from college
freshmen to seniors.

Faces In The Crowd
Red Wagon Award
Ben Evavold, an eighth grade Talent Search student at Lincoln Park Middle School in
Duluth, received a very prestigious award in June of 2012!
Ben joined the Americorps Program at
Lincoln Park because he was struggling with
some classes - mostly math. One of the ac-
tivities that he became very involved with was
“Green Sneaker” project. The Green Sneaker
project collects shoes and sends them off to
another country where they are fixed and do-
nated to kids who don’t have shoes. Ben
played a big leadership role in the group. He
designed posters, collected shoes, counted
donations daily, and kept a current tally of
their goal. Over 100 pairs of shoes were col-
lected!
In June of 2012, Lieutenant Governor Evonne Prettner Solon, came to Duluth and pre-
sented the Red Wagon Award to the eight Americorps students involved in this wonderful
project. Congratulations Ben!!
Our students do some pretty great things that need to be shared! If you know of some-
thing cool to share about your son/daughter, classmate, or yourself, let us know! Email

Lincoln Park Middle School
This past fall, middle school students in Duluth
went from being Morgan Park Wildcats to Lin-
coln Park Wildcats. A newly constructed school
was opened for 6th - 8th grade students to
begin the school year
in. Talent Search staff
took some time ask-
ing our students and
staff what their favor-
ite part of the new
building was now that they are getting settled.

the cafeteria and common space .

January is almost here, and that means it's time for seniors, with the help of parents, to seriously consider applying for college financial aid for the upcoming school year. In addition to private scholarships, federal financial aid is available for students attend-ing two-year or four-year, public or private, career or trade colleges and schools. The aid is intended to cover expenses such as tuition, room and board, books, other sup-plies and transportation. Most students receive the aid based on the level of their fi-nancial need. Students can receive federal financial aid in the form of grants, loans or work-study. Grants are financial awards that do not have to be repaid. Examples include Pell Grants and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants. Loans, of course, must be repaid after you complete your schooling. The best loans are typically those that are subsidized by the federal or state government, as they generally carry lower interest rates. Work-study provides financial help through jobs, usually on campus, so students can help pay for education expenses. Ask your Talent Search Advisor if you have ques-tions.
