Solictors Shinal Badiani and Sarah Cave from our London office abseiled from ArcelorMittal Orbit, the UK’s tallest sculpture. Their bravery allowed them to see London from 262 feet above the city and they raised over £700 for St. Mungos.

By hosting their first ever clay shoot, Taunton office ‘pulled’ in £3,800 in aid of Pancreatic Cancer UK and SAVES. The format of the shoot offered 10 teams of four guns the chance to shoot eight stands of 10 birds, plus an 80-bird flush. The day featured a guest appearance by former English Open Sporting champion Chris Childerhouse who is well known for being an extremely quick shot. Chris gave up his day to compete on a stand against each team for a donation of £10 per gun.

Our Southampton office held it’s fifth Ladies Lock In networking and fundraising event. Local independent businesses were given a stall free of charge at the Christmas market style evening in return for donating a raffle prize. Guests included clients and referrers from HSBC, James Cowper Kreston, Quantuma, Interbay and Lloyds attended the event, raising over £550 for the office charity.

Our Monopoly Challenge saw our lawyers and their clients’ complete fun challenges around Bristol, the first of which was to upcycle cardboard boxes into team masks. The evening was rounded off by dinner, drinks and a raffle and we raised over £3,500 for Unseen.

Employees, clients and friends of Clarke Willmott raised over £6,000 for St Ann’s Hospice by taking a virtual round trip on static bikes and travelled to all seven of our offices - Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Taunton, Southampton and London – a mere 1065kms in one day!

ITV presenter Gethin Jones came to our Manchester office to cheer on our in-house riders.

Our Birmingham office raised almost £3,000 at its annual quiz night for the office charity ‘Geoff Horsfield Foundation’. Teams from No5 Chambers, Dains, Biddle & Webb, Rider Levett Bucknall and Kings Chambers joined us for a great night for a great cause.

Partner Kate Gardner challenged herself to swim the Scilly Isles Archipelago to raise money for SAVES and Pancreatic Cancer UK. Before setting off, she said: “Although I am a keen open water swimmer, with the maximum temperature likely to be around 15 degrees and the possibility of rough seas and strong tides, this will be a real challenge but hopefully great fun as well”. The challenge involved swimming in open sea between these beautiful islands, situated 28 miles off the Cornish coast and walking across the islands in between swims.

Taking the plunge

Paralegal Dan Akers used his CSR day to cycle up Mount Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. He took on a 12 mile route, featuring a 3,717ft of ascent and one of the most exhilarating and rockiest descents on offer. With only one minor crash and a pinch-flat puncture, Dan completed the challenge in six hours. Amazing effort!

Head of IT Andy Taylor put his CSR day towards a four day rally Challenge. Completing a set of tasks each day, Andy and friends travelled in a much loved 20 year old Lexus, through France, Belgium, Germany, across the Alps, down through Austria and Italy before finally arriving in Venice. Not only did the team win the rally, but also raised over £2000 for Cancer Research UK.

One of our legal secretaries, Jane Duffus, used her CSR day to share stories from her book, The Women Who Built Bristol 1184-2018, with around 150 GCSE and A-Level students. Jane is a great storyteller and the students were very engaged and asked lots of questions about the characters in the book.

Hannah Langford, a partner in our London office, took on the Royal Parks half marathon raising over £900 in aid of Duchenne UK. Running through the horrid wind and rain, Hannah ran a personal best of 1:59:37.

VolunteeringHelping young people develop employment skillsA number of our Bristol staff took part in the Community Apprentice Programme, which is run by Envision. Assisted by volunteer mentors from local businesses, the programme is designed to help young people develop the skills that employers are looking for. One student from the 2017/2018 programme said: “The business mentors from Clarke Willmott have really helped me to develop my skills. They gave me specific advice that was tailored to me specifically. It was invaluable to have the opportunity to ask them specific questions and get really detailed answers back. Thank you so much!”

Preparing donations for saleA number of volunteers from our Taunton and Bristol offices spent a morning sorting through donations at St. Margaret’s warehouse so the items could be sold to raise money. The team had lots of fun and were blown away by the sheer volume of work involved in processing donations. The teams help equated to one of the following:

20 x days of care for a patient in the Taunton In-patient Unit (£500 per day)

100 x Community Nurse Specialist visits to patients being cared for at home in your local communities (£100 per visit)

250 x counselling sessions for a child who has lost a parent (£40 per session)

400 x middle of the night support to patients in need by one of our 24 hour advice line nurses (£25 per call)

2,000 x freshly prepared meals for one of our In-Patients to ensure their particular diet requirements are met (£5 each)

Supporting students with their future career choicesACE ACADEMYStaff from our Birmingham office supported a group of Year 12 students from Ace Academy whose studies included an element on law. The students visited our office where they heard from our solicitors about their life in the legal profession. This was followed by questions and discussion about careers in law, court room experiences and advice on their exams.

Filling up the bucketsVolunteers from our Southampton office have helped to collect bucket donations either outside Tesco stores, or by attending Fratton Park Stadium (home of Portsmouth FC) during a match day. All proceeds going to their office charity - SERV Wessex.

Helping to expand vocabulary whilst having fun readingThe Bristol office partnered up with the Charity Ablaze and the Bridge Learning Campus secondary school to provide ‘Bookworms’ - a fantastic reading initiative that not only aims to improve reading, writing and general academic skills, but also helps raise aspirations and confidence in 11-13 year olds. We encourage students to read and learn; playing word games within the theme of the chosen book, and where possible introducing a bit of drama to make it lots of fun. We also help students to explore the story and its characters. We’ve had great feedback from the school and the students.
