On top ofthat, maket conditions such as economic policy, mateial costs and labo availability fluctuate apidly.Custome demands ae fickle and envionmental egulations ae stict. In addition to these extenalchallenges, GM Daewoo paticipates in Geneal Motos global netwok, diving the woldwide expot o

    its vehicles and technology.

    GM Daewoo management identified poduct lifecycle management (PLM) technology as a way ofmeeting these challenges. PLM technology would povide the infastuctue fo tansfoming andsteamlining the global poduct development pocess, thus enabling the company to eact faste tomaket fluctuations. It would boost poductivity in a vaiety of ways: by speeding access to infomationby eplacing pat of physical pototyping and basic digital mockup with advanced digital validation andby inceasing the e-use of existing poduct infomation. In addition, the collaboative solution withinthe PLM system would allow GM Daewoo to wok moe effectively within its own dispesed facilitiesand also with its paent company, GM.

    The PLM implementation

    At the end of 2003, GM Daewoo implemented a PLM solution fom Siemens PLM Softwae based onNX digital poduct development softwae and Teamcente digital lifecycle management softwae.

    NX data, Teamcente enabled GM Daewoo to stuctueand manage its poduct infomation within a Vehicle Assembly Stuctue (VAS). This educed seachtime fo existing data and facilitated its e-use. Teamcente also povided poduct configuationmanagement capabilities, which have educed the time needed to ceate a vitual vehicle by an aveagof 90 pecent. In addition, Teamcente has facilitated data shaing among diffeent GM Daewoofacilities. The time needed to tansmit infomation fom one site to anothe has dopped fom up to fivdays to less than one. Though its wokflow pocess and change management capabilities, Teamcente

    has optimized the design pocess at GM Daewoo as well.

    Visualization capabilities povided by Teamcente pemit digital validation of vehicle-level configu-ations. By doing moe validation digitally, GM Daewoo is able to esolve incidents soone. Digitalvalidation has also played a ole in educing the time to build the fist physical pototype vehicle, whichis cuently down by 18 pecent and expected to be educed even futhe to about 46 pecent next yeaTeamcentes community collaboation capabilities have made eal-time collaboation possible, allowinfo validation with global GM and supplies in a secue envionment. These capabilities also contibuteto the deceased tavel costs mentioned above.

Anothebenefit was that concuent vehicle pogam development at GM Daewoo inceased 50 pecent aftePLM was implemented. All of the fist-yea tagets fo the PLM solution wee achieved, and someunexpected benefits wee noticed as well. Less pape is now needed fo shaing infomation betweendiffeent teams, fo example. Also, the ability to use lightweight vesions of design data fo designeviews educed the need fo some high-pefomance CAD stations.
